There is a huge difference between childish and childlike - in one case you throw temper tantrums and in the other you see the joy in everything. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros video for the new single off the ablum Here has a sweet childlike innocence temporing the usually gloomy transition between living and dying. In this video, directed by Michal Byra, a Polish fan who won a contest to direct any song he wanted off the album, we see an old man in the hospital, intravenous drip in [...]

This is a sponsored post. If you have ever spent time listening to prog-rock, you already know Rush. The Canadian band has long been the favorite of those who enjoy lengthy, complicated tracks and innovative lyrics, but the band has been overlooked time and time again for nomination in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 2013 ballot, though, finally features this great band. A look at their accomplishments should show any non-believer not only how amazing it is that the band has not yet entered the Hall, but how deserving [...]

Solange Knowles is very likely only famous because of her older sister, but with tracks like this her music career is nothing to laugh at. Solange very may well end up being the talented sister here. This past week the highly anticipated theme song for the new Bond film, Skyfall, was released. As with all twenty-two previous songs they used a popular artist to be the voice of the film, namely Adele. How does she compare with the iconic Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger or Diamonds are Forever or Tom Jones' Thunderball or Carly Simon's The Spy Who Loved Me ? Well it is a return to the dramatic, over-the-top, heavily orchestrated themes of the past and Adeles vocal reminded me a lot of Shirley Bassey. These [...]

Does anyone remember how awesome music was in the early thousands? I'm not necessarily saying it was a time for classics but a lot of the biggest radio jams of the period rate pretty high on the nostalgia meter. TLC pumped out "Waterfalls," Destiny's Child was still together begging for us to say their name, and if you're willing to admit it, you used to sing along with J.Lo. One of my favorite mostly forgotten but irresistibly fun songs was Mario's "Let Me Love You." While Mario isn't much of mainstay these days, his personal classic is one [...]

The 19602s was a conflicted decade in music. There were so many new genres being pioneered and new bands were popping up like fleas on a cat. The 19602s saw the rock and roll of such artists as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Barry, Gene Vincent and Little Richard, the rhythm and blues of Ruth Brown, Johnny Otis, Ray Charles and Lloyd Price, the country/rockabilly sounds of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves give way to pop rock, psychedelia, beat music, heavy metal, prog rock, baroque pop, bubblegum pop, folk and folk [...]
If you like catchy melodies, well-written truthful lyrics and balls-to-the-wall rock then the Mip Power Trios new album, Haggard and Bedraggled is for you. It is a trip through punk, rock, folk/rock, country/rock and a few other things. The strength of these nine songs is, as always, Mips considerable way with words. The lyrics, just as on her album, Caught In Between , are witty, cutting, astute and quirky enough to keep you interested and the melodies are so dynamic and insanely catchy that your toes will ache from tapping them. And then [...]

I'm getting rather tired of people saying summer is over, after all we still have fourteen days left so I've been playing Summertime by Daylight for Deadeyes quite a lot. It is really a lot of fun and should be a beer commercial. The Gormley's, Chris (drums/lead vocals) and Matt (guitar/backing vocals), and their friend, Andy Neill (bass/backing vocals), know how to craft a catchy tune - I have been humming this ever since it landed in my inbox last month. I know I'll be playing this on the many cold, winter days we have [...]

Last Friday I had the chance to attend WHOLEHEARTED which hosted a great collection of home bread talent. Artists had set times of around 15-20 minutes each to show their chops to a small crowd, most of whom sat on the floor of the West end corner cafe. I'd read a piece on Good Times Bad Times prior to attending and even after seeing pictures, I was still very unsure of what the 'cafe' was - although, being there made it all make sense. The cafe was all about a certain feel, and the collaboration of talent only [...]

I only recently got really into philosophy-graduate-student-tu rned-experimental-R&B artist Tom Krell's project How to Dress Well, whose debut album Love Remains (2010) received positive reviews across the board. I've been listening to songs like "Lover's Start" and "Ready For The World" on repeat on long bike rides down by the lake, and the sadness in the songs seems appropriate for the end of summer. His sophomore album Total Loss is scheduled to be released on the 18th of this month, and he has already posted a few tracks from it. One of them is [...]

It seems as if Vancouver's Claire Boucher, better known by her stage name Grimes , has been everywhere since the release of her third album Visions , a fresh and quirky record that's also innate and accessible. She has finally released visuals for her lead single Genesis which sees Boucher and her extravagant gang writhing through a desert, toting albino snakes and other overall weirdness (in a good way.) Peep the self directed video below. Related posts: Grimes- Genesis The latest from Montreal [...]

Jared Followill ( Kings Of Leon ) and Nick Brown ( Mona ) have a side project called, Smoke & Jackal. They will be releasing a six-track EP called, appropriately enough, EP1 (RCA) on October 16. The EP was recorded in one week which can be a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to quality but if the debut single, No Tell , is any indication everything should come out just fine. There is a definite Kings of Leon vibe to this song, especially the bass line (Followill is [...]
