Well the countdown to the festive season is well and truly underway and we seem to be marking it here Down Under with a steady stream of seriously humid days, flash flooding and an evergrowing plague of locusts. Merry fucking Christmas. Some tunes for your troubles? I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day - Pedro The Lion Star of Wonder - Sufjan Stevens [...]

I first came across the music of White Pines last year with the release of the beautiful five track EP A Face Made Of Wood - an EP which I absolutely loved . I was therefore stoked to discover that Joseph Scott, the man behind the Pines, had released his debut full length in the form of 'The Falls'. Album reviews are so hard for me to write, but when you love an album you almost feel obliged to dedicate at least three or four paragraphs to it, don't you? For some [...]

Remember that week in high school when you kept a diary because you thought you were interesting? And then ten years later you found it and were stupid enough to read it? And then you accidentally tore out all the pages and fed them to your goat and felt a whole lot better? Reading old posts makes me regret the day that Billy left for that farm. Fave Find - Murder Mystery (January 2008) Four piece New York outfit Murder Mystery have been busy since their 2008 debut [...]

I have twitter to thank for this band discovery - they followed me, I followed them... you know how it goes. Trespassers William are Seattle based Matt Brown and Anna-Lynne Williams and they play this shoegazey stuff that reminds me a lot of Lanterns On The Lake . I'm not making a direct sound comparison here necessarily, but both bands have the same dreamy kinda quality, and also feature some seriously beautiful female vocals. And this song, 'Lie In The Sound'... it's gorgeous. Lie In The Sound - [...]

Been a while since I posted any coverage. Wrap your ears around this and then head to Music For Kids Who Don't Read Good in order to check out a bunch of other 2010 covers. Fuck You (Cee-Lo Cover) - Anjulie (image via ) Filed under: Coverage Tagged: Anjulie , Coverage , mp3 , Music

I mentioned Weepop Records the other day when I wrote about The Just Joans , and it turns out that they have many artists on their label that are right up my alley, all of whom have a free mp3 or two available on the site for free . Drew from Across The Kitchen Table also informs me that they send lollies with every music purchase! Well, he said sweets actually, but this Aussie girl just can't pull that off without feeling silly, I'm afraid. Here are a few tracks that grabbed [...]

Lee over at Knox Road posted about Hey Rosetta! touring the US this month and not only did he remind me just how much I love these guys, he also alerted me to an mp3 they've made available on their site. You give them your email, they give you the mp3. A pretty sweet deal I reckon. And the song! It's a live performance of new track 'Young Glass' at SXSW earlier in the year and it's beautiful. The cello and violin especially, are magic. Check out the video below and then go here [...]

This track is so completely the opposite of the stuff I usually go for but I love it. I find it's best served late at night, and a decent pair of headphones are a must. If you have a beer or two under your belt, even better. Sun - Kenton Slash Demon Details on Denmark's Kenton Slash Demon seem to be pretty scarce but you can head to their myspace to check out another track called 'Matter' and [...]

Sydney's The Jezabels released their five track EP Dark Storm last month, available for purchase via their website . Check out 'Mace Spray' - they just keep getting better, I reckon. Definitely a band to keep a close eye on. Mace Spray - The Jezabels The Decemberists have a new album in the works entitled The King Is Dead , due for release January 18. Head to their website for a give-us-your-email free [...]
I found out about Siskiyou over at Thanks Captain Obvious, while checking out his October Mixtape . It's thanks to a review of their self-titled debut album by my mate Sandy over at Slowcoustic that I also discovered that the band is made up of one current and one ex-member of Great Lake Swimmers and since I already love them it's no wonder that I fell for Siskiyou straight away. I've not been able to stop listening to this one all afternoon. Love the understated beginning and the solo in the middle. And is [...]

Hopped into the car to drive to work the other day and the radio was playing a Mountain Goats song! I've never heard them on the radio before so I was pretty stoked and even better - it was one I'd never heard before. Alibi - The Mountain Goats It's CLASSIC MG's isn't it? I bloody love everything about it, especially those last few lines. How the hell does he keep coming up with all these awesome songs?? [...]

This is seriously the biggest pile of pox I've come across in a long time. Gimmick, much? Fucksake. Nobody Listens To Silence - Ryan Adams (image via Autobuffet ) Filed under: Leftovers Tagged: bullshit , gimmick , mp3 , Music , rubbish , Ryan Adams

(wattle image is mine, taken in country Victoria last month) It's currently spring here in Oz, although you wouldn't bloody know it thanks to some unseasonably cold days this past week or so. I am HANGING OUT for our first 30 degree day! Usually here in October it's been summer weather for two weeks already. Up in the Northern part of the world though, people are all about the autumn tunes, with two mixes coming to my attention these past few days. Heather over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends has a 20+ [...]

If you're a fan of The National , or even just a casual observer of the internets, you've no doubt come across a review or two of their latest offering High Violet . Though it was released in May, it's taken me ages to get to the point where I can cobble together a post about this album. It took me many, many listens before I could work out whether I liked it or not. It seemed darker or thicker than their previous offerings, the melodies wouldn't stick in my head and [...]

I'm buried under work and inertia, but I'm still here. While I'm being slack and unimaginative, why don't you visit Cover Lay Down , the source of this very different take on a bit of Grease tuneage? You're The One That I Want (Grease Cover) - Angus & Julia Stone Angus & Julia Stone are currently on the road, hitting up the US, Europe and the UK before heading back home for a string of festival dates [...]

I had an absolute turd of a day today. On the upside, the weather in my part of the world at the moment is stunning. Weather - Meursault The above track is from All Creatures Make Merry , the most recent full length from Scotland's wonderful Meursault . I've been very remiss in not reviewing this album, which is largely because I lack the necessary brain power right now and the perfect turn of phrase, but [...]

Sigh. I'm a very happy girl tonight. Victory - The Walkmen Filed under: Leftovers Tagged: 2010 Premiers , Australia , Collingwood Football Club , I bloody love my team

Pet hates. We all have them, right? Doing the dishes, junk mail, shoddy punctuation, totally unnecessary plastic wrappers, people who can't bloody well hang on to their rubbish until they can find a bloody bin... Sometimes though, our pet hates cease being small annoyances and become a bit of a problem. In my case, it's small talk. I really, really suck at it and most of the time I hate having to do it. I mean sometimes, I just can't be arsed making up stuff about how my day was or how good all this rain is or [...]

I am wrecked. Shattered. Knackered. Exhausted. Spent. Here are a few tunes that have nothing to do with the above sentence in any way. Teenager - New Saxons (Australia) | myspace More & More & More - The Mountains & The Trees (Canada) | myspace Things - Frightened Rabbit (Scotland) | myspace [...]
