Or so say Josh Weller and Paloma Faith on their festive offering " Its Christmas And I Hate You " (YouTube above). I'm afraid it's that time of the year when people play music they wouldn't tollerate on any of the other 364 days of the year. Here's Music Like Dirt's festive countdown, featuring music thats actually both Christmassy AND good. Merry Christmas. 1. Kelpe - Silent Night One of my favourite acts of the year, Kelpe , on possibly the label of the year, DC Recordings. [...]

Ryan(StopMe): As an update on a previous TEN4SE7EN , Dinosaur Pile-Up's fearsome 'My Rock 'n' Roll' is about to be released on 73 (I uploaded a demo in September). You can pre-order a copy from Rough Trade. Meanwhile, here's another ten new tunes for you to peruse (And merry Christmas, by the way): First up is a track from Amazing Baby's free-to-download 'Infinite Fucking Cross' EP. 'Supreme Being' is a lethargically wasted epic bringing to mind Spiritualized moving in a new Psychedelic Prog direction. [...]

Unlike my Top 100 tracks list I can't claim to have driven myself insane trying to root out and listen to every fantastic album released this year. In fact its a challenge these days to get me to actually listen to a full album, so destructive has the ipod shuffle function been to my attention span. Here then are my albums of 08. Its not really a best of, but they are the ones that got the most listens and gave me the most pleasure. As ever I'm sure I've forgotten as many future classics as I've remembered. [...]

Ryan (StopMe): Here are another ten of the finest and freshest sounds unearthed from the four corners of the Earth: Cee-Lo contributes more than just his soulful vocals to Chicago rapper Common's 'Make My Day' as he also brings in some Gnarls Barkley style Pop sunshine. If only Gnarls Barkley had had a tune this good on their second album. The Dodos bring a bit of Banjo picking Folk introspection on 'Walking' . It's the opener to their [...]

Professor Green's spent much of the last 12 months fighting to get his master tapes back off Warner's after the collapse of Mike Skinners ' Beats ' label. Now he's back with ' The Green EP ' (available here) featuring Adele, Ny and erm... Gladys Knight. Professor Green - ' Hometown Glory (feat. Adele) ' (MP3) Its been a big year for The Young Turks label, and 09 is set to be equally fine if Tanlines are a sign of the quality they've signed up. [...]

Ryan(StopMe): Here are ten more new sounds to cast out that chilly weather from your heart: 'Ghost Feeder' is the sound of Keith Moon grabbing a couple of wooden spoons and going wild in the bake-ware aisle at Tescos. Add on some burbling sub-sonic Bass and you've got an enthralling instrumental from Arcadion . Arcadion - ' Ghost Feeder ' (MP3) Brakes have just made a track from their forthcoming 2009 album available. If [...]

Ryan(StopMe): Here's a new compilation I made based solely on the theme of spoken word music. I call it ' The Art Of The Spoken Word ' and it actually features some of my all-time favourite tracks. Like Luxembourg's 'Making Progress', The White Stripes' 'Hand Springs' (Possibly my number one favourite track!), Ironweed's 'Down To My Grave (Audio Suspects Remix)' and Dexys Midnight Runners' 'Reminisce (Part Two)'. The full tracklisting is as follows (Including links): 1. MC Honky - 3 Turntables & 2 Microphones / 2. [...]

' Rita was sixteen years... hazel eyes and chestnut hair... She made the Woolworth counter shine ' Not many shops can claim to have inspired lyrics as beautiful as Nanci Griffith's ' Love at the Five and Dime " but Woolworth's 99 year place at the heart of our high streets gives it a level of affection beyond whats ultimatly just a chain store. Its likely disapearance will leave a huge hole in town centres like my own Walthamstow thats unlikely to be replaced with anything other than 99p stores (ironic given Woolies beginnings). More importantly [...]

Ryan (StopMe) : I've just finished reading Bryan Talbot's engrossing 'Alice In Sunderland' (Nice how it syncs up in part's with Channel 4's unmissable current drama about the English Civil War called 'The Devil's Whore') and I'm now fully ceased of the idea that Sunderland is the greatest cultural focal point in all Christendom! I haven't just been reading though, I've also been listening and here's ten things my ears were enjoying: If like me, you loved Fisherspooner's first album (But thought everything they've released since then has been a big pile of [...]

Ryan(StopMe): Almost all my Christmas shopping is done and I've still found time to pick ten more tunes from across the world, the web and the musical-spectrum to tickle your taste buds: On 'Sabali', hugely successful African musicians Amadou and Mariam let producer Damon Albarn mess with their sound to create somethingkin to Jean-Michel Jarre. This defies all expectations of what you'd imagine a "World Music" record would sound like. Benji Hughes is an ambitious chap since his debut album 'A Love Extreme' [...]

Akira The Don - ' Thanks For All The AIDS (NY Master) ' (MP3) Akira The Don is a man on the mission, to create 'the best artist website in the world' . I think he's selling himself short - its already the best artist website - he needs to aim higher and go for all out ' best website ' fullstop. On a personal note until today I was at least confident that this site was easily the best blog in the world called music like dirt, but now I can't [...]

'No Lower Case Kisses' is from Big Strides' 'Super Custom Limited' long player. They fuse intergalactically funky Indie with off the wall Rap. As if that wasn't enough, they throw in some squealing Blues sounds on the Guitars and Harmonica. 'Born In The 80's' is near perfect Pop-Rock from Australia's The Boat People . It's so fun, summery, catchy and gorgeous, it almost hurts. MusicLikeDirt predicted I'd like Dan Black and he obviously knows my tastes because [...]

Having just joined MOG I thought I'd try out their random first line lyrics game. If anyone guesses more than a couple of the 21 below I'll be more than amazed (I'm not sure I know them and they're on my itunes!) Here were my instructions: Step 1: Put your music player on random. Step 2: Post the first line from the first 21 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song(Not strictly true... who knew I had so many instrumentals!) Step 3: Post and let everyone guess what SONG AND [...]

Whittling down this week's tracks to just ten was almost agonising. So much so, that I may be forced to do a mid-week post featuring another ten (I haven't decided yet). For the time being, here are the best ten (Oh yeah, by the way... Barack Obama!!): As a ravenous meat eater it's a little perverse that I love Beatnik Filmstars' 'Animal Crackers' , with it's declarations of "All you animal farmers are going straight to hell". It sounds like a lovely little Indie song on the surface but the lyrics are [...]

A bad month for the BBC, standards falling, an elderly gentleman inappropriately used on air, and the decision making of those from the top to the bottom of the corporation called into question. Yes, Thats right Alan Yentob presented ' Imagine: Jay Z - He Came, He Saw, He Conquered '. At least it's a snappier title than the original choice: ' Is this really all thats left of the arts coverage of the most respected broadcaster in the world: Lets give Hip-Hop an hour long documentary in a decent time slot but why not get a middle aged, [...]
