Uninspired. Music, lately, has been completely uninspiring for me. Something I never thought would ever, ever, occur for such an extended period of time as this one. Thus, resulting in my inadequate posting as of late. That and the fact that perhaps my inspiration has greatly shifted from music to literature? I have been devouring countless books in the past 3 months. On average, about 3 or 4 per week. Thank the lord for cheap Montreal used book stores. Thank the lord for the man who works at The Word and finds the numerous books being added to my 'must [...]
Caytee Lush is a friend of mine who won me over the first time I heard her pick up a little half sized guitar at 2 a.m during a party at ("The Experimental Love Collectives") house. I remember my very first initial (semi-intoxicated) thought was "KIMYA DAWSON!" (clever, witty, lyrics, etc.), but I have now come to realize Caytee's talent is much more dynamic than Dawson's (and I must say, I consider myself to be quite a fan of the Moldy Peaches). Since then she's played quite a few solo acoustic sets in cafes/pubs around Montreal, where you are able [...]
There was a stage in my life where I would spend hours upon hours on myspace.com going from one bands page to the next. It was doing this a few years ago that led to the discovery of Jenny Owen Youngs, the Age Of Rockets, Gregory and the Hawk, etc. One of my greatest 'finds' has been Thom Stone, who three or four years ago had only about 100 playcounts on the song that won me over, "She Knows" (one of the greatest summer songs to ever exist), and played a few shows in some pubs in Manchester, UK. A [...]

photo The final day of Folk Fest is also the day I start looking forward to the following years. Alley and I start placing bets on who's going to show up 'next year', from obvious local bands to... 'IMAGINE if SUFJAN came?!'. I think I feel the MOST infinite those four days of the year. This one festival (and my mothers home made sangria) brings together everyone I care about most in this whole entire world. This all sounds cheesy, I know, but honestly! Anyways, I'm writing all this due to the fact that [...]

<-> The Acorn - Crooked Legs *Ottawa's, The Acorn are coming to Calgary for our annual Folk Festival from July 23-26, please make an effort to come* *note: this weeks leak of the week: Bell Orchestre ----> YIPEE*

I rarely write negative reviews. Instead I discard the album from my memory as quickly as possible. Even the act of THINKING about unfortunate music releases for too long exhausts me. Drains all positive areas of the brain and replaces those little capsules of light with "....UGH!". This affect is completely and incredibly magnified when the anticipated release of an album occupies my thoughts for MONTHS. I start to formulate the storyline in my dreams: mysterious start, intrigue, intrigue, a few twists, CRESCENDO, INCREDIBLE, INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE FINISH TO AN INCREDIBLE ALBUM. and so, I will keep this short, [...]

Good god, again, I'm sorry for the lack of updates. I wish one of my classes was devoted to "blog updating", because so much has been going on in the world of music lately, I just need to sit down and get it all out on here. Firstly, though, I have to devote a little space to the most wonderful birthday present I received (because it directly ties into the naming of this blog) from my incredible friend (and TAALK member) Alley Lind-Kenny, a painting by "Jo", whose work was being displayed in one of Montreal's wonderful cafes; Le [...]

On a much brighter note, Metric has released a few more exciting sneak-peaks, including the official name of the new album Fantasies (I can't tell if thats funny or ironic or what, I mean it is quite different from previously titled albums like Grow Up and Blow Away and Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? ), and a few live performances of some unreleased songs as well as an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING acoustic version of the song "Gimme Sympathy" and you can watch the beautifully serene video of it HEREHEREHEREHERE (WATCH IT [...]

Last night I watched Akira for the very first time; this morning I finished reading the essay by Thomas Lamarre titled Born of Trauma: Akira and Capitalist Modes of Destruction. This evening I watched the new Death Cab video of "Grapevine Fires" and couldnt help but make a comparison between the atomic/psychic bomb theme of destruction or the idea of nuclear apocalypse within the popular Japanese Manga, and the atrocities of the depressed american heart within this video. God Damn, Ben.

Dearest Emily, I can't take this any longer. It's been years since our last encounter. Was it with Death From Above? Was that the last time? Or was it the time you kicked over the keyboard? Or the time your energy short circuited the power output? Please hurry, I need this album and another performance to quench my incredible thirst. -withindianlove Metric - Help I'm Alive Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton - Crowd Surf Off A Cliff

I'm sure we have all been incredibly anxious to hear the musical creations coming out of the house in rural texas where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been cooped up in for the past while, mixing together their upcoming album which is due to be released on April 14th. There hadn't been much talk going on about the album until the LP title "It's Blitz" got announced on stereogum a few weeks ago. Hype is coming full stream now that the first single "Zero" has been released early this morning. Synthesizers have replaced the classic distorted guitar riffs [...]

Man, its such a nice feeling when I only JUST discover music that has been around for a long time, it gives me this surge of realization that there is still a ton of incredible music out there waiting for me to discover. Anyway, many of you may already know of Eef Barzelay, and if so, it would of been AWESOME if you had told me about him a few YEARS ago, but, you know what, its okay. Anyway, I do know Clem Snide, and Eef Barzelay is in fact the lead singer and main creative drive of the band [...]

I woke up this morning to one of the most exciting, unexpected surprises: a TWO SUNS preview! I could not sit STILL in my 8 a.m class this morning just thinking about the intrigue and inspiration which was sitting in the form of 104 yet listened to mega bites of the second Bat for Lashes LP Two Suns. Natasha Khan left absolutely everyone dying for more of her haunting vocals and interesting instrument choices after her first LP release of Fur and Gold. Thanks to Benny, who was lucky enough to be living [...]

photo "It's like when you put instant rice pudding mix in a bowl in the microwave and push the button, and you take the cover off when it rings, and there you've got rice pudding. I mean, what happens in between the time when you push the switch and when the microwave rings? You can't tell what's going on under the cover. Maybe the instant rice pudding first turns into macaroni gratin in the darkness when nobody's looking and only then turns back into rice pudding. We think it's only natural to get rice pudding after [...]
I cannot get ENOUGH of Florence and the Machine, everything they do is just completely awesome and completely refreshing. Although the wait and anticipation for an LP is almost deadly, they've kept me quite intrigued with the numerous (and sometimes slightly humorous) covers being put out (including Mystery Jets, Kelly Clarkson and even Beirut), and the minuscule amount of songs put out on the Kiss With A Fist and Dog Days Are Over . Its artists like this that would be the one and only source of motivation for a venture down to the UK. I'm super [...]

Hello everyone! A lack of inspiration has been the direct cause of the lack of recent updates again, I'm sorry. I am getting verrrry verrrrry anxious for the February 16th release of Dark Was The Night , the Red Hot Charity album produced by The Nationals Aaron and Bryce Dessner. I know most of you have heard probably bits and pieces of conversation floating around about the album and the surrounding anticipation, BUT, none the less, if you haven't: I've gotten a sneak peak of the songs, and LET ME TELL YOU, you should be excited as [...]
hmmmm, covering the most blogged songs, sure will get some attention: Ruby Isle - Skinny Love (Bon Iver Cover) Ruby Isle - White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes Cover) What does everyone think?
