Ryan Adams responds to Courtney Love's, "Hey, you ripped my daughter off!" charges
It's only fair I link to Stereogum's coverage of the (as described well by one of the commenters, "It's like watching the embodiment of syphilis and herpes fight.") Ryan Adams v. Courtney Love discussion. If you can't be bothered (and I wouldn't advise you be), you can just read what Adams has to say here: to whom it may concern, these days i find myself working harder than ever at being at my best, overcoming my fears and pushing myself creatively in my every [...]
5 Great Lost Songs
Well, maybe not lost, exactly, but out of the way at least. Links, incidentally, will stream the track via Last.fm. Can I Stay With You? Nick Garrie The Nightmare of JB Stanislas , 1969 Although a minor success in Europe, this fellow was, as I understand it, virtually ignored in Britain and America, despite releasing this album, which is really quite excellent, and this happens to be my favorite track off of it. The weather's too hot for this right now, though; it's a wonderful early [...]
Miley Cyrus has been offered a chance to prevent more Miley Cyruses
Ah, funny thing. First Lil Wayne reminds us to go down strapped . Now it looks like Miley Cyrus has been offered a chance to tell the 11 year olds who watch her show that, indeed, condoms are a good thing . If the government isn't going to do it (and they aren't, because they're the government), it seems like asking a 15 year old girl and a bad rapper to hawk condoms is a pretty good idea, if you ask me (Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?). I think it's [...]
Shuffle Post.
I want to write more for this blog, I really do. Like right now, I have a number of good articles in mind ("What makes a good lyricist?," a write-up on the new Okkervil River record leak, baroque pop profiles, etc) but I'm just so very tired. But I do want to write something, so for tonight, I'm taking the lazy way out and doing a "Shuffle Post." Herein shall we enter the weird and wild world of my iTunes library for ten songs, yet unknown to you or I. And for each, I shall mention something about it worth [...]
Denver Friday
At The Bug Theater in Denver Yeah, dude, I was there. The last Jandek post I made seemed to get people's attention and, shortly thereafter, I got an email from Marshall: OH OH. I was just reading on Wikipedia about Jandek. It was mentioned he is playing a show in Denver on the 25th. Between moving, working and all sorts of other drains on my watch and my wallet that have come lately, I wasn't sure I'd be able to go, a thought that bummed me out a good deal. Sure enough, [...]
Cavalera Conspiracy show that I went to
So, I told a few people here about the free tickets to see Cavalera Conspiracy. It was a fun show. A lot of energy from all the bands that played especially Throwdown, Dillinger Escape Plan, and definitely Cavalera Conspiracy. The reason I'm making this post is because of what happened at a Throwdown set. The show was pretty much full of Metalheads and a few scene kids alike. When Throwdown started playing the show, all the tough hardcore kids started Hardcore Dancing in the middle of the room. There just being rude to everyone because when they hit [...]
Courtney Love is all, "OMG, I'M GONNA QUIT BLOGGING. MAYBE. DO I LOOK HIGH?"
Indeed, Idolator, faithful watchers of the Courtney Love blog scene that they are, has reported that the woman who once intoned a request to have her anus waxed (life advice: do not Google this news story) has decided maybe it would be a good idea to stop blogging. She regrets to inform us that, "LACK OF GRAMMATICAL CORRECTNESS AND SPELLING MAKES ONE LOOK ON DRUGS FOR SOME REASON." Hear, hear, I say. Also, I intend to put that on a t-shirt posthaste.
Alice Cooper tries to save Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse's father gives insights as to why she's nuts. (Girls with Low Self-Esteem!)
Well, it sure is nice of ol' Alice Cooper to give some kind words out to Amy Winehouse. It's not-so-nice of Amy Winehouse's dad to say he'd rather have a wax impression of his daughter than the real deal. How kind! Clearly this moves her one step forward, closer to recovery. Well, so, it looks like Britney Spears's mom killed a 12 year old boy in 1975. But it's okay Mrs. (Ms.?) Spears, in 1975, who wasn't killing [...]
Cold War Kids: Loyalty to Loyalty
I'm in love with the Cold War Kids. Their first album, Robbers and Cowards , is genius track after genius track about a myriad of things from a man on death row to some pretty messed up self-examination. On top of that, they put on the best live show I've ever seen. So, naturally, I was very excited when I found out they slapped a release date on their newest album, Loyalty to Loyalty : September 3. They haven't released any tracks (and we haven't been fortunate enough for any to leak *wink*) except for [...]
Darker My Love in the LA Times
Awesome profile of the band and preview of their upcoming CD, 2, in the LA Times . Darker My Love is a really good band. I highly recommend their first CD. I hope the second is just as good. I was going to see them at Monolith , but I think they dropped out. They're opening for the Dandy Warhols here later in September, though, so I'll get a chance to see them then. Here's the video for their song Two Ways Out: [...]
In Soviet Russia, emo bans YOU (Sorry, I had to)
But apparently, in Russia Russia, Russia bans emo . Now let's be honest: adults have never been able to figure out what's going on with kids on a mass scale. And any kid who tries to explain it to them isn't trusted because, well, they aren't an adult! I'm not saying this out of sympathy for whiny kids with hair covering half their faces, more because this simply has nothing to do with emo at all . This has to do with scene kids who hang out at malls (or in Russia, do they [...]
Tapes are still popular
So apparently, tapes are still popular music distribution in prison. Weird. They said in California State Prison, that tapes are still on demand. CD's are not prohibited because it could easily be made into a shank when your rocking out to Fall Out Boy or Mariah Carrey in prison. So I guess music is still being kept real in the house. So next time you make make a throw away round on your old mix tapes, think of the prisoners in California, because they need it!
Courtney Love accuses Ryan Adams of stealing from her daughter
Sweet, celebrity blogging! I have no idea if she's speaking the truth, if she's high, or if... whatever, but Courtney Love is convinced that Ryan Adams stole approximately 858,000 dollars from Frances Bean's trust fund. Uhhh, okay. Ryan Adams annoys me - I'll give you that. But, er, taking several years to figure out that almost a million dollars has gone missing? Okay! She's completely insane, man. Insane! The only person I feel bad for is her daughter; it's gotta be incredibly rough growing up knowing that your mom had "very safe [...]
Steve Albini tells a your mom joke, is awesome
I was looking for June of '44 videos to put up here so that I could write an entry about them, but, alas, there was nothing that really leaped out at me of theirs on Youtube. In the related videos section, though, came a Shellac video. I haven't listened to Shellac in a long time, but just the other day, I had Squirrel Song stuck in my head ("This isn't some kind of metaphor! God damn! This is real!"). Anyway, here's a video of Shellac doing My Black Ass. At the very beginning, there [...]
Black Metal's top 5 of the shittiest production value
When Black Metal started emerging in the the Metal scene in the early 90's (of course not counting the first wave Black Metal), Black Metal had a very very poor music production quality, or kvlt or gr1m as they call it. This was a social outcry to the world of Pop Music and Metal music and all its glory multi-million dollar production quality music. Thus emerging the cry of the shitty production value. Bands at the time where recording music on the basement and making it sound as bad as possible. Recording it on answering machines. The more worse the [...]
Peasant: It's Warm
The perfect word to describe Peasant (who moonlights as Damien DeRose) is "warm." Other adjectives I've heard used are "heavenly" and "soft" and "cozy." If you ask me, all of these adjectives fit wonderfully to his music. He's a singer/songwriter whose songs use little besides and acoustic guitar and his voice, which, by the way, has a great quality to it. His songs are short, usually ranging about 2:30 to 3:00. But they need not be any longer as he manages to say so much in the two and a half minutes he gives us. As it's 1:45 [...]
