I'm never that asshole to run and write a post the moment a track hits my inbox, but right now I'm going to be that asshole because one of the bands I've been most excited about this year, Edinburgh newcomers Pet , have just posted their new single Middle Child Syndrome to their Bandcamp . The track bridges splendidly off the band's debut single What You Building?, mounting with a bright, Beach Boys' melody that pummels down into a place of gritty guitar wail misery. The [...]

Creating chaotic, tribal noise under the name Dem Hunger , musician and visual artist Louis Johnstone shows his not as scary side in a new split release titled More Pregnancy (under the aliases GSD/GG ALIEN ). The two tracks "Hair Tonic for Longer Hair" and "Bag Lady #31 Very B #113 showcase pared down electronic experimentations, the former a pulsing, metallic transmission from beyond, and the latter an agitated basement dweller creeping up the walls. Another interesting collection of sounds from a curious talent who flip-flops between [...]
Below is the latest edition of our weekly feature, Stuck On Repeat. The premise is simple, we've asked all our contributors to submit one track and a brief write-up. The track can be new or it can be old, just whatever we could not stop listening to this week. Chillwave closed out last year with a really bad rep. It was the joke that exploded into the year's biggest music trend, and those of us with "good taste" freely exercised our right to snark while waiting for it to tank. But in fact chillwave was a significant milestone for modern music, marking the beginning of a no industry era, where artists could quickly record, distribute, sell their material and manage their own rise. For fans, it changed how we consumed music. We were more collectively excited over new music than ever before, with a voracious appetite for the next [...]

We've focused a lot of space on the blog this year to reinterpreted R&B. We've heard nostalgia darkened and twisted, pitched up and laced through high-intensity dance beats and puffed from a blunt by slime-colored space aliens. This is not the radio hits, nor the smooth silk sheet sexual innuendo that hooked our young teenage ears more than a decade ago. It's something much bigger; a trend that has slinked its way into mainstream hip-hop production, and found equal embrace by DIY artists working in the furthest shadows of the fringe. And in that broad expanse it is fascinating to [...]

I've returned from CMJ where I spent far more time walking around than seeing music. What can I say, I'm very easily distracted. One of the bands I'd most wanted to see, and subsequently missed every one of their shows was Bleached , the newly formed act fronted by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin whom you might remember from one of the best live bands to disband in recent years, Mika Miko. As Bleached, the Clavin sisters sing rumbling punk rock & roll in unison over fuzzed out guitar riffs. Their [...]

In an age where most new music can be lazily reviewed within the framework of "[Band] sounds like [other band] plus [other band] plus [other pop culture reference]," it's not too often an album leaves me truly thinking, What in the fuck is this? Water Borders ' debut LP, Harbored Mantras , has a song entitled "Feasting on Mongeese", in which what sounds like an evil choir of possessed forest-dwelling goatherds sing about quite literally feasting on mongeese and waiting for snakes to depart, over wails, echoes, and tough, nasty [...]
A few weeks ago we introduced you to newly formed Chicago act Casimer&Casimir . Their debut track, a cover of a 1979 French pop song from Elli et Jacno titled "Anne Cherchait L'amour" , established the duo as fans of all things whimsical and dreamy. Today we're happy to introduce the first in what will be a series of themed, periodic mixes. For {Number One} , Casimer chose ten older, obscure-ish tracks which Casimir matched with ten recent, complementary selections. The result is a playful, kaleidoscopic journey across decades, hopping [...]

I've probably spoken on this topic before, but there are a lot gimmicks in music these days and not nearly enough original concepts. Running a blog has started to feel a bit like trying cross a parade of musical hopefuls dressed in mascot suits, throwing up jazz hands, ringing cowbells and chanting, "LISTEN TO MY MP3!" on a megaphone. Make good music, and present it in an engaging (not obnoxious) manner. That's all it really takes. I recently received an email introducing London producer patten 's JLAGQO CSOAAXS remix EP, and [...]

Were you at The Burlington Saturday night for NOWHERE CLUB ? We had a great time. There were even glow bracelets. Madalyn Merkey took us down a black hole with warped, experimental synth compositions. Sich Mang played an explosive set of "weirdo juke" (as we'll now be calling their genre). And Supreme Cuts smoked the place out. Our very own Moneyworth (3LC) closed out the night with a DJ set of hazy R&B and hip-hop that's [...]

Most of my favorite electronic music to have been released in the past year or two can be characterized by sensitive, organic elements. Acts like Caribou, Sepalcure, Gold Panda, Teebs and Four Tet all produce sounds that draw as much from the palette of folk music, as dance. One of the best tracks of this ilk recently comes from UK producer Throwing Snow (Ross Tones), the B-side off his Shadower/Sanctum single for new label Sneaker Social Club . While most praise seems directed towards "Shadower", it's "Sanctum" [...]

Otherworldly sounds creep from a back room, beautiful and mysterious they beckon, holding your attention for a fixed moment in time. The smoke trails of snuck cigarettes worm from wall to doorway, guiding you into a big, open space, where bodies move to prismatic beats, shoes squeaking on spilled drinks, brains switched to autopilot. On Saturday, October 8 we invite you to say fuck you to the familiar and join us at The Burlington for Nowhere Club . A night of whatever you want to happen, and [...]

I posted a couple of producer Antwerp 's early recordings some time ago , and Nico has been keeping busy, rolling out an EP and a slew of remixes (all of which can be heard on his SoundCloud ). His music continues to be experimental, with sounds built to loosely danceable peaks, that fall away in organic forms. His recent remix of Isle of Wight band The Shutes ' track " Noah's Ark " is intriguing [...]

If you were a fan of indie pop in the first half of last decade then you're probably familiar with the airy stylings of now defunct Detroit act PAS/CAL . I always thought of them as rock's complement to Stereolab, dabbling in similar forms of electronic noodling and experimental melodies. Out of thin air this week arrived a new track from frontman Casimer Pascal (who has since relocated to Chicago) recorded with his nephew VJ Casimir Caruso, under the name Casimer&Casimir . The duo cover a 1979 French pop song [...]

I do judge books by their covers. And albums. The artwork for hip-hop artist Astronautalis ' (Charles Andrew Bothwell) new album This Is Our Science can't be passed by without stopping to stare. The details of the bold image reveal a wonderful summary of the music. Bothwell's gaze conveys a focused strength, the look of someone who is confident, and prone to displays of intensity. The elaborate headpiece he wears tangles into itself, coins and chains drawing up regal imagery, peaking in a row of feathers arranged [...]
