GROSS MAGIC Teen Jamz EP Fat Possum The press release on this says it sounds like "ELO, Smith Westerns, Future Grunge …" but that's just because they're too chicken-shit to say it sounds like Mudd or Chicory Tip. Of course, it's not that simple, as the singing, plot twists, arrangements and wistfulness of this wonderfully inventive five-song revelation prove that Sam McGarrigle, the one-man band behind the project, could go in any direction he wants. And in fact, some of these songs do evoke the Pixies, Flaming Lips, Suede, Ween, even John Lennon. [...]

Brock Potucek ABBY TRAVIS IV Educational Recordings Abby Travis has been around forever, and this is finally the solo album she SHOULD have been doing for the last couple decades—a glam-themed rocker that lets her voice get full-on Sparks while the dueling licks and chiming harpsichords around her lift ever upward into a world of ROCK! Travis was in the Love Dolls in the 80s, and went on to play session bass with everybody from Beck to the Bangles to the Meat Puppets to KMFDM, yet [...]
I loved this song when it came out as an album track on their debut record in 2008. Now Eddie Chacon and his collaborator (and wife) Sissy Sainte-Marie have re-released the tune as a single, which they're promoting via a new bad-assed video: It'll also come out on the upcoming Polyamorous Affair album, The Future Isn't What It Used to Be , produced by Best Coast -er and all-around babe bewitcher Bobb Bruno . Keep your eyes peeled. -D. M. Collins

Sonny Vincent's Testors are the great lost punk band of New York City '77—high-intensity guitar warfare at its finest that went almost totally unreleased until a trickle of issues in the 2000s and a deluxe discog on John Reis' Swami that presented the Testors in all their gory glory. Vincent has always played music—generally alongside the kind of people who use their instrument like a machine gun—and he brings twenty years of punk rock 'n' roll to Blue Star tonight. This interview by Chris Ziegler. You say you use humor to get out of tough situations—ever [...]
