MP3: ScotDrakula - Kick Out The Amberlamps Real gleefully frenzied lo-fi burner from Melbourne's ScotDrakula. This opening track from their CRACKSTRENGTH album has a kind of pop naivety to it that's a lil bit reminiscent of some Goner bands but with an acidic haze just coating the whole thing and drying it right out. MP3: Kelly Rowland - Dilemma (BNRY Remix) London's Joe Bush aka BNRY recently upped this remix of Kelly/Nelly's 2002 classic on his soundcloud and it's nice timing, particularly given how much we at RQ have been revisiting late '90s-early '00s top 40 lately. "Dilemma" will always be a favourite, but this pitch-bent, housey update makes for a refreshing revisit. soundcloud

This weekend's gonna see the amazing Maggot Fest II line-up hit Sydney's Red Rattler. It's gonna be the first Sailors gig in AGES (literally SO LONG) plus Royal Headache 's first show since arriving home from the USA. Also: Chook Race are playing and a heap of other great bands! Unfortunately, it's not all great news: Alley Oop and the Hoopsters & Terrible Truths & Tough Troubles have had to cancel, but they'll be replaced on the bill by The Sweats , a totally raw guitar pop band featuring Joe and [...]

MP3: Glamour Lakes - Roof Australia's Glamour Lakes hit their first ever track (?) right outta the park; super lush synth shimmers and subtle headphone-ready beats that skirt the increasingly blurry peripheries of club/electronic/dance music. soundcloud
New video for the Ancient Romans track "Impluvium", directed by Cameron Stallones and Abbe Findlay. We're about to unveil some super exciting news for New Zealand and as Australians will know, you can catch Sun Araw on a huge tour of Australia at the start of 2012. buy

MP3: Sures - Poseidon This totally irresistible late summer jam from Sydney's Sures has the requisite heavy reverb and surf guitars in place, but it's the rich melody and dramatic use of '60s doo-wop vocal styling that trip some heavy nostalgia vibes here (plus a sick J Mascis-esque solo in the outro). via triple j unearthed facebook / bandcamp
MP3: Step-Panther - My Neck Terrifically drawling slacker pop-punk from Sydney's Step-Panther with an appropriately charming & unpretentious video. This jam from their debut LP has that real '90s lo-fi charm but without the forced eccentricity that characterises a lot of '90s revivalist bands, and the video itself reminds me of one of my favourite ever clips from back then: The Smashing Pumpkins' "1979". It's real hazy & nostalgic etc. but for "real shit" that "real bros" do: hanging out & eating chips at the beach with a fluffy white dog; smashing stuff with [...]

MP3: Patten - Plurals Seems like the word "leftfield" is genuinely useful when talking about London's Patten; his terminal end-times decayed house music is on a vaguely Hype Williams type of dark cultural response and sounds genuinely pretty way out. The excellent new album has been floating around for a bit but check this new video and mp3 for "Plurals". If yr in London, catch him live at Camp Basement on Old Street in January. GLAQJO XAACSSO is out now on [...]

MP3: Cool Angels - Are U Real Sounds like Nick Ray aka Speculator's recent tour with Boy Friend was a special one cos this new Cool Angels project is still majorly blissing on roadtrip/friendship feelings; some big hungover staring-out-the-window moments are coming out of these slowed and scruffed 80s tape loops, much like previous Speculator classics like "Seventh Heaven" but way blue-er, especially moments like "Are U Real" where guest vocals from Young Prisms' Stef Hodapp evoke even more dusky haze. Demure is out on [...]

MP3: Branches - Canção para o Pedro Perfect for the emergent summer just on the horizon, this new one from Portuguese musician Pedro Rios hits all the appropriate beach imaginaries. Watch out for two new Branches tapes out real soon on Solid Melts and UUUTapes . bandcamp / soundcloud

MP3: Teenhäze - Sea You All over the sun-flecked, tropical glimmers on this one from Stockholm's Teenhäze ( tea-en-hah-za). Making apt use of reverb and delay-heavy rhythms, there's a sparseness at play which just seems to engulf you ever so casually while the fuzzy, almost indecipherable vocals round it all out with a mellow nonchalance. Though beautifully and purposely arranged it just feels somehow incidental, as if Teenhäze put this all together on a day where he was bested by the heat. Not caring about anything other than trying to find [...]

MP3: James Ferraro - Earth Minutes James Ferraro's production values and cultural scope have both shifted on his new Hippos in Tanks -released Far Side Virtual , a hyper 21st century ode to clean iPad living, home-computing, Sat Nav, smoothie chugging self-help guru life views and "Palm Trees, Wi-Fi and Dream Sushi" that Condo Pets only slightly hinted at. It's weird, then, how what is possibly the darkest set of signifiers ever enables what are some of the most genuinely beautiful songs of this year. This is something [...]

MP3: Geoffrey O'Connor - So Sorry (Chet Faker remix) Geoffrey O'Connor's debut solo album, Vanity Is Forever , really capitalises on the potential he's always had to sound breathy and sensual, but this remix - from fellow Melburnian Chet Faker - explores a different aspect of romantic song. Chet Faker takes the original 's noir-ish '80s pop-rock forward ten years in time and, in the best possible way, evokes the particular brand of downtempo sensuality made popular by the Cafe Del Mar series. It's brilliant to hear those cold, dubby [...]

First peek at a new release from Spencer Clark (of Monopoly Child Star Searchers, Black Joker and what not), this time under the name of Fourth World Magazine "because that's who Charles [Berlitz] writes for". Bright cowabunga dawns, rubbery, cosmic slow zones and a new sound clarity for visiting some of those previous bamboo rhythms, this is sounding pretty amazing. But anyway, all the info is at his new website , where you can also buy the Spectacle Of Light Abductions LP direct. buy

MP3: Purple & Green - Right Here (Zac Eno Remix) Zac Eno has turned Purple & Green 's (Adam Forkner/ White Rainbow & Justin Leon Johnson) totally amazing retrofitted luxury-house jammer from earlier this year into something that is far more eerie UK post-dubstep and chopped-up vocals. This has just been released as a 12", which also features two ridiculously good remixes from Emotion II Emotion ("Rafael of Miracles Club and Avalon K of Finesse, ex glass candy etc"), and in full on house-styles there is a "club mix" and [...]
"Hippy" is one of the highlights of Ghost Wave's terrific EP of earlier this year, and the Aucklanders have just got around to putting out a video for it. This clip features colour filters, dudes dancing real loose, washed out footage of the beach and one of the best lo-fi pop punk tunes you'll hear all year; check it out! facebook / label

Catcall - Satellites by rosequartzblog So excited to be able to premiere this brand new jam from our girl Catcall. The first taste of her debut LP, The Warmest Place - last year's "Swimming Pool" - featured an amazingly hypnotic Italo vibe w/ drum reverbs stretching out into infinity, palm-muted guitars and a bunch of veiled sexual references, but "Satellites" steps up the excitement level. This track channels the current super-slick bedroom r&b trend into a dramatic pop banger but manages to hold on to the melancholic atmosphere and [...]
Been waiting for a video to pop up of this; "Streetwise" wasn't the only mega hit from the LA Vampires Goes Ital collab (duh!) and this video by VC from The Deeep is perfect for this writhy, "outsider glam". Check out LA Vamp's RQ mix of classic house from a couple of weeks back if you missed that, too via No Fear Of Pop
Ultra blissed and blown-out new demo from Austin's Lay Bac that is sounding pretty sick in all its roughness; unsure as to whether it'll receive the gloss that previous tracks like "Stay Out Tonight" have but for now it slots in pretty nicely somewhere between the lo-fi jubilance of Sun Araw and Youth Lagoon . Thanks Jono Mi Lo for the tip. facebook
Heather Palmer highlights the sexy, 4x4 day trip vibe of first track from Napolian's excellent (and otherwise mostly condo-dwelling) Bear On The Rug split tape w/ Computer Dreams with this new video. facebook / tumblr
