Today's cover version has been floating round the blogosphere for some time, but I felt it was time to bring it up on my own blog. That, and... I'm too lazy to do much else. Pulp's Common People is possibly one of the only songs I've listened to without finding a tiny bit of criticism for it. I'm ridiculously biased of course, Pulp being one of my all-time favourite bands, but it's just a pure stroke of genius isn't it? Listening to [...]

I'll admit, posting has been slightly relaxed in the past week, but what with holidays, Christmas, families, and a million other things more important than blogging, I just really haven't had the time (nor could I justify spending my time blogging over playing with my new camera). At least I'm posting now, and this is the perfect way to kick off the new year (have a good one, by the way!). Let's remember now that this is a music blog, and not a "listen to me making excuses" blog. So, as we're all in the spirit of the [...]

It's now or never for this year. With tomorrow being Christmas Eve and all that jazz, I wouldn't be expecting another post until Saturday. So here it is - the Repeat, repeat. ultimate Christmas mixtape. The Yobs - Another Christmas (mp3, 2.5mb) Goldfinger - White Christmas (Bing Crosby cover) (mp3, 1.6mb) The Wombles - Wombling Merry Christmas (mp3, 3.2mb) Squeeze - Christmas Day (mp3, 3.5mb) The Who - Christmas (mp3, 5.3mb) The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I [...]

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah . Could there be a more obvious choice for this week's Saturday Covers song? With practically the whole of Britain chanting the song after its phenomenal promotion through the evil that is The X Factor , the winner Alexandra Burke releasing it as a Christmas single and no less than three versions of it fighting for Christmas #1, no other song would really suit for today's Saturday Covers. This is going to be one hell of a post. [...]

Hardcore Weezer fans may question why I've chosen Make Believe to be the album of choice for this post when they've written better albums. Simply put, it's because that's the first Weezer album I owned and loved. It's the album that converted me from just having heard Beverly Hills and Buddy Holly , which quite frankly suck compared to some other, less well-known Weezer stuff. Owning a dodgy Sri Lankan bootleg of Make Believe (which, as a pleasant surprise, included all the songs from [...]

After a fun-filled week which sadly involved no posting at all, it's time for what I predict to be one of the most popular Saturday Covers so far. So what have I been doing all week that's taken up all the free time I would otherwise have for posting and doing other nerdy activities? I've actually been involved in a production of We Will Rock You . I expect I'll do a post about the actual musical soon, because after being involved in it I've formed some particularly strong opinions about the plot - and they're not [...]

Bruce Springsteen hasn't done too badly for himself, has he? A holder of eighteen Grammy Awards, which is, umm... more than I can say I have. With songs like Born To Run and Born In The U.S.A. (yeah, OK, we get it, you've been born. So have most of us), it's difficult not to appreciate the pure talent this man holds. Obviously, with any popular artist, there's a general feeling that once they've sold more than a million records, they're no longer cool. OK, maybe he's not cool. I still like his music. But [...]

I actually complained to Channel 4 yesterday. That's right, I wrote an official letter (or rather, email) of complaint to a television channel regarding one of their shows. I'm getting old. Here's my original email: "Dear Channel 4, I was absent-mindedly watching The Home Show while making myself a meal this evening at around 8:20, and while my attention wasn't completely focused on the programme, I'm quite sure I heard the "sh**" word spoken quite clearly in a sentence regarding birds in an apartment [...]

Oh, I'm so in love with today's song. So in love. Birdland was composed by Joe Zawinul for Weather Report. Of course, we all know Weather Report, they're legends in jazz fusion. Combining funk, rock and art music with the all important element, jazz , Birdland is possibly one of the finest pieces of music composed last century, and that's beating Schoenberg's "Piece." Good old Schoenberg. Anyway, if you haven't heard Birdland, I really suggest you do. You won't hear anything quite like it again. [...]
B is for B-sides has returned! At least, for this week. So as it's nearing Christmas (yes, I hate to admit it to, but it's time to get all hyped up), I thought this week's B-side could have a nice little Christmassy feel. But of course, before we move on to the Christmas B-side you're all waiting for, we've first got to examine the A-side. And what is that? It's everyone's favourite ridiculously overrated rock and roll track by everyone's favourite underrated rock and roll artist, [...]

There's some big names doing the covering this week. Although, not as big as two weeks ago . No one's bigger than The Beatles. Spot that reference. Today's song is My Generation by The Who. You may have heard it. As with every good song The Who made, it's become overplayed to the point where it's boring and tedious to listen to. This is a great shame, as The Who wrote some awesome stuff in their time, but it should be savoured, not pumped into [...]

Today marks the start of what is hopefully going to be a long (and not to mention amazing) series of posts. Each "Where are they now?" post will take a look at an artist or band considered to be legendary, but unfortunately, forgotten by the majority of people. Well, here at Repeat, repeat. , we believe that these legends should not be put aside in the same box containing those oh so tragic one-hit wonders. No, we believe that a truly brilliant artist's musical career should be followed to the day when the music stops. So, Ray [...]

This'll be the third week running without B is for B-sides . I'm just too busy at the moment to justify a weekly thing. You'll have noticed that post counts are down recently, but I'm not letting this take priority over the work I've got to do. Saturday Covers is still running fine, and that's by far more popular! A final reminder that you can buy Delirious? new and final single, released today . After countless years of playing, they're breaking up, and we really, really want them to be on the charts one [...]

Prince Buster's One Step Beyond - a down-tempo version of a Madness song? Wrong: Madness play an up-tempo version of a Prince Buster song. Let's get the credit right. Prince Buster may not be a household name, but he's very influential and highly-regarded in the whole reggae/ska genre. Not only is he that, but he's the original performer of the successful Madness debut single, One Step Beyond. Buster's version, in comparison to the familiar Madness track, is more like a smooth, chilled-out, summer-day-smoking-weed-track. It's got some [...]

What's the best way to spend a Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning? Usually, taking a train full of smelly people up to Oxford then trekking through the town (full of smelly people, may I add) to the Carling Academy wouldn't be my first choice. But hey, when you've got Less Than Jake at the end of it... who cares, really? Sweat-stained skank-crumpled remains of the ticket. Imperial Leisure There's only one word to describe Imperial Leisure's [...]

This one's for those of you who are as sick of Beatles covers as I am. Instead of others covering Beatles songs... let's hear The Beatles doing the covering for a change. The interesting thing about all the performers featured today is that they're all considered legendary within their own genre. Often a cover is performed by little-known bands looking for a big boost by performing a song everyone knows, but these bands don't really need a boost. Although when these bands covered the song, they were actually not very well known, so maybe they did need the [...]

What were The Offspring before they were in fact Offspring? Well, foetuses (ha ha, Offspring...), but that's not the answer, smartass. They were actually Manic Subsidal, a band with about as much influence and respect as Hitler has today: none, really. Hardcore Offspring fans will tell you that Manic Subsidal recorded loads of awesome stuff, but I reckon that's a lie, mainly because there's only one recording known to exist. That recording appeared on Mystic Records compilation We Got Power 2: Party Animal , way back in 1985. The significance of that compilation? It was [...]

Since I've had Common People stuck in my head all the flippin' day, I figured it was a good excuse to post Pulp as my current obsession. I expect you all know Pulp. At least, all you UK residents - the US are quite frankly missing out. Led by Jarvis Cocker, who's pretty much set his own style which all young wannabe Britpop stars aspire to, Pulp have had a somewhat limited success. They were never superheroes, but they've always been regarded as legends in the genre. Talking of which, what is the genre? How do you define [...]

It actually is, you know. After all the endless build-up, the drama, the countless news reports... today is the deciding day. The winner of this election will become the most important and influential man on the planet, whose decisions affect millions of people worldwide. And I don't care. I'm not a US citizen - I can't actually vote for the president. Which kind of puts me out of the picture. Yes, maybe the newly-elected president will make some decisions that may affect me once or twice, but ultimately what happens to me is down [...]

I appear to be getting into a habit of posting late. It's all justified by my business, just be glad there's a Saturday Covers this week at all. On with the show. Today's song is actually Since You Been Gone (UK residents: you know, the one on the noodles advert) , with Rainbow's recording being considered a classic nowadays. It's unfortunate that people know the song for the cover, because silently in the background is the songwriter and original performer going barely credited. [...]
