The First Day of Winter

The First Day of Winter Here's a diverse selection of winter themed tunes to celebrate the first day of winter in it's last few moments. I remember being addicted to The Bangles as a child, one summer their tape did not leave my boom box, I still consider this song one of my absolute favorites. The Bangles "Hazy Shade of Winter" (Simon & Garfunkel) I know I was aware of the Cocteau Twins but I wasn't officially introduced to them until I was in high school from a French exchange student that was staying with [...]

Happy Chanukah

Happy Chanukah Happy Chanukah to my Jewish brothers and sisters out there, I realize it is already the 6th night, but better late than never. Unfortunately finding cover songs to celebrate Chanukah is not nearly as easy as finding Christmas tunes so we shall celebrate with the same handful of tunes that appear on every other blog that is giving Jews a shout out this year. I'm not a huge Barenaked Ladies fan but at least they gave me a song! Barenaked Ladies "I Have A Little Dreidel" [...]

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones Sells Out First Ave Minneapolis Part 1
Photo courtesy of LAist Last night I saw Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings at the El Rey in Los Angeles for the first time since they've blown up and I had a hell of a time! The woman has an amazing voice and more energy than someone half her age. The crowd was an interesting mix but everyone was into the music and it was nice to not hear the chitter-chatter of the crowd between songs, probably because the band didn't stop for a moment! Sharon Jones [...]

The Boss Pt. 1

The Boss Pt. 1 Although I wasn't born in New Jersey I spent my formative years there. I grew up in central NJ and my dad used to always tell me people would spot Bruce at this ice cream place in the Freehold area, I myself preferred hanging out in Princeton so I never had the pleasure of spotting the legend eating ice cream amongst the masses. To honor my roots I will share some Springsteen covers because apparently it's hip to cover The Boss these days. All tracks are live except Electrelane which is featured on the On [...]

ladies first

ladies first I've always been partial to a female vocalist for as long as I can remember. Here's a taste of some of my favorites who will surely pop up from time to time. Natalie Merchant "Baby I Love You/Son of a Preacher Man" (Aretha Franklin/Dusty Springfield cover) Cat Power "Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley cover) The Softies "Together Forever" (Rick Astley cover) Sleater-Kinney "American Ruse" (MC5 cover) Luscious Jackson "To Sir With Love" (Lulu cover) [...]

new kid on the block

new kid on the block i know there are thousands of blogs out there with the occasional cover song, and dozens with special cover song posts but there are only a handful of blogs that specialize in the art that is the cover song so i'm jumping on the bandwagon. perhaps i'll expose you to something you've never heard before or spark some memory in your mind relating to the original or even the cover version. i'm always open to new tracks so if you are aware of anything you think i should check out please let me know. please check [...]
