While Adele's album was recent (and wonderful), it's also mostly an intense album about breakups and relationships which doesn't necessarily spell out S-U-M-M-E-R-F-U-N. So I was delighted to get my hands on Foster The People's "Torches". I haven't been able to listen to an album all the way through without skipping any tracks in quite a while, it manages to be incredibly fun music without losing any integrity. They are one of my favorite new bands and while they're on their second album so they're not technically "new", Boxer Rebellion are just starting to pick up speed thanks to a beautiful, anthemic album and a solid spot as the band in the movie "Going The Distance" with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. I saw a lot of great shows at SXSW; Ellie Goulding, Matthew & The Atlas, Dry The River, Jamie Woon, Penguin Prison and more. Some of my favorite discoveries were bands I didn't even get to see but heard some other way. If you haven't heard of the British chart-topping Ellie Goulding yet then after her sold out show at Webster Hall last night, hopefully you have. It's not uncommon for female artists who have experienced a large amount of success in the UK to come over to New York and play big shows but this one felt different. The Knocks warmed up the crowd the perfect amount and left them ready for Goulding to take on. A lady very close to my Glucky heart has a new video out and it was directed by my roommate Shervin Lainez (and edited by Dylan Steinberg ). I have toured with Ingrid for the last few years and it's been amazing. This song was a song she originally wrote for Cheryl Cole in the UK and then also decided to release a version of it herself. She's in the studio recording a new record right now and I can't wait to hear what's next for her.
For fans of Mumford & Songs, Johnny Flynn (they opened for the two bands on a tour last year), Fleet Foxes or general beautiful folky sounds. We've been a fan of Adele's from the beginning and I still remember meeting her for the first time in a small Soho bar in London after we'd corresponded on Myspace. Remember Myspace? Anyway, she has been a fully fledged star with a voice to match for the last couple years. I loved her first record and am so excited for the upcoming release.
