Last week I was very exciting to have the opportunity to see Japanese popstar Kyary Pamyu Pamyu perform live in London. I wrote an article about it for MTV Japan's English-language website, MTV 81, which you can read here . And if you've not yet acquainted yourself with her 2011 single 'PonPonPon', get on and do that now:

It's the end of the year. A time of reflection. A time of lists. Who hasn't made a list of something or other, eh? Not me, that's who. In that I have made a list. A playlist of my favourite tracks of 2012 (or at least some of them). It's quite long, but there are a few stand out tracks, of course. The track that I've listened to most this year is White Foxes by Susanne Sundfør, a mini epic that was the first single from her latest album, [...]
I was on the Digital Music Trends podcast again last week, this time with music industry analyst Mark Mulligan and Ben Sisario from The New York Times. In the show we discussed Soundcloud's new look, music discovery, Turntable.fm's revamp and the launch of its new Piki radio app, and iTunes 11. You can find more information on the show here and watch it here:
While there has been some excellent music out this year, it's been a while since a piece of music stopped me in my tracks quite as firmly as Nautilus by Anna Meredith. An intense blast of brass and beats, it's taken from her debut EP, Black Prince Fury , which was released by Moshi Moshi back in October. It only just made its way to my ears, however, thanks to the ever brilliant All back No Front podcast . If you're one of those Spotify-using types then you can [...]
Last night Radio 1 aired a documentary entitled Disasterpieces . A counterpart to Zane Lowe's Masterpieces series, which looks back at classic albums, Disasterpieces looked at some follow-ups to great albums which were less so. It's a fun way to spend an hour, which is partly why I mention it, but also because I feature on it talking about albums such as Oasis' Be Here Now and MGMT's Congratulations , as well as the role of critics in the internet age. You can listen to it online until Monday evening here .
So, if you like the idea of hearing my voice talking about music business stuff, this is the post for you, because it contains two hours of that. Well, not two continuous hours of me talking, but two hour long podcasts on which I appear. First is the latest edition of the CMU Podcast , which after a bit of a break is back in a new monthly format (actually, the format hasn't really changed, but it is now monthly). My colleague Chris Cooke and I discussed EMI, music festivals, The Pirate Bay and Amanda Palmer. Listen [...]
Amazing thing of the day: Panoramic photo of the surface of Mars from the Curiosity rover.
So, my grand plan to update this blog with occasionally round-ups of tracks I've been enjoying has faltered slightly. Not that I haven't been enjoying any new music lately ( far from it ), but, you know, I've been busy. I think I'm going to try to make it a monthly thing, rather than just random, so I have something to work towards. Anyway, I was on holiday last week, so to fill the space in my Editor's Letter column , where I would normally moan on about something that had happened during the week, I pre-prepared [...]
There was a point at the start of January when I was genuinely worried that I might not like hearing new music any more. For a few days early on in the month nothing I heard excited me. Then suddenly I was deluged by stuff, a chunk of which I posted here just over a week ago. And as I said in that post, it's my plan to post up stuff I've heard and enjoyed every now and then just because there's not the space to cover it all in CMU. I didn't expect to have enough to warrant [...]

Ignore this, I'll delete it in a moment.
When I wrote about Amon Tobin for CMU's Artists Of The Year rundown last year, it was in his guise as a producer. But Tobin is also a great DJ, as the recording of a set in Seattle in 2009 proves. Thanks to almakow on SoundCloud for posting it and @TomDavenport on Twitter for posting it. Tracklist: 01. Excision – Boom (Feat. Datsik) (0:03-1:01) 02. Two Fingers – ? (0:32) 03. Eskmo – I Dream I‘m Flying (1:55) 04. Amon Tobin – Theme From Battery [...]
Right, I've been neglecting this poor blog. It's about time I started putting more stuff on it. And I have a plan to make that happen. I listen to a lot of new music, but I don't always get to write about the stuff I come across that I like in CMU because there's just too much of it - these days I don't write as much of the Approved column in CMU as I used to. Things pile up, the moment passes. And, if I'm honest, sometimes I just forget. So, my plan is to start pulling together [...]
I've been watching this video a lot this week. It's a simple one camera deal, but has the added advantage of being attached to the International Space Station and pointed down at the Earth. Sped up to show various views of our planet as the ISS orbits us, we get to see the Northern Lights, lightning storms, and populations density all from above. As I say, it bears repeat viewings. Meanwhile, brilliant “ecstatic trance” duo Blondes have just released a video for their new track Wine . Using little more than [...]
Waiting's a funny thing, isn't it? I spent most of today waiting for the sale of EMI's recordings division to be announced, trying to second guess what time an announcement would arrive. Midday, as Wall Street wakes up and the first US newswires go out (ie 7am there)? Nope, we were pretty sure it was Universal Music Group getting the EMI labels, and that it would be them making the announcement, and its parent company Vivendi isn't listed in New York so Wall Street's not relevant. But would it come from UMG's New York office? In which case [...]

I wrote about Dems' new EP Houses for CMU recently. Now the lead track has a video. That's it up there.
I wrote about this song for CMU a few weeks ago and now it has a video. Surely this can't just be coincidence.

I recently wrote a piece for Wired on a show called Hacked , an artistic response to the phone hacking scandal, which featured a series of short plays all based on one or more voicemail messages contributed by anonymous (except for the one person named in my article and this interview) volunteers. In the article I included two quotes from the co-curator of the project, and director of the opening play, Derek Bond, that were part of a much longer and very interesting interview. So, for fear of it festering on my hard drive forever [...]

When Apple launches a new product, you can be pretty sure that it will dominate the headlines for days. There are few news stories that can overshadow such an event because Apple has become so good at turning its product launches into just that: events. Sadly, the one thing guaranteed to do it happened this week. Just 24 hours after Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the new iPhone 4S , his predecessor Steve Jobs, the man who developed the theatre and spectacle of the company's announcements, succumbed to the cancer he had been suffering with [...]
It was the Conservative Party Conference this week, the third of the three main UK political parties' annual get togethers. As you'll probably have seen, Prime Minister David Cameron sparked controversy when he suggested that everyone should help out the economy by just paying off their debts. Aside from the fact that he apparently thinks we're all just in debt for the fun of it, we've previously been told to help the economy by spending more money, so I don't know what to believe any more. I guess I'll just pay off all my debts using a credit [...]
