Awright, I guess I should stop beating around the bush and just say that in my humble opines Pavement is the best band there is. I think indie labels feel too self-conscious to make greatest hits packages, feeling that songs need to be heard in the context of their albums, or that such compilations are the province of K-Tel, et cetera. This forces me into the awkward position of trying to sequence all-Pavement mixtapes that NO ONE wants to hear, least of all my wife (tho she prefers these to the all-Destroyer mixes, which even I can't [...]
Hadda weekend so rad, I couldn't write about it until Tuesday! Taken By Trees - Sweet Child O' Mine The Last Town Chorus - Modern Love The Watson Twins - Just Like Heaven Nouvelle Vague - The Guns of Brixton Le Tigre - I'm So Excited

Guest posting tonight is Rob Booher, the only guy I ever met who could pull off zipping his coat up all the way and still look cool . Its Rob who I have to thank for dropping The Lonesome Crowded West on me when I was 18 and thus created the saddest lil' fanboy of the 1990's. He now makes his home in the L.A. and thankfully hasn't kept all of his secrets to himself. .. joey chernila, in his infinite wisdom, asked me to write [...]

Alright, first off, he ain't heavy. Boo Radley is skinny as a muhfucker. Second off, my good friend here has released a remix for the old Radiohead "Nude" remixo contest, and let me tell you: it is a worthy thing. You want to vote for this track? Do That. You want to have this track? You could have that. Radiohead - Nude (Boo Radley Original Rap Remix) aaaaaaaaand... here that myspace: nuh!

Unabashed biters. I've always favored them. From Vanilla Ice to Nick Lowe to Jens Lekman, they see this big burger of melodies from the past and they just take that chomp. They do it from love and admiration: Lowe is quoted in the liner notes for his recently re-issued "Jesus Of Cool" as saying "I felt...'I'm a fan, I'll write songs about pop music.' I thought I would comment on it, steal a bit here and there and if anyone pulls me up, I'll say 'sure...' It was a sort of forerunner to sampling." On "Volume [...]

Who could refuse this man? Utopia - Everybody Else Is Wrong
Here's old pic of Howard and his two little brothers. Howard Tate - Ain't Nobody Home Look. I wish there were an easier, cheaper way to get your hands on the incredible Get It While You Can , but for now, you can listen to this song or look for the pretty good Rediscovered from 2003, which features songwriting from Elvis Costello and original cohort Jerry Ragavoy and was done in the style of Solomon Burke's Don't Give Up On Me .

Man, Sam Cooke is the greatest. Peter Guralnick wrote a great chapter on him in his 1986 book "Sweet Soul Music," and that piece of writing continues to inspire. If there is time enough, I'll post again about the great versatility, charisma and business-sense that made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century, but for now, how 'bout a song? As far as I know, Cooke only recorded a couple of duets with Lou Rawls: the great "Bring It On Home To Me," and the equally powerful "That's Where It's At." The [...]

People have cast insult after insult at me for liking the following two bands. But in this age of apology, where Al Jarreau gets a week to himself, I'll go ahead and give it one more shot. Here are a couple of tunes-both using the guitar theme from the Beatles' "Getting Better," I might add-that are just too great to be lacquered over by the shame of enjoying them. The first is from Utopia's awesome amazing "Deface The Music" from 1980. At some point I'll have to do a full post on this album, which I [...]

This is a cowboy band. Yup. There is certainly a western flick/fire and brimstone vibe to their tunes (esp. "Mykonos"). Like some dark judgment awaits this band of outlaws out on the plain. And hey, I'm all for it! Kinda reminiscent of the Sand Rubies , an AZ band from the 90's. Fleet Foxes - Oliver James

With a voice somewhere between Otis Redding's honest crackle and Percy Sledge's C+W twang sits James Carr, Goldwax Records' Next Big Thing in the late 1960's. Here are a couple of tunes from Razor & Tie's out of print The Essential James Carr , an excellent collection from 1995. "I Gotta Go" wasn't released until long after it was recorded and I guess I understand why. It seems more like a sketch than a single, ending with an abrupt fadeout. That said, all the other basic ingredients for an outstanding track are present, including a bit more [...]
