Free dubstep EP to download from Philly Sound System (Birmingham, UK's Nic Phillips), courtesy of LU10 Records. The title track takes a stately, classically influenced approach to its dubstep and provides the best tune. The VIP mix has an annoying vocal but is a bit more dance floor friendly. Gangster Warfare is a more jittery and sub-bass. The Last Boss returns to the classical plus dubstep bass theme. It's an ok EP for free but I'm not sure I'd pay for it. http://soundcloud.com/lu10reco rds [...]

A free download track from 17 year old Seamus Patterson from Ottowa, Canada. The stuff at his soundcloud page doesn't all quite work and has a range of styles. But the track Gentle is indeed that. An ambient track, in a style he calls tamewave. There's multi-tracked harmonies, like a shoegazing Beach Boys, in the background. And gentle syths bleep quietly in the foreground. Promising. Monks & Melrose - Gentle If you want to hear more, try the album Ottowa here:

After Goldroom's lovely Angeles track a couple of months ago, here's a new mixtape for free download. For those in the UK, calling your mixtape after an insurance company is a bit strange. But this is full of Josh Legg's characteristic soft focus, sun drenched synth tunes. It starts with one of his own original and includes a number of his remixes. Of the mixtape he says " For me, as I'm about to head to Europe, I think this became a mix for all travelers. It ended up being a bit of a two part [...]

Synthsters Follow Me are back with an original track, the apocalyptic Doomsday Device , for free download. This is gradually building 80s synth fest, with bass synths very much to the fore. Not really apocalyptic but reeking of early 80s big hair and red satin jackets. And yet still somehow managing to avoid cliche. Go get the free download. Blurb: The Sound of Planetary Destruction .:. Should stuff in other languages sound odd? It shouldn't. But I still found Swedish hip hop an unsettling experience. If it had been an indie song it wouldn't have been so. Which is a long way of saying that Freddy Woods (prev here ) has a remix of fellow Swede Olle Grafström. Free download. I've no idea what this is all about but they do say Fuck a lot. And Obama gets a mention. Probably. The beats are electronic hip hop with some dubstep bass to shake things up. Interesting rather than essential. Anderson 8.30 [...]

Here's something a litle different for a Sunday from 7 Deadly Records, a sampler that mixes electronic sounds and African chants. Name your price (inc free) downloads. Data Junkies' Vudu is clicky IDM and sampled chants. Fire Toad is a bit more tribal. Third World America is a mix of African chants and House and probably the best thing here. A bit like Deep Forest (for those with longer memories) only less new agey. River of Golden Dreams is the most conventional track in its use of bleeps and bloops [...]

Not sure how I missed this mixtape from IDM heroes The Black Dog from a few months back. Free download. In keeping with the title this is the dark, brittle side of IDM. Abandon hope all ye who download here. The Black Dog - Dark Wave Vol .04 1. Container - Rattler - Editions Mego 2. Alva Noto (Featuring Anne James Chaton) - Uni Acrynom - Raster-Noton 3. I'm not a big fan of MGMT and Kids is way old. But there's something appealing in the wonderfully ramshackle, slightly lo-fi electro dance remix applied by Alexx Foxx. Like aural tartrazine to jump around. Sunny D for young clubbers, if you like. And it's a free download. http://soundcloud.com/alexxfox x

Sometimes, just trawling the net brings accidental results. This is one of those happy accidents. A Russian dubstep producer does a really nice tune - Deep Forest - that caught my attention. It might catch yours. It's dubstep but the bass isn't too searing and the pace is slow enough for morning. The other two tracks are less successful. Watch the stop-motion video for 'Haunted Gold' on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =r2T2B-k98FI which we created from gold glitter, an old scanner, 3000 images and a shed-load of patience over 8 weeks.

New on Yosucka! comes Oktored with a two part EP. A range of styles circling around techno, with this Part 1 EP being the slightly softer side of things. Listen only. EP out next month. There are five tracks on the EP. Side A starts with Relax which of course isn't and has shifting tempos but mainly moombahton, a signature feature of the EP. The Drifter has a synth appeal of Detroit techno of a certain age but with added clattering. Ines is a bit more of a consistent track which probably ought to [...]

Never heard of Masters In France before, nor indeed of remixer Ben Gomori. But this is a lovely offbeat house combination. Listen only. But there's a free download until 26 March of the original. Masters In France are a rock band compared to Kasabian (though early Police sounds equally fitting). The original version of Fall Down is classic indie rock and need not detain us. We should move swiftly to the excellent remix. The Ben Gomori remix takes the high guitar line and makes it into a rhythm track. The vocals are sampled and distorted. Piano is added [...]

French electro artist Joakim's never really registered terribly positively on my radar. But this single does have a couple on interesting remixers in The Junior Boys and Justin Robertson (in his Deadstock 33s mode). Listen or buy. Despite my lukewarm intro, the original mix of Labyrinth is a bouncy piece of electro house, with a more upbeat feel than you might expect. Canadians The Junior Boys have done some lovely light house remixes. And this is no exception. A lovely piece of synth house remixing with the bass pushed into the background. An almost Balearic feel. Justin Robertson, [...]

I know this is supposed to be a classic. But my aversion to Armand's curious facial hair and arrogance is total and stops me hearing anything. Zedd has a go at remixing it into a darker place. Listen only. The remix is electro house, which sells it kind of short. It's a really good remix that makes it sound utterly contemporary. The beats stomp but with the whoops giving it a slightly camp feel. The synths head towards rave and some sophisticated drops. A success. And if it annoysthose that like the original, good. [...]

Neil Young classic gets covered by Italo disco band and remixed as glitch dubstep. Bound to be awful, you'd think. But it isn't. Odd that. Glitch and dubstep tighten up original and return it to doomy state. Free download. http://soundcloud.com/jackdeez l

Have to admit, this isn't my choice. It's my son's. I'd have skipped past this piece of upbeat vocal Dutch house remixing. But my son absolutely loved it. Free download. He hasn't danced to very much recently, being more into yogo on Waybuloo. But this had him giving it everything, while telling me " Am dancing ". This has strong shades of glitterball disco, a ridiculously upbeat tempo, and those 80s vocals. A lovely gentle dub techno release on Munich's Eintakt Records from Frank Hellmond. The pick of the bunch is a Marko Furstenberg remix, which gives a little bounce to the original. Listen only (longish clips), plus older track to download. Frank Hellmond is head of dreiton.net and produces a warm slow brand of dub techno. In many ways, quite similar to Matthaias Springer of Diametral Records. The whole EP is quite laid back. The standout track is the Marko Fuerstenberg remix of French Girl In Manhatten . The original is almost too soft to pay attention. With [...]

Is it me or does the picture look like a Grange Hill out take. " Ro-Land what are you doing with Zammo? " Meanwhile, the irritatingly young Lanster teenagers Bondax produce some light dubstep/2 step/garage thingie for free download. Just Us is filtered and fx'd all over the shop but still ends up sohpisticated pop. Not entirely clear I like it mind. I think it's the harmonies leading it to flirt with boyband territory. http://soundcloud.com/bondax

New release for Wool on Plant Music. This is downtempo house / techno. Listen only. Out next week. Wool (Glen Brady) is formerly DJ Wool. His biog says " DJ, Producer, Remixer from Ireland by way of New York, living in Berlin. Half of Indie Dance band The Glass ." And so to the EP. Rehabilitate It (Original Mix) is the one to head for. This is slow techno, with some lovely early 90s choppy piano. The Pools remix slows it down and smooths it out. A bit too much. The Good In [...]
