Goodbye cruel Canadian winter. Springtime is upon us. So why don't we celebrate with a springtime playlist. Listen here .

Douglas Unger: "Old News" (album review)

Douglas Unger: "Old News" (album review) It's taken seven years for Swedish singer Douglas Unger to produce his sophomore album.  On April 3rd (in Europe), everyone gets to find out what emotional pain and drama he's been going through. Unger's musical influences are a who's who of American blues and rock map.  It's easy to pick out the sounds of Springsteen or Waits or even Stevie Ray Vaughn in his work.  Toss in a bit of Doors-like keyboard and organ work and you have a unique and forceful sound. Broken Deer: "My Heart's in the Highlands" (video)

Broken Deer - My Heart's in the Highlands
Broken Deer is the stage name of experimental Yukon musician Lindsay Dobbin. Her latest work is the album Polaraura . The music and imagery on Polaraura is a bit on the wack-a-doodle Earth Mother end of the spectrum, but I'd probably be going a little bonkers too if I lived off the grid in a cabin outside Whitehorse with only a dog to keep me company. Watch the video for "My Heart's in the Highlands/Snow Walk" here:

the Morals look to put Barrie on the musical map

Barrie, ON isn't exactly renowned as a hotbed of exciting new music. Folk/pop/rock trio the Morals may be poised to change that. The group have a strong debut EP, Music Tree Life Understanding , under their belts, with songs that revolve around the co-lead vocals of Hollie Hobby and Todd Jeffrey. Have a listen to their record here: Music Tree Life Understanding by the Morals The band recently played CMW and have already been announced as one of the [...]

The Strokes: "Comedown Machine" (album review)

The Strokes: "Comedown Machine" (album review) That's it!   The Strokes are officially no longer worth my time.  I thought after the atrocious  Angles  that the only place for this band to go was up.  Was I ever wrong, as they instead chose to continue their creative free fall. One can't help but feel as though they've been transported back to 1982 with the proliferation of hollow beats and bad synths.  What I wouldn't give to hear actual drums on the record.  It's completely conceivable to see Albert Hammond Jr performing these songs with keytar in hand.  While the Yeah Yeah Yeahs [...]

Rec Centre: "Times A Billion" (album review)

Rec Centre: "Times A Billion" (album review) April 2nd will see the release of Times A Billion , the debut album from Vancouver's Rec Centre . The record is marked by short, sweet, slick indie pop nuggets. A bright propulsive beat cha-chas its way throughout the lead track "Missin' Out".  Bright doesn't even approach doing justice to "Wait a Second".  The song is like being blinded by a sunbeam.  The band even manage to make a tune titled "Let's Get Divorced!" sound chipper.
