If you didn't see it I listed Yellow Ostrich's The Mistress as my favorite album of 2011. We've now learned that on March 3rd they will release their second album. This first album from Yellow Ostrich was basically a solo album from the band's lead singer Alex Schaaf. After a huge response from this album, Alex enlisted the help of a full band, including the drummer from We Are Scientists, Michael Tapper and Jon Natchez from Beirut. We only have a taste of what the new sound will be with a full band with the inbetween [...]
I wasn't expecting my first favorite album of 2012 to be anything like Gotye's Making Mirrors. I've been so enamored with synthesize rs and people making music like nothing I'd ever heard before. And Gotye is none of those things. Gotye doesn't fall victim to the latest trendy trappings of what is "hot" in music these days. Instead, he relies on a wide range of musical styles that will remind you of Peter Gabriel at times (In Your Light) and Yeasayer (State of the Art) in others. But above all Gotye does what every important album does - he makes incredibly catchy and well crafted [...]

Wow, this is the fourth year we have put together a list of Indie Christmas songs. Once again, we got the amazing Bregan Ford (aka Hubbard) to make a nice cover for the occasion. I almost didn't make a list this year as there was a serious lack of appropriate material, but in the end, I put my headphones on and searched the Internet for 40 hours. And if these aren't enough for you, you can always check our lists from years previous: Indie Christmas Songs 2010 , Indie Christmas Songs 2009 , and Indie [...]
M83 - Hurry Up We're Dreaming October 18th on Mute, selected by Train Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is hands down my favorite album of 2011. From the minute it was announced I was playing a game of Hurry Up And Release This Album, We're Waiting (see what I did there?), and once I got it in my hands and on the hard drive I was not disappointed. Majestic in scope and ambitious in sound, Hurry Up is an [...]

Usually when you think of steel drums you think of feet in the sand, heart in the islands, a cold sugary pink drink or some old rasta man trying to sell you some local ganja.... Let's swap all that out for some neon wayfarers, dirty kicks and cigarette stained hands. Yep - I just want to point out the awesomeness of Steel Drums in some hipster indie tracks that I've serendipitously stumbled upon lately! Jamie XX - Far Nearer This hippy-hoppy beat makin bunny is still one of my top favs [...]

Things seem to be happening all of a sudden for White Arrows , the up and coming Los Angeles band. Yup! Why are you gonna love it? It's infectious, try not to. Hand claps are and will always&forever be fun and if you know much about the authors of the muffin, you know we are likely to happily lose our minds in the swirly and synthy bounce of modern music. The sound that White Arrows has comfortably nailed with this latest release serves to further justify my love affair with a drum machine [...]
One of the most interesting and powerful albums to come out in 2011 is the UK band Everything Everything 's Man Alive . The instrumentation mixes rock with electronic and catchy guitar riffs with Broadway musical song structures. The singer sounds like he is constantly passing between different dimensions, trying to get the words out before the world collapses around him, with backing harmonies that would make Queen jealous. The lyrics are mysterious and follow a strange, yet alluring dystopia. The album begins with a song described by the band as their take on a 90s [...]

The wonderful folks over at Filter Magazine have given us a pair of tickets to the Hollywood Bowl this Sunday! Before I tell you any more I must say that I'll be picking a random entrant tomorrow morning and you have to pick up the hard tickets around Santa Monica Blvd. and Gower here in Los Angeles either Thursday or Friday from the Filter offices. To enter simply comment to this article and say that you want the tickets and are willing to pick them up. Make sure you leave a valid email address [...]

D Rock is an occasional writer for the Audio Muffin and also happens to be from Albuquerque, New Mexico. You know what else is in Albuquerque? Burglars. Van burglars to be specific. I know this because the two founders of MJMJ Records had their van robbed in MFing 'Burque (that's what the locals call it). The van they were living in at the time (is the rumor). And if your powers of perception are strong you have figured out that MJMJ isn't one of the major labels, and apparently this theft was a pretty crushing blow. Andy, from the [...]
When Bon Iver 's album leaked on the Internet a few weeks ago I stopped everything until I had it playing on my speakers. I found it pleasant, good, mellow; any handful of adjectives that seemed to suggest I hadn't really got it, I hadn't really let it soak in. Being a huge fan of music I had a stack of music on my plate and it was on to the next one. However, I recently took a trip to Austin, TX and it was on the plane ride back to Los Angeles that I decided to [...]
During Architecture in Helsinki's performance at The Music Box, a remarkable thing occurred: the People of Los Angeles Danced. Yes, the very people we so often see scoffing and snickering, watching and whispering as Artists perform. We cerebral, entitled kids, gave ourselves up to a collective motion, eruptions of joy, and ebullient wonder. Several groups of young men, who appeared to be surfers or fraternity members, were dancing and screaming requests for old songs. The Soulbillies (new Beats) were dancing alongside the Bros. A woman with a broken leg carted herself on some strange, one-legged wheelchair to dance with [...]

You may have noticed we have had the same ad banner on our site for a couple months (or if recent surveys are correct, you haven't noticed ad banners since 2007). GroopEase is basically the Groupon or Living Social for independent music. And within the next week and half, they are going to be sending a pair of folks to Bonnaroo. But before we get to the giveaway, I must tell you why GroopEase is rad. First, believe it or not, the Audio Muffin does not really make any money. Yeah sure, we get free tickets and album promos, but [...]

Namaste Muffins. I'm back in the bakery with some more local soundwaves for your digital jukeboxes. Today's purveyors of jam sandwiches are Brooklyn nu-wavester's Swingset Committee , c hampions of sound that they so aptly describe themselves as "dance. dance. dance." And dance you will my Muffin friends as Swingset's synths and electro-energy bebop into your ear drum like nobody's business. So while you're lacing up your finest dancing shoes, let's find out who we're getting our groove on to... Swingset Committe began as Andrew Belinsky and David Dahlquist, a pair of electro enthusiasts who [...]

Namaste Muffins. Brooklyn's Ace Reporter is no stranger to the Bakery - last summer I did a series of photo-song mashups with him, and this year we covered the series of EPs Ace released from his herculean threesixfive project . The reason we're here today talking Ace is because of a rad new video he released that I wanted to share with you all - read on... Last Friday, a kickass video crew from Love Drunk Studios and HearNebraska.org rolled into [...]

How many of you are familiar with the DDP? I'm not talking about the wrestler Diamond Dallas Page, a legend in his own right (is he? I just made that up), but the always fun Desk Dance Party. This is when you're at work jamming away in your own little discotheque for the day, be it your cubicle or your desk, and the foot tapping and rhythmic pen taps take over - we've all been there before. The reason I bring it up is because Friendly Fires are pretty much instant DDP fodder [...]

After a little hiatus your boy Train is back! And what better way to come back than to come bearing gifts? And not just any gifts, but gifts of the Glasvegas variety! You may remember that waaaaaaaaay back in the day Sydney C posted about Glasvegas - this is before I even wrote for the Muffin, but I did get a name check in that post...you were probably all wondering who this Train fellow was. Or maybe you weren't. I don't know I'm not a mind reader. Or am I?? But [...]

I haven't been doing a very good job of finding new music lately. And I am going to completely blame that on the new Fleet Foxes album. Honestly, all of my free music listening time has been consumed by Hopelessness Blues. Okay, I've listened to the new Antlers a couple times on NPR . I've heard some mixed reviews from my friends on the new Fleet Foxes. But I think this has more to do with how many times they've listened to the album. This is definitely an album that grows on you, this is [...]
If you happen to live in Los Angeles, Barbara is playing their first show in Santa Monica tonight. They are playing at a little club called Central S.A.P.C (which used to be 14 Below) . They will be going on a little after midnight, but you should get there earlier than that as Chasing Kings will also be playing some awesome tunes. The cover is $10 and they'd like it if you said you were there for Barbara. I also heard that they will only be playing new songs from their upcoming album. If you [...]
Take a moment and let your mind wrap itself around the concept of a black light dinner party. What is served? Is it all white rice or does someone inject some sushi with neon die and hope its non-toxic? At what point does everyone become depressed that their shoe laces glow but their teeth don't? There isn't a whole lot of information about Black Light Dinner Party - only that it consists of four producers who have been working together for two years. And yet we only have one public song from the group. Can't say I'm very [...]
