It's Memorial Day weekend here in Cincinnati, and for most of us, that means time off from work, the first 'real' weekend of summer and of course, Taste Of Cincinnati . I've been to the Taste for years and always enjoy myself with the different food selections. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MidPoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati, and as we noted on Twitter this morning, the initial artist lineup for this years festivities will be announced today. In the years since City Beat took the festival reigns, they have brought in bands like Surfer Blood, Holy F*ck, Best Coast, A Place To Bury Strangers, Ted Leo, Jason Isbell, Caribou, Chairlift, Van Dyke Parks and more local and regional bands of note to mention. More and more, artists are deciding that they want their music to be heard, and they want to be the ones in control of how that goes down. The 'just give it away free' topic has been discussed over and over again, so I won't take us down that path today, but it's interesting to see another Cincinnati band choose to put out their new album, and do it for free. That is what You, You're Awesome decided to do, dropping their new album, Good Point, Whoever Said That , their first long player, today. [...]

Even though the weather hasn't really shown it, it's almost summer here in Cincinnati. And of course, with summer comes the announcement of the concert series over at Riverbend . Now, I typically don't bat an eye when I look at the lineup of has been retreads that the venue brings in like OAR, Goo Goo Dolls and of course the drunken mess that is Jimmy Buffett shows. We were pretty impressed with the debut solo album from former Greenhorn and current musical wizard Brian Olive back in 2009. The garage rock and soul that emanated from the album made it one of the more under-appreciated releases of the year. Well, Brian is back and has enlisted the help of Black Keys frontman and sometimes solo artist Dan Auerbach to help with his sophomore release. As MusicNOW 2011 rides off into the sunset, I once again have to provide my overall thoughts on the festival. If you follow this blog or know me personally, you know I am attached to this little festival, which took some big steps forward this year. But just like anything else, I have some criticisms, not really of the festival itself, but rather how it is embraced, so I'll get into that a bit as well. Here we go..... On Sunday night, The National closed out MusicNOW if fine fashion, playing a set with old favorites, current classics and a couple songs that we don't hear from them live very often. One of those was a gem with Sharon Van Etten guesting called "Think You Can Wait" which is a tune they penned for the Paul Giamati film Win, Win. Another great video unearthed from the MusicNOW vaults for you today, and this one from Justin Vernon. We have talked alot about his amazing performance from last year, and even shared some video footage from the event, but this video puts the others to shame. It was shot by the Projectmill crew and one of Cincinnati's finest Pete Ohs. Many people still know Owen Pallett by his original stage name, Final Fantasy. In 2009, however, he retired it in favor of using his own name for his music. What didn't change, however, was the steady progression of his densely composed electro/acoustic chamber-pop. His last full-length, 2010's Heartland , was a universally acclaimed follow up to his break-through effort, 2006's He Poos Clouds . One of the more underrated performances of last years MusicNOW festival was Colin Stetson. He took the stage and had a compelling performance, and I know I walked away a big fan. One of the great things about the MusicNOW festival is how it not only attracts great musicians every single year, but also how those great musicians have such a great experience in Cincinnati during their time here, most want to return. We saw it with Sufjan Stevens, who after performing as the headliner in 2007, returned the following year in a lesser role to showcase a film he had made. Return appearances from The Books, Richard Reed Parry and YMusic are also of note and speak to the gravitational pull of Memorial Hall in spring. One [...]

As we jump into MusicNOW 2011, I thought it would be fun to not only preview the festival this week, but also look back at some of the festivals from years past.
