It was past my bedtime when I did this, so, you know, just bear that in mind if I slurred a couple words. The music is GREAT though. If you didn't hear it yet, and you can't get enough seasonal tunes, be sure to hear part 1 of this year's Christmas special , or if you're hard-core, every Christmas special I've ever done . So, this is my 100th episode of this show. I would make a big deal out of this, but I've actually done far more than 100 of these things. From 2002 to 2007, this used to be called the Post Modern Rock Show. I conceived of the name as part of an idea to create a meta-genre, encompassing all the music I like to play. Having named this meta-genre, it would then become a radio format, and that radio format would dominate and defeat all the Nickelback and Britney Spears-spewing stations, and people everywhere would emerge from their [...]

I started doing this almost exactly nine years ago. That is, if you don't count mix tapes-then it's, like, 25 years. Weird, huh? People have sometimes, over the years, wondered if part of why the Pacific NW is such a musically innovative region is that there are so many months when rain forces people indoors, that there's nothing left to do but make music. While there may be truth to that, there is most certainly a tipping point, in which the rain not only forces you indoors, but also drains your will to live, or at least your will to create. It's been an especially rainy fall and winter here, and while that's not necessarily the only factor that's kept me [...]
Today is the premiere of Portland band Menomena's new video, for the song TAOS off their latest album, Mines .I've posted the video, along with an article about why & how director Alicia J. Rose made it. You can read it & watch it at my old stomping grounds, opbmusic.org . Go forth and be seduced!

The interactive category is still a fairly new one, and there were only five I could have possibly put here. Three of them were really boring, but these both are worth spending some time with, particularly the first one. Arcade Fire - We Used to Wait (taken from The Suburbs ) Plug in the address of the house you grew up in (or lived in at a significant time in your life) and via the magic of Google Maps, the video is set there. I actually found the [...]

These are brain candy. But it's gourmet brain candy. Broken Social Scene - All to All (taken from Forgiveness Rock Record ) When we were kids, my two sisters and I would stand at the top of the stairs, pretend to have a slow-motion fight where one of us would punch the other, who would then fall down the stairs, also in slow motion. The faller would get back up, charge up the stairs (again, still in slow-motion) and punch the other person down. We could [...]

We love our stuff. If you think that's not true, try watching Hoarders or MTV Cribs sometime. Wax Taylor (feat. Charlie Winston ) - I Own You (taken from In the Mood for Life ) Actually, we kind of love our stuff a little too much. Umm... anyone wanna go Ghandi with me? [...]

These three, because of their depth, simplicity and beauty, stood alone from some of the sillier categories I created. Harper Simon - Berkley Girl (taken from Harper Simon ) I have to say this every time I mention Harper Simon, but I didn't discover his 2009 debut album until a year after it had been released. It wasn't for lack of paying attention, it simply had barely been reported on in the indie music press. Which is criminal, because not only is Harper the son of Paul Simon, [...]

As we close in on the final, more specific categories of the year's best videos, the number of videos that fit into those categories is getting smaller and smaller. Despite the fact that the dream that you're back in high school and are completely unprepared for your finals because you've forgotten to attend class all semester is pretty much universal, the number of good music videos that take place there are still relatively slim. There's something that happens in the brain during adolescence that makes colors look brighter, food tastes better, time seems infinite and music feels like [...]

Something that occupies a good percentage of our brain activity is the question of whose authority, control or dominance we are under, how we feel about the position we find ourselves in, and what is the best response to our circumstances. Because of this, these relationships are a rich source of comedy. Superchunk - Digging for Something (taken from Majesty Shredding ) Mac McCaughan takes matters into his own hands, and decides to cash in on Superchunk nostalgia with a band comprised of hipster cliches. But will the [...]

One of the things that makes us human is our imagination, which often produces creatures which are definitely not human. Goldfrapp - Alive (taken from Head First ) Tale as old as time: Beauty and the beast. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSdZAk A4VpA Yeasayer - [...]

One development in reality TV I'm really thankful for is So You Think You Can Dance? Because really, anyone can sing, but learning how to dance takes years of dedication, so when someone makes it onto that show, they really deserve to be there and show off their craft. Still, not everything is about technical perfection. Style counts, wit does too. These videos all get major points in those categories. !!! - Jamie, My Intentions are Bass (taken from Strange Weather, Isn't It? ) You may be disappointed [...]

On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, but take a trip to the mall on the 26th (known as Boxing Day in most Commonwealth countries) and any inner peace you may have felt with family and friends one short day ago will melt away like a snowman in a sauna. Conflict, hostility, war are all still part of our world, and may always be. These videos portray this reality effectively in a dramatic and often poignant way. Blitz the Ambassador - Something to Believe (taken from [...]
