YELLE & MADEON One of the BEST electropop I've heard in recent times... Madeon is a 17 year old from France who has been remixing music for big stars like DeadMau5 and Yelle. Pretty damn impressive. Looking forward to much more from this youngster. Que Veux Tu (Madeon Remix) [Yelle] BEST COAST If the Beach Boys were reincarnated (Ok, I know they're mostly still alive but...) as hipsters from LA, they [...]

Poised for action. The great thing about the old school Nokia cell phone was that it doubled both as communication technology and communicative weaponry. Someone says something gnarly about your mom to your face? Throw your boulder of a Nokia cell phone in his/her face like you know JWoww did when she used to beat up girls like Sammy in high school. Message received! RAPHAEL SAADIQ He's old school in the New School, if you know what I mean. [...]

KANYE WEST I'm just gonna say it: I love Kanye West... the producer. Kanye West the man is a different issue for me. And I have to ask: should we judge the man? Or should we judge the artist? Here's a song from 8082s and Heartaches that I recently discovered that is fantastic. My new early morning thinking song as I drive to the hospital. Everything in the world is quiet, like I am all alone in the universe. I know Kanye is an amazing producer because this [...]

First, an AWESOME video showing every Kanye West sample ever. THE NATIONAL I love the National. I was first hooked on them when I heard "Fake Empire," specifically by the line "we are half asleep in a fake empire." What a killer line!! It's poetry, I tell ya. ...I know nothing about poetry. But anyways, ever since then, I've been a big fan. But it's not just their tendency for musical poetry [...]

DUFFY "Tell me, can we ever be... serious?" mp3: Serious [Duffy] I was just watching this live video of Duffy singing "Serious": I love how there is a whole movement of singers coming out of Britain who embrace schools of jazz and soul music (Adele, Duffy, Joss Stone, etc), arenas where true emotions still come through in music. As much as I like fun, dancey pop music as much as the next American, I also need to [...]

Fusion cuisine was first introduced in the 1970s and has been done notably by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck with the opening of his restaurant Chinois. More recently, dishes like Korean tacos (Korean-Mexican fusion) have become more popular as chefs begin to recognize and act upon the underlying palatable connectivities between different culture's food. Whether the texture of one dish meshes well with the spices of another, or vice versa, fusion dishes can be an eye opening, ahem, taste bud awakening experience. If you haven't figured it out by now, the reason I speak of fusion food is not [...]

ELLIE GOULDING In celebration of the fact that I will be seeing Ellie Goulding LIVE on March 24th at Webster Hall (pause for excited hyperventilation), I had to post my favorite remix of Starry Eyed. I think Ellie is highly underrated over here on our side of the Atlantic and I hope her tour will make her more popular here as I think she makes some of the best electro-pop (aside from the South Koreans) out there right now. Her songs also have meaning which goes to show that pop [...]

Jessie J The good news about Jessie J is that she can really belt it out. It seems like she is trying to become the bad-ass version of Katy Perry, in terms of image. And I'm okay with that since Katy Perry's screechy voice makes me want to blow up fireworks in my head. Seriously. Will they please stop playing that godawful song, the actual sound of fireworks is more aurally appealing. Jessie J, on the other hand, has some serious vocal chop s. The [...]

dirty lethal blues. In a word, it's melancholy. DELTA SPIRIT mp3: Bushwick Blues [Delta Spirit] Fantastic joint. JAMIROQUAI I love Jay. Love him. Not really a "blues" song but I had to include it because it's just a great song. The sentiment is in there though, the melancholy. mp3: Blue Skies [Jamiroquai] JOHN MAYER [...]

Like a robot craving gigabytes, I hunger for electro-pop music. It's easily one of my favorite genres of music out there. The South Koreans especially do a fantastic job of making electro-pop music. But that's another story for another post. Here are some spastically great electro-pop songs about space. MIAMI HORROR mp3: Moon Theory [Miami Horror] BAG RAIDERS Having already made this fantastic [...]
CHEW LIPS mp3: Solo [Chew Lips] - Must DOWNLOAD*** KINGS OF LEON They are hot. That is all. mp3: Happy ALone [Kings of Leon] JACK JOHNSON Admit it. You like Jack Johnson. He's just one of those [...]
The Los Angeles Times reports that Gwyneth Paltrow will be singing a PG version of Cee-lo's "Fuck You" (renamed "Forget You") during her performance on "Glee" coming in 2 weeks. In lieu of the news, I have written a post about amnesia. Enjoy! ------------ PAPER ROUTE mp3: Are We All Forgotten [Paper Route] (via 4shared.com so go to the link) [...]

Kool and the Gang Now this here is real old school. When Kool and the Gang is mentioned, you probably think of disco. I love disco, but "Summer Madness" is not disco. It's early Kool and it is a sick sick song. The kind of song that makes you go "ohhh...now I see why Kool got so famous." So, if you love music, if you love summer, if you love madness, if you love passion, if you love people doing what they were meant to do, then hear this . [...]

ALLURE Beautiful usage of the xylophone to create electronica. mp3: Renaissance [Allure] via Dippedindollars.com myspace JANELLE MONAE Janelle is an auteur in every sense. Uniform? Check. Own hairstyle? Check. "Tightrope" personalized dance moves? Check. Beauty? Check. Creating music that isn't only for the sake of making money? Check. Monae is attempting to revamp [...]

***California Gurls [Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg] When Nikhil and I met Katy Perry at an acoustic performance back in '07, we both agreed that she was "ehh okay." I wrote in my blog that she was mediocre and her songs were too contrived. I still think she remains mediocre in terms of actual music talent, however, I cannot deny the incredible catchiness of her music and her allure as a pop artist. I'm sure this song will become a big summer anthem, especially with Snoop Dogg by her side (who doesn't love [...]

The Republic Tigers mp3: The Nerve [The Republic Tigers] myspace Joss Stone What a voice. I'm a big fan of the strong, jazzy voices and in my book, Joss Stone is a vocal pundit. She definitely lands on my list of favorite singers (along with James Morrison, etc.). But can we forgive her for being in the 2006 dragon movie "Eragon"? What were YOU thinking, Joss? [...]

1. Hawksley Workman If you watch "How You Met Your Mother" at all, I don't even need to start up with all the Canadian jokes. But all jokes aside, I did not know how much I would like the music of a man whose first name is "Hawksley." And surprisingly, the answer is a lot. I received this song in my gmail a couple days ago and I am really liking it a lot. I love the yodeling intro, the fidgety noises, the loopy lyrics. It all came together as a great [...]

Koala-esque Australian singer Lenka covers Modest Mouse. mp3: Gravity Rides Everything [Lenka] The second Sara hits the high note at the chorus ("Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.")... beautiful. mp3: Gravity [Sara Bareilles] mp3: Gravity (Live at the Fillmore) [Sara Bareilles] Some background on the song Gravity (from Wikipedia): "Mayer suggested in an interview with the magazine Performing [...]

The better thing to come out of Alaska: Kate Earl. Earl makes pop music, but it's not all completely manufactured and auto-tuned. Personally, I think "Nobody" by Kate Earl was one of the catchiest, sexiest ("Nobody hikes up my skirt like you") songs of the year and yet she has been unable to garner the amount of popularity that marketing machine Katy Perry has been able to gain. "Nobody" is subtle, a bit dark with a pinch yearning... and an utterly alluring beat. Hopefully, Earl finds more of the commercial success she deserves in 2010! mp3: [...]

* Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart (Mase Remix) [Alicia Keys] Alicia Key's newest album "The Element Of Freedom" is dropping like cryptococcus neoformans infected pigeon poop (sorry, medical school verbal diarrhea) on December 15, but thanks to the magical machine that is piracy on the internet, the first single "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" is already floating around the cyberspace for eager ears. It's nothing especially innovative or different from songs on her last album "As I Am," but it's still pop gold from Ms. Keys. I guess if it ain't broke, don't give it vancomycin [...]
