Jamie XX last blew our minds back in February when he teamed up with Gil Scott-Heron. He's been busy since then putting out an Essential Mix with BBC's Radio 1 (posted below) and dropping one of the best mixes I've heard in a while for FACT magazine. It's 32 minutes of awesome that fits into pretty much anything I do in my daily routine so I highly suggest you fit it into yours. Jamie XX starts off this mix with crazy ominous bass that probably scares my neighbor and progressively picks up until he starts getting dirty with [...]

I'm glad there are people other than me who appreciate the good vibes of "1 Thing" by Amerie. Octo Octa liked it enough to sample it. So did Q-Tip . Download: Octo Octa - I'm Trying via altered zones

Filed under rappers who don't look like rappers. Lushlife raps like he's Inspectah Deck's scrappy younger brother, but looks like a severe breed of hipster that would shock and confuse your dad the first time he dropped you off at NYU. On "The Romance of the Telescope," Lushlife ignores the obvious route of his tie-dye, vegan beat (a dreamy sample of British synthpop group OMD) and raps about worldly things like dice games and basketball teams. "Cinder block rap," he calls it. But listen closely and you'll catch some deep musings in there, Instagram caption type shit. [...]

Producer that he is, Terrace Martin usually leaves the rapping to his more talented guests, but he reveals some thus far unheard skills on "Crenshaw Motel." The simple beat by the often forgettable 9th Wonder sounds great in the hands of capable rappers with a layer of live instrumentation flourishes. I love when songs seamlessly take the form of a conversation. Terrace Martin and Ill Camille (who flows even better than he does) make plans for a night out in Compton and of course, Terrace's sax makes an appearance. Mr. Peace may have finally found his Chi. Ronald William Artest, Jr. is no more. As you may have heard by now, the man, the legend, the former malcontent who has worn a half dozen numbers , has now OFFICIALLY changed his name to Metta World Peace . Do you realize what this means?!? We may never see the nickname "Tru Warrier" shaved into the cranium of this QB baller. This puts Art—err… Peace on the short list of athletes with absolutely redonkulous name changes. The other [...]
LOLOLOL, what other platinum selling rapper hops out of a trunk to start his performance, and then goes on airlift? Only this guy nicknamed Ye. Below, There are even more LOLs to be had at Kanye forcing a re-do during the opening of All Of The Lights when the (majority white) crowd didn't call and respond to the "MJ Gone.." line loud enough. A Rest In Peace shout-out to Black Eyed Peas was totally normal, too. From the reviews ACL sounded like a swell job to wrap up the tour supporting My [...]

I never seen [2Pac] eat a vegetable, not once in the five years I knew him. That's how I knew he wasn't planning on living too long. - Shock G

"Green Grass, Blue Sky" will appear on the upcoming Instrument of Emotion EP . Co$$ is sounding mad emo with his titles right now, but no matter. Shit's dope. Download: Co$$ - Green Grass, Blue Sky via Co$$

This is my reward for following James Zoo on SoundCloud after I listened to his awesome mix with Paul White in April. Named for a Hermeto Pascoal LP, "Slaves Mass" is a nigh unclassifiable almighty banger. James told me that it will appear on a forthcoming EP. Beats, son.

The sole takeaway from G Mane's new mixtape is this neo noir account of a night of debauchery. Download AllNiteSmokeSession in its entirety below. I was a little out of line when I proclaimed " ODB > LL Cool J by a hundred thousand trillion. " My bad. But here's the story behind this long lost gem: Back in 1994 K-Def was working on some beats out of the B Room in Marly Marl's House Of Hits when LL Cool J walked in on his session and said "let's make some tracks together". Uncle L had always wanted to rhyme on a track using the famous ESG breakbeat 'UFO', so he had Def lay it down with some scratches and [...]

Huge and achingly sad. The solitary drum is what really takes it to another place. Irish duo Solar Bears posted a download link in the comments of their SoundCloud page.

The senator in Virginia for years was Chuck Robb. My wife and I supported him, and got invited to his Christmas party in the late '90s, when [2Pac's] Greatest Hits came out. My wife decided we should listen to it on the drive. We get to Robb's house, and there were a bunch of black parking attendants. We opened the car, and - I didn't know this - but the next song to come on was ["Hit Em Up"]. The timing was hilarious. Right when the brothers were ready to take the keys the line "I fucked your [...]
Back to back Brown Bag AllStars. "Nothing" appears on Beautiful Hip Hop Volume Five which you can stream/download here . via Hip Hop Isn't Dead

Resolution is full of aimless visceral violence; writes Khan on his Bandcamp page, "No main topic, just blood on the dance floor, and perhaps every other floor." Khan raps with the baritone of an old soul man and yet he's red-bearded, bespectacled white guy. Producer marink adheres to dramatic, noirish samples while "Lord Khan Almighty" and "Anne Hathaway" are high points with their soulful sung hooks. It's extremely polished for a stray underground rap EP and hopefully a sign of more incoming dopeness. Resolution by Soul Khan

Homeboy Sandman appearances are a great treat when he has room to just rap his ass off. Such is the case on "Rebel Nation," which appears on Jah C & Jaison Spain's Conception . Boy Sand raps in double time dropping nerdy gems like "I'm on the cover of Forbes in the fourth dimension." And I would be remiss not to mention his show-stealer on Rapping with Paul White . He tells a fish out of water story about traveling to England over what sounds like a Dr. Dre beat performed on [...]

It's time again for my new favorite day of the year. No, it's not my birthday (I've already turned 21... so what is there to look forward to?) and it's definitely not Christmas.... but it IS Virgin Mobile FreeFest! Never mind that corny introduction and focus on that festival title... FREE . I love free things, especially when it's a day jam packed with some of my favorite artists. If you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about, just keep reading, I promise I'll persuade you to join me in the rain this upcoming Saturday, September 10, 2011. [...]

Exile's greatest strength is quaint, jittery loops set to the ruminations a talented niche of local rappers, but he takes a few excellent detours on his new mixtape, a collection of new and old tracks. The unexpected Bun B feature is one such excursion, a helping of syrupy, buzzing funk and "Mic Jackson" by Dag Savage (a collab rapper Johaz) is huger and more anthemic than usual for Ex. There are reliable appearances by Fashawn, Co$$ and of course Blu. The sooner that Blu realizes that his most memorable work is with Exile (and vice versa), the better. Intro [...]

OK, this is [Young Jeezy's and my] daily routine: Smoke weed on the way to the city we're driving to. Get to the city. Get chased by groupies tryin' to flag us down and find the hotel. Do radio. Eat. Get a haircut. Smoke some more weed-well, we smoke weed while we're doin' all of this, anyway. Get dressed for the show. I do my show, he does his. Then we do the afterparty or go to a strip club. Then we pour champagne on bitches. - Freddie Gibbs
