Fort Romeau is the South Londoner best known as La Roux’s keyboarder. Recently he has made a name for himself as a deep and raw house producer releasing on the likes of 100% Silk. Here he brings his typically tough brand of house to Holy Other’s ‘Held’ – from their 2012 LP – injecting a surging momentum and robust drums to the ghostly soundscape.

It has been confirmed that the house producer and vocalist Romanthony died on May 7 at the age of 45. It is said the New Jersey DJ, whose real name was Anthony Moore, died of complications of kidney disease. Although Moore was best known for his vocal work on Daft Punk’s 2000 chart-topping ‘One More Time’, he was also an acclaimed pioneer of soulful house music. Boys Noize was in the process of collaborating with Romathony. Following the news of his passing, the electro producer tweeted: “Romanthony and me were working on such an amazing song together. He said [...]

It’s interesting that the RAC rework takes top bill on this mammoth remix package of 19-piece disco band Escort. Because it is the Greg Wilson mix that so visibly stands head and shoulders above the rest (totalling a cumbersome 12 remixes). Escort’s original ‘Cocaine Blues’ is a sort-of cover of Dillinger’s 1976 ‘Cocaine In My Brain’ that additionally pilfers a bassline from People Choice’s ‘Do It anyway You Wanna’ and some extra lyrics from Hamilton Bohannon’s ‘Disco [...]
A lush, tropical remix from Mano Le Tough just in time for Summer.

Ben La Desh is back for the third outing on Sleazy Beats’ offshoot Black Ops with three cuts that are at once simple, subtle and satisfyingly rich in texture (having previously kick-starter the sub label with Stop That Groove Girl , which centred around an insatiable, heads-down percussive groove). On the opener for Rebound Round EP , the Dutch producer slings a crisp beat over a dream-like churn of murky, otherwordly synths. ‘Escape Route’ [...]
Tribal and analogue synth work collide on this blissful flipside to Young Marco's latest 123.

Rhye, like The XX and Klaxons before them, have become the centre of attention for remixers. Maurice Faulton and Jeff Samuels have already produced standout Rhye remixes this year (amidst many more limp efforts), and here the pop-leaning UK duo that gave us “Baby I Got That” have a stab with surprisingly subtle and restrained results. They strip the track back into a gently bumping downbeat affair. Cop the freebie below:
A 6th Borough Project classic from 2010: a chunky 100 BPM disco stomper with a serious dose of funk.

Wolf Music Recordings has cemented itself as a consistent purveyor of forward-thinking house and disco. Its early 2010 vinyl releases ( Paw To The Floor EP in particular) are dead cert classics that helped introduce a host of now familiar names like Greymatter, Session Victim, Dead Rose Music Company and KRL. The Wolf family seem to be on a renewed winning streak: Medlar’s ‘The Sun’ dropped back in January and was one of the label’s highlights, a sublime and surprisingly authentic-sounding [...]

The Fatback Band’s gloriously funky 1974 hit ‘Wicky Wacky’ has been given a couple of edits over the years. Most successfully by Jamie 3:26, but his take is a rambling 10 minutes in length and has various BPM change-ups that make it hard to mix. Whilst Cosmic Kids’ version isn’t a huge departure, aside from some metallic tinkles, it is certainly shorter and altogether a great little warm-up tool to get the party started. Thanks to Sloth Boogie for another tasty freebie. Cosmic Kids - Big Leg Girls
Kurt Maloo's deep croon is submerged in lush, subaqautic bass on this remix from disco don Ray Mang. Lovely.

Whatever you think about 'Get Lucky', Daft Punk's first single in eight years, you can't argue it ain't catchy. And so we see the floodgates open to literally hundreds of crummy bootlegs and Youtube edits. The ever-reliable Drop Our Orchestra however have dropped a nicely restrained take (topping Greg Wilson's somewhat limp effort) that'll come in handy for the disco DJs. It retains the funk and soul of the original, whilst injecting a punchier, floor-friendlier beat, and extending the running time. They're also wise to cut out Pharell's painful intro and focus solely on the catchy bits - in particular Daft [...]

John Swing's underground releases focus on down and dirty house music, and by that I mean raw and dusty not warpy and silly. You'll be hard pressed to find his releases, all confined to limited vinyl runs. But his mix for Resident Advisor last month is a pretty good indicator of his sound - and one of the most groove-laden RA podcasts this year. 01. 3 Chairs - Blackbone Waltz [Three Chairs – 3CHR 3] 02. Recloose - MYM 230 [Rush Hour - RH 112-12-2] 03. Jordan Fields - Shoobeedoo (Ladie Of [...]

With its 15 th release, Uncanny Valley continues its impressive run of intriguing house music. So far confined to underground cultdom, the Dresden label returns to the various artist EPs that made its first two outings so arresting – a pair of undisputed classics that sported material from relatively unknown artists. The same can be said for the German imprint’s latest jaunt, or at least in the sense that it features one virtual unknown: Eltron John (a disco [...]

A freebie by way of Croydon wunderkind Joy Orbison, who rubs together two seemingly disparate elements : a sleazy, r'n'b acapella from Donell Jones and a concrete-hard techno rhythm. Together they work rather nicely. You can catch Joy Orbison at the Oval on May 4th here . Joy Orbison - Donell
Meet. , a new club night nestled in the intimate basement of Plan B, Brixton, is gearing up for its second outing next week. With a concept that aims to put the music at the core, Meet. places a single DJ at the helm for the duration of the night, allowing for a "four hour tour of their extensive record collection". The first outing saw Trouble Vision resident Park Ranger hit the decks with a blinding set played to a rapt dancefloor. Next Friday, Pelski will step up to the plate: expect slo-mo disco, soulful, obscure house, plus some rawer bangers as the [...]

An older one from Deep Space Orchestra, aka Chris Barker and Si Murray, is being thrown out for free on their Soundcloud page (limited to 150 downloads, so act quick). 'Outliers' is plucked from the first release on the duo's own Use of Weapons imprint some two years ago, and it's a spacey analogue trip, all rubbery bass lines and squiggly, fizzing synths that swell and retract amidst loose conga beats. (Thanks to Slothboogie for the heads up on this one). Deep Space Orchestra - Outliers - Use [...]

An upbeat disco rework from Ruben & Ra, who go to work on R&B group The Whispers' 1981 hit 'Its a Love Thing'. The funk duo turn the track into a choppy, groove-laden disco stomper. Grab a free download below for the wee price of tweet. Download . Ruben & Ra - The Whispers - It's a Love Thing (Ruben & Ra's Furry Lover edit)

‘Outside Amour’ is the first single from Man Tear, the new project from Studio Barnhus founders Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist. Far removed from the two Swedes’ usual deep house offerings, Outside Amore is as an unexpected slice of camp, cosmic disco pop, with more than a whiff of DFA labelmates Hercules & Love Affair. The nine-minute single is restrained and quirky in equal measures, plus a healthy dose of that by now familiar Nordic disco [...]

The debut of Stockholm’s Henrik Berqvist is, simply put, no-nonsense house music. And it also allows me to wheel out that much underused adjective in contemporary electronic music: ‘wintery’ (a welcome change from our usual partiality to ‘summery’ jams). The a-side is a tender, multi-layered piece of shuffling house: a delicate violin loop instils an otherworldly gleam that’s grounded by ragged percussion and a bottom-heavy beat. But it is the simpler of [...]
