I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the Y! Radish post is now showing over 8000 comments . I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them! If you did not see the original post you can view it here . Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were: 1. The list was based on the American market [...]

I completely understand the frustration of "best of lists", and I can assure you that I read hundreds of comments on the Yahoo Music blog whenever we post one. Many times album "best of" lists generate thousands of comments. Sure, many of the remarks are ridiculous, but many are valid in a subjective sort of way. For this playlist I wanted to find the true top 20 albums once and for all, but to do this I needed to clear my mind of all opinion and approach it as a science. My own personal taste did not influence [...]

(Play Playlist) A vast majority of human beings alive on planet earth today and 99.99% of popular music critics would tell you that the Beatles are the most influential band in popular music history. The number of times Beatles songs have been recorded by other artists is astounding and many musicians site the band as a major influence. The Beatles song "Yesterday" is cited by many to be the most covered song in popular music history and although there is no way to prove such a statement I would not bet money against the assumption. The [...]

The moustache (or mustache) is the most difficult facial hair configuration to pull off. And for the musician it shows a daring and individuality not common to an industry obsessed with "image." For this list I wanted to select the top 10 moustaches in rock & roll history. When thinking about who should make the list I set some parameters as follows: 1. The moustache had to be the central feature of the artist's facial hair - jazz dots, lambchops or unconnected goatees were acceptable as long as the stache stood out as a separate entity. Full beard and moustache [...]

(Play Playlist - Rhapsody) (Play Playlist - Yahoo Music Unlimited) I have fond childhood memories of the circus. I remember being truly amazed by the clowns, lions, elephants, acrobats and other circus spectacles that were larger than life at the time. It was under the big top where I experienced live entertainment for the very first time. In addition to the animals, comedy, costumes, food and smells, music also played a big part in the experience. This playlist does not feature the actual music you would hear at the circus - for that [...]

(Play Playlist - Rhapsody) (Play Playlist - Yahoo Music Unlimited) The 1980s was a big decade for music. It kicked off with people being fed up with disco and ended after giving birth to hip hop, new wave, pop metal, alternative rock, synth pop, thrash metal, house music and MTV. MTV became an incredible vehicle for artists to get their music out to the masses in the 80s and ended up making and/or breaking the careers of many. When people think about the music of this decade they undoubtedly think of bands [...]

(Play Playlist - Yahoo Music Unlimited) (Play Playlist - Rhapsody) Musicians, artists and writers have a world-wide reputation for eccentricity. As Oscar Levant so famously said, "there's a fine line between genius and insanity." In order to create great art the artist must be outside of the norms. So before I get into my top picks for "weirdest musicians" I want to make it quite clear that being "weird" is not in itself a bad thing. Weirdness is just behavior that the majority of the population finds foreign, [...]

Lilith Fair was a female-centric music festival that was produced for three years running in the late 1990's (1997, 1998 and 1999). The festival was founded by musician Sarah McLachlan after she was insulted by a music industry that refused to give female artists the credit and respect they deserved. Also referred to in some circles as Girlapalooza, Lesbopalooza and Breast-fest, Lilith Fair was named after Lilith, a mythological female demon, sometimes referred to as Adam's first wife. The festival was a big deal at the time, and although the artists featured spanned [...]

Van Morrison - Keep It Simple 62-year old Irish legend Van Morrison still has an overabundance of soul, his 33rd full-length studio album, titled Keep It Simple , has everything you want in a Van Morrison album. Van's soulful vocals steal the show, as they should, but are supported by tasteful and masterful instrumentation that's low on flash, but high on feeling. If you focus on details you'll be wowed by the gospel-tinged backing vocals, a perfect B3 underline, a melodic guitar riff, a warm steel pedal, a heartfelt lyric, or any number of other elements that never [...]

Or, The Whale - Light Poles And Pines I was instantly intrigued by the band Or, The Whale because of my love for Melville's classic Moby Dick or, The Whale. I spent a good deal of time in New Bedford, Ma., the location of the fictitious Spouter Inn and Moby Dick is flat out my favorite book of all time. The 7-member band Or, The Whale hail from San Francisco and have produced an imminently enjoyable record rooted in Americana. The musicianship, harmonies and melodies will instantly put a [...]

Millions of people have been inspired by the role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, which was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson circa 1974. Gygax, who is often referred to as "the father of the role-playing game" died today at his home in Lake Geneva, WI after suffering several years of health problems. I'm one of many who've been impacted by the game. I started playing it in high school and continued through college. To this day some D&D games I played over a decade ago carry vivid memories. Playing the game can instantly brand [...]

(Listen to Nirvana) Kurt Cobain would have turned 41 on February 20th if he had not shot himself. On this birth anniversary of one of rock's most influential individuals Shout! Factory released a DVD titled Kurt Cobain About A Son that presents Cobain from a first person perspective. The film is anchored by Kurt Cobain's own voice pulled from over 25 hours of previously unheard interviews as recorded by music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana . These conversations are spliced together and [...]

This playlist contains all 17 songs that made it to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1980. The Hot 100 ranks singles based on both sales and airplay, so it's a good measure of the music that was the most popular for a moment in time. If you were alive in 1980 you are certainly very familiar with of all the tracks in this playlist. As you reminisce about 1980 with the help of the music maybe you'll remember some of the following key news events of said year: [...]

Here is a fine collection of alt/indie songs about monkeys. Monkey info from Wikipedia - A monkey is any member of either the New World monkeys or Old World monkeys, two of the three groupings of simian primates, the third group being the apes. There are 264 known extant species of monkey. The New World monkeys are classified within the parvorder Platyrrhini, whereas the Old World monkeys (superfamily Cercopithecoidea) form part of the parvorder Catarrhini, which also includes the apes. Thus, scientifically speaking, monkeys are paraphyletic (not a single coherent group), and Old World monkeys [...]

Putumayo World Music has been releasing quality world music compilations since 1993. The CDs are easily recognizable by the bright and whimsical albums covers created by artist Nicola Heindl. Putumayo compilations are targeted to so-called "cultural creatives" who have an interest in travel, culture and the arts. The discs are distributed through traditional outlets, but also through a network of coffee, clothing and gift shops where you may have seen their small, brightly-colored merchandise displays. Putumayo does a great job of getting music across borders to audiences who would have never heard it otherwise, and their latest is called [...]

![The Bird And The Bee - One Too Many Hearts [EP]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/905973_lg.jpg)
The Bird And The Bee have released a 4-song EP for Valentine's Day titled One Too Many Hearts . It features three new originals—"Birthday," "Last Day of Our Love" & "Come As You Were"—with music by Greg Kurstin & Inara George's trademark lyrics, sung sweetly but laced with her wry observations on love found and lost. Inara also sings a duet with Gus Seyffert on "Tonight You Belong to Me," a 1920s song performed by Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin in the 1979 film The Jerk . The EP is not yet available on [...]
