Last night's secret Long Winters' show at the Sunset

long winters at the sunset, 07.09.09
The Long Winters' played a secret show at the Sunset last night, and it was actually like, a secret! Generally speaking, "secret" shows in Seattle go a bit like this -- that is, they're an extremely loudly whispered secret, at best. Barsuk Records are better secret keepers than most. (Remember that secret Death Cab show at the Croc back in 2003? Of course you don't -- because only like 50 people knew about it and actually showed up. But boy oh boy, was that ever a treat for those of us who did make it.) Last night [...]

Relive 1987 with Less Than Zero at Central Cinema tonight

Hazy shade of winter - Bangles
Sure, maybe it's not a great adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel. Hell, it's not even that great of a movie – but it is a perfect time capsule of the 80s, from Jamie Gertz's high bangs to Andrew McCarthy's giant shoulder pads, its heavy-handed "drugs are bad" message and The Bangle's cover of Hazy Shade of Winter... read more

Photo(s) of the day: Michael Jackson farewell

Even though photographer extraordinaire William Anthony relocated from Seattle to So-Cal, he is still among our favorites. While he was in Seattle, he captured some of our finer moments as well as those of loves like Her Space Holiday. It's no surprise then that his touching portfolio of shots taken outside Michael Jackson's memorial service would make us bridge the distance between here and there. Go check 'em out on his website. read more

The Pharmacy returns to Seattle this weekend

The Pharmacy, a great punk dance punk band who recently moved to New Orleans at the beginning of the year, are returning to Seattle for two shows this weekend. They are playing at Vera on Friday night with a lineup that we might call "unfuckwithable": Schoolyard Heroes, Black Houses, The Whore Moans and Keg. Saturday they are at The Comet with Sugar Sugar Sugar, Strong Killings and The Bugs. read more

Mt. St. Helens play Mt. St. Helens

Seattle's Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band's songs are as amalgamous as the band itself. With heavy post-punk bass lines, Modest Mouse guitar lines, and Strokes-like drumming, MSHVB transcends all these things in the ways that they put them together. Using heavy drumming, keyboards and distorted guitar, and alternating loud and gentle tracks they skim the surface of nostalgia for a post-industrial era that can never be returned to. All of this is most evident during their live show. They opened for Cursive at Neumos a few weeks ago and blew the audience away. The excessive amount of drums [...]

Deserved hyperbolic praise for The Dirty Projectors

Before they spin off out of our orbit, leaving our only access to their sound as microwaves picked up from millions of years away by NASA, you should see The Dirty Projectors play live. And you should probably go soon; one the lovely ladies may have to return to her home planet where singing in glorious harmony is the only form of communication. read more

Three Imaginary DVDs to see: a stupid action flick, a cloning documentary, and a thriller on a train

Night Train Trailer

The Wooden Birds in Brooklyn

I came to the party late on American Analog Set. A couple years ago I was invited to an event deep in Brooklyn for a publicity company celebrating their tenth year in business. Broken Social Scene played for a small crowd of jaded music writers. Andrew Kenny was there; his fiancée (wife?) was one of the publicists at the agency. I didn't really know him outside of being "the guy who covered "Line of Best Fit" on a split EP with Ben Gibbard. read more

PJ Harvey and John Parish at the Moore

While few major artists would dare even attempt to play a concert that included none of the songs that made them famous, PJ Harvey overwhelmed a Seattle crowd by doing just that on June 16th at the Moore. With John Parish handling lead guitar, Harvey unapologetically blasted through a set limited to material from their two collaborative albums, the recently released A Man A Woman Walked By and the 1996 Dance Hall At Louse Point. read more
