NEWSFLASH: Which Los Angeles noise punk Smell staple is breaking up?

NEWSFLASH: Which Los Angeles noise punk Smell staple is breaking up? Word just came through this morning that one of LA's famed punk groups who got their start at the Smell (go figure) is calling it quits - and soon. While the LA musical underground seems to has lost considerable momentum during the past several months - recall the drug-induced break-up of the Mae Shi, the lack of blogosphere staples spraying hipster jizz all over Los Angeles' hotbed of newer bands and the oversaturation of the scene within the scene itself - this band in particular still managed to maintain a buzzworthy decorum, despite releasing [...]

Why the 80s are Awesomely Weird: Reason #43

Space Age Love Song
A Flock of Seagulls have faced their fair-share of teasing from the 'probably a dead animal' atrocity that is lead singer Mike Score's hairdo. This post does not concern such hair follicle faux pas . (Well, let me just get it out of my system here as I admire his lovely reverse mullet. Wonder why that never caught on...) Forgetting the hair horns and pre-emo bangs, some fail to remember that the band did write some catchy tunes and did make some awesome videos where the camera was clearly visible [...]

I Love Grunge, I Love Grunge: The Most Bizarre Sonic Youth Video You'll Ever See

Grunge Pedal
Shot and directed by David Markey in 1993, "Grunge Pedal" watches Sonic Youth members Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, Gordon's Free Kitten collaborator Julie Cafritz and former Pavement bassist (and current SY touring member) Mark Ibold testing out a new 'grunge' effect pedal. The insanity and irreverence of the video really speaks for itself; go to 0:41 to see what I'm talking about.

Pixies to Kick off US Doolittle Tour With THREE (?) LA Shows

Pixies to Kick off US Doolittle Tour With THREE (?) LA Shows As if the initial news was not fantastic enough, it seems that legendary alt-rockers the Pixies might give Los Angeles fans a bit more than they bargained for this November when the band kicks off the US leg of their Do oli ttle tour. Intended to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking album that produced standard Pixies tracks such as "Here Comes Your Man" and "I Bleed," the tour was to initially begin in Los Angeles before quickly jaunting off [...]

SHAMELESS PLUG: LA's Another Ghost

Thought I'd throw out a little harmless plug for the up-and-coming Los Angeles band Another Ghost . (Yes, they're my friends, but nothing's wrong with a little nepotism every now and then. Besides, if we're going to talk about nepotism in the LA music scene, it's fair to say it runs pretty rampant around a particularly famous downtown hole-in-the-wall club...) But enough gossip-Another Ghost prides itself on being a quasi-danceable hybridization of art rock, post-punk, and new wave. (Not a bad crop of genres to aspire to.) For a limited time, the band is [...]

Paul T. Reveals Coachella Secrets

Paul T. Reveals Coachella Secrets Nothing particularly shocking or indicative of a major add here, but King Coachella, Paul Tollett (surprisingly pronounced "Tow-ley"), appeared on KCRW this morning to talk all things related to his now-legendary Southern California music festival . A download of the interview is available here for a limited time. The Southern California promoter slipped out some scheduling plans for the upcoming festival, set to take place the second week of April. Among the revelations, Tollett noted that Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen will perform at the Outdoor Theatre at sunset, [...]

Beck, You Can't Fool Me

Beck, You Can't Fool Me Earlier this week, tickets went on sale for a previously unannounced Beck performance at Los Angeles' Echo. The indie rock godfather reportedly plans on using the now sold-out show as a warm-up for his upcoming Japanese tour. Beck's mini show claims all proceeds will benefit Educating Children International-a seemingly notable cause from first glance. But, upon close examination of the concert's promotional material, things seem a bit...well, sketchy. Why? Well, it seems there is no "Educating Children International." Any search engine crawl of the supposed organization only brings up pages referencing the Beck show, [...]

Leonard Cohen Really Loves Us

Leonard Cohen Really Loves Us ...or else he wouldn't be scheduling so many US tour dates! But seriously-the famed Canadian singer-songwriter already stunned music fans everywhere when he appeared on this year's Coachella lineup and played a show at the Beacon in New York City last night . Now, it seems that Mr. Cohen is determined to give his fans across the states a heart attack by announcing an extensive slew of spring tour dates earlier today. Why such a fuss? Well, considering, until last night, Cohen had purposefully avoiding playing live shows in the States [...]

Fever Ray Announces N. American Tour

Fever Ray Announces N. American Tour Fever Ray , the inspired solo project of The Knife 's Karin Dreijer Andersson, announced a handful of North American tour dates in support of her self-titled debut album , slated for physical release on March 23rd. Not surprisingly, the tour features only four stops on the continent; The Knife's sole world tour made only three US stops back in 2006. Andreas Nilsson , who arranged the near-legendary visuals for the Knife's tour-those interested can see the magic documented on the band's Silent Shout tour DVD as a [...]

PARTIAL COACHELLA LINEUP

With the lineup set to be released today, the LA Times leaked some big names playing the 2009 festival here . Among the performers are Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, and My Bloody Valentine. I'm about to go to bed, but OH MY GOD.

Animal Collective Announces Summer Tour

Animal Collective Announces Summer Tour Hot off the heels of touring in support of Merriweather Post Pavilion through the end of March, Animal Collective will return to the stage in mid-May for a North American tour. Gaps in the touring schedule seem to hint towards an appearance at the Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington. Fans who missed the experimental pop outlet on their three-city American jaunt finishing up this week can catch the band as they pay visit to nearly every major city-as well as a stop in Big Sur to play a show in the forest. [...]

My Radio Listening Days Are Over

My Radio Listening Days Are Over On the occasional off-chance that I turn off my car's CD player-or when my CD player wouldn't work-to browse through the slew of uninspired Los Angeles radio stations, my tuner is set to either one of two stations: KCRW or Indie 103.1. Unfortunately, it seems my radio-listening choices are now forced down to one singular station. This morning, Indie 103.1, a station famous for playing for contemporary independent music as well as older indie and punk staples, announced it will no longer broadcast via radio effective immediately. [...]

Animal Collective Ratatat Remix Finally Surfaces!

After Pitchfork first dropped the news back in May , the blogosphere buzzed with news of an Animal Collective remix of Ratatat's "Mirando" off of the underwhelming LP3 . While the Collective also released a remix of a Goldfrapp track , the Ratatat reworking never leaked onto the internet. Leave it to the fans on Animal Collective's message board, Collected Animals , to do the searching. After finding the track on a Japanese import of LP3 , several Collective fans ordered the album, and today the track finally [...]

First Animal Collective Summer Tour Date Leak

First Animal Collective Summer Tour Date Leak Looks like Animal Collective will be upgrading its Los Angeles digs this coming May. In five short months, the band will leap from playing notably smaller LA venues (Music Box, Troubadour) to playing the 2300-seat Wiltern Theatre on May 29, 2009 . With this leak of a date, along with a hush-hush secret show somewhere in the California forest several days before the LA date, expect more tour summer dates to be released soon. For now, those lucky few can catch the Collective on their short jaunt through Europe [...]

Wait, No One Told Me About the Presale!

In a seemingly desperate move, scalpers of the world have already descended upon the lucrative universe of Coachella tickets-bearing in mind that no lineup has been released, nor have tickets gone on sale to the public. Scalper-haven StubHub already lists single-day and three-day passes on it's website. For an event that may find itself lacking in substantial performers, $875 for a full festival pass seems a bit much. (And that doesn't include your $1,000 VIP camping spot, assuming Goldenvoice decides to give the premium lodgings another go.) This isn't the [...]
