Archer Pressing Plant Archer Record Pressing, the plant where all the classic techno records were pressed, is part of the music's indie history. It's run by Mike Archer, the grandson of the original founder who started the place in 1965. Since the 80s, techno was a big part of their business. They pressed the old Metroplex and Transmat records, basically everything that came out of Detroit, and they continue to press techno records today.

Mastering for vinyl, for those who aren't sure about this part of the process, is when a sound engineer plays the raw uncompressed master version of a track through his audio processing equipment in order to make the recording work well and sound loud in the vinyl medium. The master lacquer is a 12″ round disc of soft material that is cut buy a diamond tip lathe creating the grooves that will play back music when a stylus and needle run through the groove. So my dilemma about distributing to Europe has left me with no other option but to do it myself - Why would I go through paying for a distributor if I'm only pressing 200 copies? Lucky for me I have kept all my packaging from previously shipped items & learned how other small record labels send theirs [turns out you can use a square piece of cardboard & some tape] So that should save me some cash on packaging when re-mailing.

One thing about pressing a 45 on a budget is that it probably costs an extra $150 for colored labels etc - I'm going for the white label look but with some DIY designs - it cost me $24 for a logo to be put on a rubber stamp.

Here I will post everything relevent to pressing my first 45 - from inspirational acts who helped me create my sound to the instruments & software I used, as well as useful facts & tips to help you press your own record. Everything is being done in true DIY fashion.

Through my collaboration with Mark Johnson on The CURIOS Show at WMWM Salem, I met and played with some amazing artists from the Boston area and beyond.
