Have you guys heard of John Mayer? He's this indie singer-songwriter who's been around for awhile, but is really starting to make some waves in the blogosphere. Anyway, this is his best song. It's called "Kid A." Really though, this is my favorite thing he's ever done. This and Jessica Simpson. Oompa Loompa? [...]

I haven't listened to Stereolab in awhile, but they're one of those bands that consistently delivers the quality pop. Their live shows are also great because they project old experimental films and animation - Maya Deren, Oskar Fischinger, etc. They even named their recent anthology after my favorite film, Ernie Gehr's Serene Velocity . The thing with the 'Lab is that they're also Marxists. A lot of their lyrics, when they're not spacy and vague, tends to be about revolution and political systems, which is funny, given that their songs are so loungy and [...]

Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer) is one of those electronic producers who I especially respect because: 1) his productions aren't limited to any single genre 2) unlike most producers these days, he's familiar with non-dance music, as well as underground music that existed before the 1990s 3) he legitimately likes the music he samples, and doesn't do it in an ironic or mocking way 4) he's a really nice guy Forrest runs Cock Rock Disco, a label that focuses mainly on breakcore. While some of his music could be labeled breakcore, a lot of it [...]

Fair warning: every Phil Collins radio hit ever will make an appearance here. It's just a matter of time. Aside from the fact that "Two Hearts" is one of the catchiest songs ever, I also chose to post it now to help demonstrate the breadth of music I'll be featuring here. There are no genre limitations on Video Pop. Phil "King of Soundtrack Pop" Collins is just as likely to show up as a laptop dude like The Field. And I'm not posting Phil Collins ironically or The Field (or any other [...]

The first time I heard The Field was back in 2005 when his song "Action" came out on the Kompakt Total 6 compilation. Sampling the Holland-Dozier-Holland-penned Four Tops classic "Reach Out (I'll Be There)," the track swirls and skitters for over 5 minutes, meditating on the haunting pop loop that makes the original song so memorable. A Motown fragment digitally processed and looped with a pounding four to the floor backbeat - it all seemed like a music-lover's inside joke. What's more, a song so sample-based (and tongue-in-cheek) seemed somewhat strange coming from Kompakt, world [...]

Welcome to Video Pop! The purpose of this blog is pretty simple: to share the best pop music available. Melody, harmony, and euphony: these are the touchstones of Video Pop. I, Rainbo Video, and various other friends will be posting fairly regularly. There might not be a post every day, but you can be assured that when there is a post, you will be in for a high quality pop track, one that will deliver the kind of unspeakable, euphoric feeling that can only be derived from pop music and cherry-flavored candy.
