We're dining at house music's top table here, released in 1988 ' Night Moves ' was mixed by the legendary Steve 'Silk' Hurley - that's Mr. Jack Your Body kids. So this really is an apple pie moment, pure perfection. Rickster - Night Moves (Night House mix)

'Wax the Van' was written by the late great Arthur Russell , but this is the 1987 edit by Mr.Ego himself, Junior Vasquez . It's especially good for both their input. Put it on and repeat, repeat, repeat. Lola – Wax The Van (Junior's Awesome Edit)

Rammellzee is the real deal; musician and all-round artistic visionary. This 12" single released in the same year as the 2 Much single below, 1988, is testament to his talent and the pioneering edge to hip-hop at the time. Gettovetts feat Rammellzee - Gangster Lean

We don't post much hip-hop nowadays, but this track was on my mind and deserves a post for the Grace Jones sample, the lazy (lazy meaning good) delivery and the er... climax. 2 Much - Wild Thang

English alternative band Sad Lovers and Giants hail from the glamour of Watford, maybe that might explain the slant of this 1981 track 'Things We Never Did', taken from the LP ' Epic Garden Music '. Sad Lovers and Giants - Things We Never Did

Amon Düül II are a German rock band that was born out of the radical West German commune scene of the sixties. Responsible for laying the foundations of the Krautrock scene, the track 'No Sushi For Camels' is taken from the reissue of their twelfth album ' Only Human ' originally released in 1979, all the tracks of which are as wonderfully genre bending as this. Here's an old favourite of mine, the man the myth, DJ Harvey providing an Essential Mix back in 1998. It's a good few years old, but there's no stagnant filler rather two hours that prove the man's worth in full. Pull back the sofa and tear it up. DJ Harvey - Essential Mix (31.05.98) Billy Cobham - "Storm" (Atlantic) Vangelis - "Let It Happen" (Vertigo) Last Poets - "Mean Machine" (Douglas 7) [...]
Beat Djs - Live in Sheffield by The Beat! on Mixcloud A few years back we were asked to venture up to steel city to dj a techno loving friend's birthday party. We hastily threw together a set we thought would sound great played on a massive pa in a sweaty club under the cinema and here it is. No idea why the mp3 has taken this long to surface but it gives a good impression [...]

Theme, we're on a theme... after the Back to Basics mix, a club of unprecedented importance in my life, here's another pinnacle of North of England club history - Hard Times . From it's origins in Mirfield (opening in 1993) it existed in a number of places in and around Yorkshire, pulling in many of the more refined US DJs, but the highlight for me were original residents Miles Hollway and Elliot Eastwick (along with Jason Boardman and Nigel Lee). Here's a two part mix from 1996 full of that premium house sound. [...]

This slab of pumped up percussive house comes from the year 1996 . There he goes that Harvey fella, getting us all excited, working us into a frenzy like only he can - lovely! Extended Family - Ulysses (Harvey's crowd control mix)

Well, this looks like quite an event! Having already remixed legendary synthpop duo Blancmange, Cage & Aviary will now be supporting them at their live show at Bush Hall on 30.11.11. See flyer attached below for more info. To celebrate this Cage and Aviary are giving away a free dub of Blancmange - The Western (Cage & Aviary's Nothing Is Dub), they've even offered a wav, if any aspiring djs want it? You can email them at info@twhe.co.uk to get one. Keep an eye out for their 'Nothing Is' parties as well. [...]

After Carl Craig's recent Boiler Room set that saw him utilise a toolkit comparable to the Nasa flight-desk we're reinvigorated by the man's talent (not that our love ever really waned) here's his Essential Mix from earlier in the year. It's sad that some Boiler Room blog commenters were disappointed with the set, maybe they'd of been happier with a grime MC toasting over the top? For me it was a great showpiece and the only reason it's not up here is that we've been jacking Boiler Room too much of late. This Essential Mix is equally worthy [...]

As well as the usual electronic disco fayre served up on this blog we also enjoy a sunday breakfast of smack-laced shoegaze indie fuzz. This week's culinary delight comes courtesy of new Domino signings Trailer Trash Tracys who drop this single before heading out on tour with The Vaccines. Available as a double A-side from January 9th. Trailer Trash Tracys - Candy Girl by Double Six

By now you'll all be dancing to Holy Ghost's reinterpretation of this Ministry classic but here's a slight twist on the original for you more savvy disco goers. Ministry - I Wanted To Tell Her (Rango's 'Lovers Touch' Edit) by Rango Jones

Chicago house is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment with sites like Class of 808 and Legendary Children supplying all the squelch you could possibly desire. Faced with this tsunami of acid it's nice to hear an alternative take on the genre. Nothing too radical but this mix, as part of the Anthology of American Acid , takes a DJ Screw inspired approach slowing the tracks to a grinding pace and chopping and screwing them together. It really works and helps add a refreshing new angle to a [...]

This is a bit of a no brainer, it had to be posted up here, Back to Basics was an education for this particular Beat member and it's still getting involved 20 years on. The club has never deviated from it's music policy, that's some feet for two decades of countless trends and low ebbs in dance music . Ralph Lawson specifically has gone on to make 20:20 Vision one of the most pioneering electronic music labels out there - to think he was there for day one, this is what the [...]

Picked this up courtesy of Mr Andy Blake on The Thing Facebook Group . It's fairly standard Cowley disco fayre until about two minutes in at which point it just goes interstellar! Two Tons O' Fun - I Got The Feeling (Patrick Cowley Mix)

Tasty house nugget by Leo Zero re-mastered for a forthcoming Leo Trax album of more horizontal flavoured house. Free download for a limited time so act quick people. Leo Zero 'Marks And Sparks' by Leo Zero

Ahead of their Warm takeover this Saturday , Optimo have seen fit to drop the latest edition of their podcast but, instead of reaching to the future, this one takes us back deep into 1991 with two live mixes from JD Twitch recently revived from C90. 20 years on from their recording JD Twitch takes up the story: 20 years later... In recent times there has been a lot of looking back to the early 1990s in house music which made me curious about what my dj sets actually sounded like back [...]
Tom Dicicco - 'Untitled' by BOILER ROOM Apologies if we seem to e fawning over Boiler Room these days (btw, Carl Craig is on NOW!) but this is a killer slab of Berghain techno we picked up off their site. Huge.
