Kickstart this!

Kickstart this! Queen Esther, one of the worlds best jazz vocalists (in my humble opinion), has made new recordings for a full album, together with some really stellar musicians, including people who have been playing with CassandraWilson/Sun Ra Arkestra & James "Blood" Ulmer and others. She needs help with the funding for mixing/mastering, art work/graphic design, and manufacturing everything. Please support independent musicians!

Jon Gomm - Passionflower

Jon Gomm - Passionflower I tweet a lot, and i had this draft ready, but i forgot to post it to the blog. Here it is, finally: It's the first track in a series of coming singles from english singer/songwriter Jon Gomm, one really creative guitarplayer. I'll let the music speak for itself. This track and the follow-up single (which is a cover of The Police's "message in a bottle", performed in a way you've never heaed before), are both available as "pay what you want"-downloads from the store on the webpage of Jon Gomm: [...]

Lianne La Havas - Lost and Found

Lianne La Havas - Lost and Found You will get shorter posts in this blog now and then when i want to share something without writing a full review, and especially lately this has been needed as a kind of respond to all this great music that's is coming out in england right now! Here's an artist that i've been following since this summer, she is from england, her father's family was Greek & her mother's Jamaican. Her name is Lianne La Havas. She writes her own songs and plays the guitar. Wonderful voice. Here below is a beautiful song called [...]

Michael Kiwanuka - Tell Me A Tale / I'm getting ready

Michael Kiwanuka - Tell Me A Tale / I'm getting ready This will be a short posting. 23 years old, londoner. Two really strong debut-EP's with great melodies and supersolid performances from Michael Kiwanuka . The full album is coming in february next year. Yes, i'll also mention Bill Withers and Terry Callier, for reference, but this is 2011. Today is nov 5 and the world is not the same as it used to be. For music, i feel there's a hope after all, with artists like this. Amazing singer/songwriter that i can't stop listening to. [...]

Lay Low - Brostinn Strengur

Lay Low - Brostinn Strengur I do not know why I wrote this blog in English for nearly seven years. Maybe because I daily speak Spanish even though I am Swedish and live in Sweden and sometimes resort to English when words are not enough? Yet, I mean, my English is quite ok now, not least because of all of today's "social media", and the exercise by communicating with English speaking people every now and then, everywhere on the net, it can provide a lot of practice for those who are open to it. But to say that [...]

Hangnail Phillips - Forestalling The Inevitable

Hangnail Phillips - Forestalling The Inevitable " ...As when a man goes so deep into his dream he will never remember he was there when he returns again to his view ". - Tomas Tranströmer, "Track". W hen you're down and out it's time for a stronger dose again to save what can be saved. Put on Hangnail Phillips. haven't heard of him? No, of course you haven't, but that's why you read this blog isn't it? There's hope. The last time we heard from [...]

Guestpost: Matt Stevens On His Desert Island Disc

Guestpost: Matt Stevens On His Desert Island Disc OK, its not cool but I love Radiohead - OK Computer to be honest, as a rock record its got so much going for it. If I was going to be stuck on an island I'd want a record that had a lot of depth to investigate. OK Computer is really deep in terms of arrangement, lots of intertwining guitar parts. I really admire the amount of range and ambition in it. I remember when I used to work in a warehouse, years ago and Paranoid Android used to come on when it first came out. Was [...]

Guadalupe Plata - s/t

Guadalupe Plata - s/t In case you for some unknown reason missed the "pussy fuzzed" music of jon spencer and his blues explosion, and then all of the epigons that followed, well you are in for a real threat. But wait, skip that and go straight to spain and the band Guadalupe Plata, cause in spain a lot has happened since the dictator ruled. Now the spaniards like vacations and they travel a lot again. It's party 24/7 The result, well, an album like this. Un pollo purely roto. What does it all mean? Ask common. What do i know? [...]

Slowgold - Havet

Slowgold - Havet Amanda Werne. Photo by Anna Gideonsson Friends of psychedelica/neoprogressive rock... attention! Some members from (imho), one of swedens best underground bands right now, den stora vilan , from Gothenburg (pls check out their selftitled debut, highly recommended), have a band called "Slowgold". They are now recording their forthcoming debut album to be released this autumn, and here's a track i have started to like a lot. It's a song written by Amanda Werne, called "havet". Enjoy: [...]

Supreme Court - Sun Hex

Supreme Court - Sun Hex Its naturally on key so i like it enough to write this short review. I like the feeling it gives me. I like an artist who has something to say, next to Iggy. 18 years it took to make this one hour, ten new tracks followup to the 93 "The Supreme Court Goes Electric", and i think that this time the world is ready for The Supreme Court. Joining Glenn Phillips on this album is vocalist Jeff Calder , and Anne Richmond Boston of the Swimming Pool Q's, and on bass there's Mike [...]

Kaz Simmons - Dandelions

Kaz Simmons - Dandelions The album starts with a groovy laid-back tune called 'whatever', then tunes in to the suggestive reflection 'stuck', and from there Simmons takes us into' Pacharama', her memories of a trip to the jungle, to times long gone by. Time for the best song of the album, the title-track: 'The dandelion' with it's intricate harmonies and weeping guitar. The magic starts and leads us into to a piece called 'almost', where we truly can enjoy the delicate voice of Kaz. After this melody comes 'the wall', a murky jazz reflection with the message of 'just do [...]

Cliff Eberhardt and James Lee Stanley - All Wood and Doors

Cliff Eberhardt and James Lee Stanley - All Wood and Doors I've been listening to a lovely album this week. It's James Lee Stanley s latest project (you may remember his 2005 project 'all wood and stones' with John batdorf?), this time it's an album called 'All Wood And Doors'. James lee and Cliff Eberhardt has taken the songs of The Doors and rearranged them for acoustic guitars in a beautiful way. There are 12 the doors-songs on the album: 1. Break On Through 2. Love Me Two Times 3. Take It As It Comes 4. Strange [...]

D'callaos - El borde donde termina el mar

D'callaos - El borde donde termina el mar Regular readers of this little blog knows that i love flamenco. And by flamenco i mean good flamenco, of course, like all the music we cover here. While i can not go deeper into the subject of flamenco right now (go straight to Camaron et al... then to "la nueva flamenco" via Enrique Morente and others for a start... It's an Acquired taste), as the time doesn't permit me, i thought anyway i was going to post this short recommendation as it's an album i have come to like a lot. In bad times, and in good times. [...]

Video: Shona Foster - God Only Knows

Video: Shona Foster - God Only Knows Here's Shona Foster performing a song that needs no presentation: God only knows. One of the greatest songs ever written imho. Choosing covers to record or perform is an art itself. This one was an excellent choice. The right singer who can make the best out of this classic melody and make it her own. Recorded live on the BBC2 Dermot O'Leary show the other day. Lovely. In case you still haven't listened to Shona Fosters full length debut The Moon & You (my review), now [...]

Video: Israel Nash Gripka live @ Popeye Hengelo

Video: Israel Nash Gripka live @ Popeye Hengelo Record store day. if you get it, you get it. Here's a great performance made by Israel Nash Gripka, promoting his astonishing album " Barn Doors and Concrete Floors ", outside the famous record store Popeye (in Hengelo, The Netherlands). It reminded me a little on that classic take where Springsteen stopped for a while on the streets of Copenhagen. A rising star. no doubt, Gripka ! There are three parts on youtube, this is the first part: Thank you to the one that recorded [...]

Trey Brown - Trey Brown & Mission Dorado

Trey Brown - Trey Brown & Mission Dorado Most difficult to review are those bands that are "almost there", if you get what i mean. Trey Brown & Mission Dorado is one of those bands. I mean, you hear immediately that they stand out. They have the melodies, the right twang, the references. They even try adding the chorus on all the right places, and succeed at it, but still there's so much more that could have (or could not have) been done with a little more patience. But patience is a virtue these days, and [...]
