I've been in blog hibernation the last couple weeks (I'll use the excuse that I've been working on year-end lists) but I've been snapped out by Chromatics' gorgeous cover of New Order's "Ceremony", from Johnny Jewel's Black & White mix . Chromatics and New Order are a perfect match given both band's affection for dreamy synth-pop with big hooks, and the Portland trio definitely does the iconic track justice, replacing the original's throbbing bassline and driving drumbeat with sweeping synths and minimal percussion, putting the focus on Ruth's ethereal vocals and that iconic guitar line. I've always appreciated New Order as a groundbreaking dance-pop band and one of the most consistent hit-makers of the 19802s, but in the last five years my love for them has increased dramatically. I now count them among my very favorite bands of all time, so having the chance to see them live (even sans one of it's founding members, bassist Peter Hook) was an absolute thrill especially since they rarely tour the US (the last time was seven years ago). This year marked the 8th year that Pygmalion Music Festival has taken over Champaign / Urbana, IL, turning it into the epicenter for top-notch indie music for one weekend of the year. After Grizzly Bear's new album drops tomorrow, perhaps the most anticipated release of the year (at least round here) is Bat for Lashes third album, The Haunted Man . We've already heard the amazing "Laura" and now Natasha Khan has released another wonderful track which also takes its title from a girls first name and reflects on fame and stardom, "Marilyn". It's less somber tune then the lamentful, piano-led "Laura", but no less emotionally charged with immense drums and bursting synths providing a vast canvas for Khan's soaring, dramatic vocals.
