Cold Splinters is in Boston today, hanging out with the folks from Danner and Wilderness Workshop . Come on down if you want to drink some Sierra Nevada and eat pie and donuts. And really, who wouldn't want to do that?

After a long, wet, and muddy day on a New Hampshire section of the AT this last weekend, eating Mexican-ish pumpkin soup in a dry lean-to was a great way to end the hike. Happy fall travels, y'all. 2-3 cups water 1/2 vegetable bouillon cube 1 can pumpkin (Make sure not to buy the pumpkin pie mix.) 1 small can green chiles 1 small can corn (Mexican style if you're feeling it) 1 can black beans (I'm a fan of butter beans as well) 1 small [...]

This past Saturday Nate Damm wrapped up his 7+ month walk across America, taking the ceremonious final steps into the Pacific at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Nate walked lonely roads and highways mostly alone from Delaware, pushing his gear in a jogging stroller. He kept a blog during the trip, and maintained a facebook page with some great photos, videos and anecdotes along the way. [...]

As Rocky points out , most national park employees are majorly underpaid, often using their masters degrees while working seasonally for decades before a permanent job opens. Perhaps that's the reason that Lydia L. White, age 48, of Hooper, Colorado, allegedly stole $750,000 from Great Sand Dunes National Park from March 2007 through December 2010. She is charged with 145 counts of theft of government property and 53 counts of money laundering. That one didn't make it onto The Morning Report . More info [...]

Yes, GORP, GRANOLA, and all those other trail snacks are all about personal preference and the art of worldly wisdom. (The GORP pictures above, from an old BACKPACKER , feature a recipe with Teddy Grahams. Genius.) And on the few occasions that posts about food have showed up on this rag, the conversations have turned out to be pretty darn interesting. Nerdy as hell, but pretty darn interesting nonetheless. Most of the time, as I'm sure you'll agree, trail snacks are better to make at home (when you're carving your pumpkins this season, roast the [...]

Ever wondered why moss only grows on the north side of trees? Didn't think so... **** Actually, moss doesn't only grow on the north side of trees, it just MOSTLY grows on the north side. Also, that rule only applies in the northern hemisphere-in the southern hemisphere, moss mostly grows on the south sides of trees. The reason is that in the northern hemisphere, because of the tilt of the Earth on its axis, the sun almost always appears to be a little south of directly overhead. That's why rooms [...]

Last week, after a friend sent me a link to the army cutlery set pictured above, I couldn't remember using any sort of camp utensil much this summer. I don't know if that means that there was a lack of effort on my part in making dinner, or if it was purely a realization that I just enjoy a sandwich-ish something more than a big bowl or rice and beans. I'm sure it'll change as the temperatures drop. Usually does. And I've never really enjoyed the Light My Fire thing, but I did encounter [...]

Julia Butterfly Hill is a famously eloquent environmental activist, who from December 1997 to December 1999 lived atop a 1500-year-old California Redwood tree on a tiny, handbuilt platform. More than 180 feet off the ground, Julia Butterfly spent 738 days on one of the most successful tree sits in Earth First! 's history of organized action. You can watch the 2000 documentary about Julia Butterfly's tree sit in full until September 30 over at PBS .

What can I say? I'm a sucker for these types of things. Especially that handsome Lakes Of The Clouds one. Buy them at the Appalachian Mountain Club Store
