So it looks like Pittsburgh has a string of shows that might be worth seeing coming up. And from the looks of it Mr. Smalls is going to be as far as you have to travel to see these shows. That's right! Its best of 2007 list! But not today. And probably not the whole thing until next month. This is going to prove near impossible. There were about fifty albums that came out this year that had a shot of making this list. Getting it down to thirty was easy. Black Kids? This summer I saw Band of Horses in Pittsburgh and I have to say they put on an incredibly good show. They played a lot of stuff off of what was then their upcoming album Cease to Begin. I probably haven't given this album the attention it deserves because those songs were great live. Which is why under normal circumstances I would be thrilled to hear that they're playing in Toronto this Friday. (I don't know what it is either) I'm just getting around to listening to Yeasayer's album All Hour Cymbals and its damn good. How is it possible that this is their full length debut? No debut has the right to be this polished. The opening song, "Sunrise," is very percussion driven. Enough percussion that it almost seems tribal. But that's the thing about this album, it draws on so many different musical backgrounds and melds them together seamlessly. And the vocals, the vocals, the vocals.
