KILLERS BEGIN DEBUTING THIRD LP This update is all about the Killers . Is it a Quick Bite then? No, the Killers are just deserving of their own Cannibal Cheerleader update. Explaining our obsession with the Killers is difficult, considering the lack of respect they seem to garnish around the blogosphere. However, we here at CC are of the opinion that Brandon Flowers and company produce some of the best, most awe-inspiring, soaring rock and roll this side of U2, without all the self-importance. The Killers have produced two albums on which we [...]

STARS POST NEW TRACK Our favorite Canadian melodic-popsters Stars are back on their game with the posting of a new track entitled "Why I Want To Save You" on their Myspace . The track contains all the formulas for success - sweeping chorus, intricate instrumentation, heartfelt and lovelorn lyrics. It's the Stars formula alright! Give it a listen below (track starts about ten seconds in so be patient blog readers!). Also, can't wait to see Stars when they roll through town for this year's ACL Festival . Woo! [...]
OCTOPUS PROJECT TO LAUNCH NATIONWIDE TOUR Our favorite local instrumental-noodlers the Octopus Project are set to launch their nationwide tour starting with Lollapalooza in just a few days. We're of course stoked to see one of our favorite local acts cause such a stir outside of Austin, so in support here's there video for "Truck" which is garnering some attention over at YouTube. Go Octopus Project and see you when you get back in time for the ACL Festival ! ****************************** ****************************** ******** FLEETING JOYS [...]

SOUTHERN DRAMA INTERVIEW Here at Cannibal Cheerleader we recently had an interview with one of our favorite local acts Southern Drama . Here's an exercpt: " Cooling off on the sun-drenched outside patio of Spiderhouse Cafe, the three women of Austin's own Southern Drama contemplate the proper way to describe their blazingly original sound. "We have been trying to figure that out for like five years," says violinist Naomi Cherie. Lead singer Clarissa Ysel chimes in, "We usually use words like 'creepy' or [...]
NEW KAREN O NATIVE KOREAN ROCK VIDEOS Our friends over at The Modern Age managed to capture some excellent videos of KO and the Native Korean Rock crew performing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman's stripped down songs of romance and desire lost at sea. Here's there show review: " The stage was set up like a kid's school production of "South Pacific", with a nautical extravaganza situated on the stage. A ship bow dead smack front and center, silver cellophane covering the [...]

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS TROT THROUGH AUSTIN According to this Pitchfork article our friend John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats fame will be swinging through Austin on November 1st at Antone's on his upcoming fall tour in support of the excellent Heretic Pride . You know that we'll be there with bells on, but until then, listen to this fantastic track and despair you're not watching him live right now. The Mountain Goats - "Lovecraft In Brooklyn"

SOUTHERN DRAMA IN AUSTIN Performing at Austin's own Beauty Bar last night, Southern Drama managed surpass all our expectations and capture a refreshing slice of retro-country rock with a subversive edge that proved both genuine and engaging. There exists a level of underlying difficulty when playing any version of country music - the danger of the tunes seeming kitsch or even worse, too poppy is ever-present. However, Southern Drama plowed through such criticisms with instrumental virtuosity, care of their brilliant violinist Naomi Cherie, and with the captivating howl of lead [...]
KAREN O REVEALS NEW SIDE-PROJECT Over the weekend our favorite art-punk frontwoman Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs revealed her involvement in a new side project called Native Korean Rock . Here's the announcement from KO from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' blog : " Native Korean Rock is a side project of mine comprised of a body of love songs written over the last two years, to be performed with a motley crew of NYC natives. Expect high drama, high stakes in two intimate performances. [...]

TILLY/BELAIRE/RINGO D'STARR ROCK EMO'S Last night at Emo's here in Austin, Texas, attendees of the earth-shattering performances of Tilly and the Wall , Belaire , and Ringo Deathstarr were witness to a brilliant becoming, as three already immensely respectable acts combined forces for an evening of sonic epiphanies, with each band blowing away expectations to an infectiously joyous crowd. The room teemed with life as if every track by every band meant the world to each person in the club, and the acts rode these vibes to the top of [...]
ZACH DE LA ROCHA SIDE PROJECT DEBUTS Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine fame is finally debuting a song from his side project One Day As A Lion with former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. Named after the infamous graffiti which read "It's better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb," the band clearly has retained the radical politics of Rage while providing for a more stripped down drum-and-bass aesthetic. The song "Wild International" is [...]
SCARLETT JOHANSSON RELEASES EP, COVERS CURE Scarlett Johansson , much storied already in these pages (postings?) for her recent album of Tom Waits covers entitled Anywhere I Lay My Head , has just released a new live EP covering songs from said record as well as "Boys Don't Cry", the Cure classic. Given the live setting, one might think the songs wouldn't translate as well without the David Sitek production touch. However, these tracks remain whoozy and beautiful with Johansson's deep and whispy vocals providing [...]

JENNY LEWIS REVEALS SOPHOMORE SOLO ALBUM Jenny Lewis , frontwoman of our favorite alt-country-meets-indie-rock quartet Rilo Kiley , has announced the title and tracklist of her already impressive sounding second solo album. The LP will be titled Acid Tongue and will feature such esteemed guests as M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, and Elvis Costello (check out more details here) . Given the gorgeous Lucinda Williams' nature of Lewis' last record Rabbit Fur Coat we're hoping from more of the same here at Cannibal Cheerleader. Lewis [...]
WHIRLWIND HEAT DEBUT NEW ALBUM If you've never heard of these Beck -referencing, groove-tastic, spazalicious, leave-it-all-on-the-dancefloor rockers, you owe it to yourself to check out Whirlwind Heat . The first time I saw these guys was summer of 2006 on their tour with another Cannibal Cheerleader favorite Be Your Own Pet . Clearly these two acts had developed a competition to who could pull off the more insanity-induced set, and the winner was definitely the audience that night. The Heat have just released their newest LP, called Self-Titled [...]
LIFE IS A GIANT DRAG (UPDATE) Our old pal Annie Hardy of our favorite shoegazey solo-act Giant Drag has been staying busy, what with recording her new Swan Song EP and all (by the way check out the new version of "Swan Song" up on the band's Myspace , it's absolutely haunting and gorgeous). Recently Annie hooked up with Joe from the Icarus Line to perform a DJ set under the moniker Mister and Misses Howl, which will hopefully speak to more collaborations [...]
MARNIE STERN REVEALS NEW ALBUM DETAILS Just when it seems that's the world's indie-rock guitarists, content with swirly rhythms and rudimentary string-plucking, Marnie Stern is back to teach these kids how to shred. That's right, the greatest guitarist of modern indie rock is back with her second album called (bear with me now) This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That and it's out Oct. [...]

BLOC PARTY REVEAL "MERCURY" Yesterday we posed the question 'what do our favorite Gang of Four indebted dance-rockers Bloc Party have up their sleeve?'. Today we have our answer as Bloc Party's radio announcement was for a new single entitled "Mercury" (the video for which you can view below). Reports are vague as to if this is a one-off single or the first cut from their as of yet untitled third LP but either way we're digging the new, techno-infused 'Flux-ish' sound, even if its lacking some of [...]
BLOC PARTY PLANNING ANNOUNCEMENT? Yesterday afternoon our favorite British post-punkers Bloc Party posted an enigmatic Myspace Bulletin exclaiming "every half hour is a countdown" (this line of course being a lyric from the band's classic early single "Little Thoughts") and a timer counting down to something unknown. When the time reached zero another Myspace bulletin appeared, this time saying only this: BLOC PARTY. [...]

VOTE ACTION DESIGN FOR LOLLAPALOOZA Here's a video from M of the Action Design letting the world know that the band is taking part in a contest that could end up getting them a spot playing Lollapalooza this year. Watch this: Lollapalooza 08 Seems pretty straightforward. Just go to this site and vote for Action Design as many times as possible (once a day with [...]
BEN GIBBARD COVERS RILO KILEY/STARS At a recent solo gig for Rhapsody, Ben Gibbard gave the acoustic treatment to some Narrow Stairs already classics such as "Cath..." and "Grapevine Fires". However, the real excitement came when the Death Cab for Cutie frontman covered tracks from Rilo Kiley ("Silver Lining") and Stars ("Your Ex-Lover is Dead"), and our friends over at Stereogum have the videos . Go check them out immediately to see how lonely songs like these can be somehow made [...]
