No Title This is what being a person who writes about music started to feel like: So I'm willing to assume you can guess as to why I've been on a bit of a hiatus from this here blog o' mine. The hiatus will continue for a few months while I try to learn how to do some things, such as: and: and, at the very least: Thank you for your patronage and [...]

No Title I went to the show the other night not really knowing what to expect. I intentionally didn't listen to any of the bands before I went, because I love being surprised. Unfortunately bands tend to pick rather fitting names, and the band names seemed to be alluding to a folky sound, which, as it turned out, was dead on. The first performer Amanda Shires took the stage at Hi-dive's usual 9:15ish start time, and only a few people migrated from the bar. After a few songs she had witched the wills [...]

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Mars Volta

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Mars Volta The Mars Volta were undeniably talented. They were the most talented group of musicians as far as ability and showmanship goes that I have seen in recent memory. These things can never be taken away from them. But the whole thing came off as a little masturbatory, so I ended up leaving before the encore. I like their music ... for the most part ... but I just couldn't handle the live show and the fans. Maybe it was just the people around me, but there were some very disrespectful people around me. I [...]

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Chromeo

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Chromeo I first heard Chromeo right after the Electric Six got pretty big, and I felt like they were just ripping off the E6. Well now that I've seen Chromeo, I can safely say this has always been a self containted disco-infused rock and roll project. Good god this man has a following. Their live set was the standard dancy and awesome, but sometimes, even though you could go into alliteration and wordiness (like I'm known to unbashfully do), that's all that needs to be said. would see again. Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin [...]

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Phoenix

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Phoenix Phoenix's newest album actually kind of un-grew on me. I loved it at first, but then I found myself skipping tracks, and then really only listening to one or two songs, then none. Their live set was kind of the same way. Their songs are very poppy and cleverly constructed, but I didn't get all tingly inside. I'm pretty sure I was alone on this one though. Phoenix - Lasso

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Passion Pit

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Passion Pit You know, other than Sleepyhead, I didn't really like much of Passion Pit's EP or LP. My buddy Jamie was absolutely bezonkers about them, so I was willing to give it a shot. You know, it was fun and synthy, but other than Sleepyhead, I couldn't really dig it that much. The Man knows how to milk a good thing, that's for damn sure. The audience was screaming so loud it almost hurt. Passion Pit - Sleepyhead

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: HEALTH

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: HEALTH A Churning Death Machine. this is the band that all the other bands came to watch. The room had a line a good 20 minutes before they went on stage, and the room was almost instantly packed. It was like the other HEALTH shows I've been to: absolutely freaking insane. No one is ever fully prepared to see a HEALTH show. HEALTH - Die Slow [...]

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Red Wire Black Wire

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Red Wire Black Wire Disco infused Bright Eyes-y synth pop that had many a person shaking their bootay. Spirited and youthful, the sound was manufactured sounding, but the emotion and soul driving it was pure and lovely. Red Wire Black Wire - Compass

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Thermals

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Thermals When the Thermals come to town, you see them. Them's the rules. Why? Because they are the most perfect pop band marauding as an indie punk band. They've written some of the most timeless pop songs ever to be thought of. See the video below the mp3 The Ther mals - When We Were Alive

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up:The Love Language

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up:The Love Language They were sweet and genuine, adorable and dancy, exciting and inviting.Their music doesn't stir me the same way it did many of the other people in the room, but I have a feeling I was in the minority in the fairly packed room. The Love Language - Stars

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Dandy Warhols

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: The Dandy Warhols I was not entirely ecstatic for the Dandy Warhol's set, mostly because I'd never really been into them, their heyday being a little bit before my time, but they held it down like true indie rockers. Solid performance that is only possible after doing it right for a while now. The Dandy Warhols - Wonderful You

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Neon Indian

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Neon Indian Dark, swimming, brooding music that mists the air around you. Taking architecture classes taught by Kevin Shields, Neon Indian was an ever changing, beautifully swirling mess of emotions, seemingly just barely on the edge of being controlled. It was evident that every bit of the show was perfectly coordinated though. A show like this couldn't be any other way. Neon Indian - Should Have Taken Acid With You

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Rahzel

Monolith Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Rahzel Rahzel is the best beat boxer on the planet. At least, that I've ever heard. Other than that, hip-hop as usual. See him for all the reasons you know you ought to. Rahzel - Night Riders
