I think I want to preface this by saying a few words about the band and their music. It's very polarizing. It's polarizing to me sometimes. Phish is not an easy sell to a lot of people, and I just wanted to say I'll try to post 3 new updates to compensate (!) However, with that being said, there is a LOT of music out there that doesn't have a millionth of the guts and depth that Phish bring to the stage. OK. That's enough. SO.... My favorite Phish show of the summer [...]
Here are a few things, on this lovely Friday afternoon, that I am overly excited for: Trailer for Where The Wild Things Are , featuring some Arcade Fire, and some of the most imaginative CGI I've ever seen. ------------ The HD trailer for Alice in Wonderland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =LjMkNrX60mA ------------ Patton Oswalt in a very un-funny role as a football-obsessed everyman in Big [...]
I promise to write a rundown of the 2009 Newport Folk Festival, complete with a review of the Avett Brothers plying on the Fort Stage to the masses, but until then, I'll leave with you with a live song that promises to be on the new album "I And Love And You". Enjoy. "Last night I dreamt the whole night long I woke with a head full of songs I spent the whole day I wrote 'em down, but its a shame Tonight I'll burn the lyrics, 'Cause every chorus was your name"
Bob Boilen, NPR's All Songs Considered honcho asks Tony "You seem so comfortable with your voice... do you remember when that happened for you?", and the shy, but honest Dekker replies, "About a year ago?"
The Next Generation of Influence....The Gaslight Anthem and Their '59 Sound The Gaslight Anthem's sophomore album The '59 Sound has been around for almost a year now. It's taken me that long to warm up to it. That's unfair to say. It's taken me that long to realize that I had a gem in my collection of rhinestones. So, how do you fit Springsteen, The Dropkick Murphys, and Social Distortion into your sound, while peppering in some Clash ethos, some dustbowl-era Americana, and some true vintage soul? Singer [...]
How do you fit an upright bass, an ancient pump organ, and a set of crotales in a tiny room? Whiskey. Observe. Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com

Today's latest from the pleasure-centers deeply embedded in my brain. The rest is clogged malted hops and bong resin...

First and foremost , go and buy Joe Pug's EP, Nation of Heat . It's incredible. It's more than a little Dylan, but with, well, feeling? Smart, emotive, real songs, with actual meaning. In fact, if you like it, head to his website. He's got an offer for you. His first full-length comes out sometime this year, and I can't wait. Joe will be joining one of the strongest Newport Folk Festival's ever on August 2 this summer at Fort Adams in Newport RI. You'll need to go. [...]

Some bands can sing inside a barn or on a door step or in a trashcan and it'll sound good. Ben Nichols owes a lot of that to his voice. At once grizzly beyond his years and drowned in a bottle, Nichols' pipes create imagery of a dusty americana. Of graveled roads and pickup trucks, whiskey bottles and jukeboxes. That's all I need to hear. Cue the record. Get me a beer. These tracks represent the rough mixes for Lucero's first s/t album, along with some unreleased tracks from the same session. They were invited to record [...]
Mos Def visited Jimmy Fallon this week , and delivered a searing version of his new track "Casa Bey", complete with full on Roots integration. But up first, Jimmy and Questo get Tricky... all Jimmy needs is the beat....watch. And after the jump.... Mos Def and The Roots performing "Casa Bey", a.k.a. there's still real hip hop music being created (just turn off the radio).
A Tony Award stage prop does something that I've been trying to do for ages... punch Poison's Bret Michaels in the face. Bret was good-natured backstage about the gaffe, but he was treated later for a fractured nose, and a bruised ego. I've watched this about 5 times today, and I'm lovin it.

I always knew there was something even MORE promising about Lars Anderson than his hitting abilities. Currently playing for the Red Sox's Double A affiliate Portland Sea Dogs, Lars speaks with a reporter about having to miss the Fenway debut of on of his favorite bands.... Thanks to Mike Dixon for digging this one up for me! http://www.glidemagazine.com/h iddentrack/red-sox-prospect-lo ves-the-phish/ via http://necn.com/Boston/Sports/ 2009/06/06/Sox-prospect-Lars-A nderson-not/1244333106.html

Alright, so I don't really care for U2. Anything after Joshua Tree , actually. Ok, well, let me be honest, I just don't like what Bono has become. I can't stand him. Maybe, just maybe, it's his pretentious image and 1200 dollar sunglasses, or maybe it's his unquenchable need to use his name, face and star-status to hoch every single cry-for-humanity worldwide. If a tree falls in Nairobi, Bono's gonna be there to cry about it and to raise money to fix it. Sorry if I'm being insensitive. I'll stop. I'm sure he's [...]

I'm sure he's a good man at heart, but alot of people donate their time and money, and don't necessarily try to draw that much attention to themselves. Just sayin' [...]

As evidenced by several posts in the last couple months, there are very few things floating in the blogosphere that have hit my ears quite like Dan Auerbach's album Keep It Hid . In fact, "When The Night Comes", the centerpiece of the set that follows, will be featured prominently at my wedding reception later this month. Here's his set on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic from earlier this year. I love it when the people in charge are also big fans. Take a listen. Enjoy!!! Dan [...]
