I received the new Soda & Suds track, Zapatista , at 2am this morning (Houston time). This new Reebok "commercial" featuring the Rolf Honey remix of Tristsee/Joie reminds me a lot of the video for the TEPR remix of A Cause des Garçons . I never understood why, but a couple of years ago mainstream music listeners were told to believe Houston was some kind of renaissance hip-hop town. The nation was enthralled with the sample-heavy hooks, talks of purple stuff/lean , and screwed and chopped albums . There was Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Chamillionaire and others I can't remember because of their overwhelming mediocrity. I just downloaded this new Hearts on Fire remix by Holy Ghost! today. In standard DFA fashion, Holy Ghost took a five minute song and stretched it into an eight minute exercise in tight basslines and sharp percussions. Truthfully, I don't even know if the last 3 minutes are part of the original Hearts On Fire . My advice, don't worry about it, just go along for the ride.
