Loud, Louder, Loudest

If the chorus of your track consists of only one word screamed over and over, you best choose that word wisely. Considered giants of the Bay Area hardcore scene, Ceremony know a few things about noise, and word choice. In their first recording for Matador, "Hysteria" grinds your skull, chipping off shards of bone like a runaway jackhammer. The drums are crisp, the guitar building in agitation, then exploding into glorious vocal fury. I find it difficult not to climb on top my desk, cackle like a banshee, and start kicking out computer screens one [...]

Ambien Dance

Light Asylum, Cold Cave and Tanlines enter the ring. Nerve-wracked and sweating they size up their competition, and the battle begins. The prize; Tezeo . The Brooklyn duo of Michael Beharie and Jeff Cristiani would make an ideal tourmate for any of the aforementioned acts, their music challenging notions of light and dark, fusing sinister thumping synths with soaring pop melodies. Their new split single Friends/Open Window was mixed by Sam Haar of Blondes, and it sounds like sleepwalking. Tezeo's Friends/Open Window [...]

Tread Lightly

In the past several months my desire to be entertained has been replaced with a thirst for solitude and I find myself increasingly attracted to music that sounds like wandering ominous places free of people, full of mystery. From the production duo behind Grails comes Lilacs & Champagne , whose self-titled release on Mexican Summer is one part beat tape, one part tie-dyed tapestry flapping against a pristine desert sky. Distant radio frequencies and cinema scenes are snipped and collaged with exotic psychedelia spanning decades. From beyond the dunes [...]

End Ya Whole Shit

There's nothing that kills a pleasant conversation about Gucci Mane like the statement, "I actually got into rap through Salem." (And nothing that more succinctly sums up art school, for that matter. And no, I didn't laugh in their face, but it was really hard.) I actually don't hate Salem, but let's just say I wouldn't dare utter their name in a discussion of rap music. Yet I've had a metal-guy-turned-rapper who opened for Salem on repeat all week, so maybe I should sit my stereotypical art school ass down for a minute. Richmond native [...]

Every Which Way The Wind Blows

From Buenos Aires, Paula Garcia creates lush dream pop under the name Sobrenadar . Slowly exhaling a trail of wispy breaths towards infinity, everything she touches turns to calm. It's music that reminds you that simple things are the most beautiful; the cool feel of a first raindrop on your skin, the vivid colors of sunset, the once again familiar laugh of a friend you've missed. Her five-track Physeos EP is a gorgeous blend of sounds for a more gentle existence. Sobrenadar's Physeos [...]

Come To Me Scared Princess

The streets all looked so strange. They seemed so far away, but Charlotte did not cry. There's the unshakable feeling of I know this, I've heard it before running through mysterious producer 1991 's newest track "Open To The Dark". Awash in a dreamy sea of static, just out of reach, Robert Smith's voice beckons with the plea of "Charlotte Sometimes". Slipping out of focus and gasping for air, "Open To The Dark" sounds like a radio submerged in the bathtub, minus the electric shock. An eerie, enticing introduction to 1991 from [...]

Wait For It

Irish duo Solar Bears present the first taste of their upcoming LP Supermigration with their stunning new track "Alpha People", which features guest vocals from Sarah P. of Keep Shelley in Athens . Sarah's voice takes on a new clarity, sparkling against the peaceful landscape of strumming synths. Ending with an unexpected, tender coda, Solar Bears suck you into the details, then urge you to step back and admire the larger portrait from afar. Try not to die of overexcitement before the album comes out. [...]

Lana Dull Rey

I was asked last week why I did not like Lana Del Rey . She's a highly marketable package from an aesthetic standpoint, but that's not why I dislike her. I'm not jealous that she's prettier than me. I have no interest in Lana Del Rey because there's no passion, no soul, no personality to her music, or self. We'll watch her catapult to mainstream fame this year, and it will happen in a ridiculously short amount of time. She's already halfway there. But hype is rarely able to be sustained, and she'll fall just [...]

Stuck On Repeat / #70

Storm On The Horizon

Producer DropxLife. (who has traded in the all caps for some periods) released his latest mixtape Further. this week. It's not as impressive as ALLXLEGENDS , with a faint, demo-like quality. One track though stands above the haze, "OldxRain.". An overcast balearic feel and some Chris Isaak-style guitar make for a smoky, slow-burner of the highest quality. It arrives at just the right time too. Earlier this week The Weeknd posted an open call for Toronto area guitarists. [...]

Stars In Her Eyes

Sounds like falling in love, but speaks of death and aliens. In "Cemetery", from Los Angeles duo Starred , the tender voice of Liza Thorn (formerly of Bridez, among other bands) surfs on waves of celestial reverb. If desire can be pegged to a single song, then this is it. Hedi Slimane is a fan, having shot the band recently for his photo diary. The stark session in his signature black & white tones conveys Starred's soot-caked beauty. Hedi Slimane's shoot with Starred can be [...]

Funeral Rites

The music of KLOAKS sounds exactly like what you'd expect from a band with such a dismal name. "Dreams Are Gone", which appears thus far to be the trio's only material, climbs slowly up a winding cathedral staircase. Below, a black-robed choir sings from hymn books. A heavy track that shovels a deep grave, with enough eyeliner for the last of the new romantics. Did I mention among the members is Michael Vincent Patrick of production duo Designer Drugs? Hoping we hear more from KLOAKS this year. Keep [...]

Goodbye 2011 / Best Albums #11-25

Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar
And so another year comes to a close. A year where genres often seemed obsolete as all accepted boundaries were blurred, and the internet became the single most valuable instrument for an artist to master. Music felt unpredictable, wild; new talent appeared from thin air, shot to acclaim, and it was exciting. You didn't need a lot of expensive equipment or years of formal training to be heard. This year in music was a victory of DIY spirit. Across today and tomorrow I'll be counting down my personal Top 25 Albums of 2011 . See you next year! [...]
