New York-based La Big Vic just dropped a game-changing debut. We got a taste of what the group's been cookin' with various tracks that have trickled in over the past year, but the whole of the eight-song, 45-minute Actually is simply breathtaking. Describing an album as "uncategorizable" or as an amalgam of multiple genres is just not an interesting description anymore, and one that does no justice to this kind of record. You hear a little of the fluid, utopian soundscapes of Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis, as well as occasional vocoder-heavy galactic shag grooves a la [...]

Stoked to hear Hella is back doin' the damn thing. Someone has to keep Lightning Bolt on their toes, and the spazz warriors in Hella are the best adversaries for the job. Their first album is quite a long time, Tripper , is out August 30th. Get a taste below. MP3 ::: Hella - Headless
If you're on the fence about leaving everything behind and joining a commune, the pastoral beauty of Carol Kleyn might give you that extra push. Her self-released 1976 LP, Love Has Made Me Stronger, is a whismical exploration of arboreal pop and Anglo folk, featuring a voice as powerful and mesmerizing as Sandy Denny . While the harp was often Kleyn's weapon of choice, she didn't learn to play until she was 21, after receiving one as a gift from her friend and mentor Bobby Brown (not this one). Kleyn quickly mastered [...]

Save the date! Friday, September 16th, Black Moth Super Rainbow rolls through Derby City to morph your brain into a cotton candy swirl. As an added bonus, you'll get to catch them at the intimate Zanzabar . Glad OK Productions jumped on this, otherwise I was going to. So, so fucking pumped on this gig. Keep a watch of our Twitter for any additional details, and of course, don't forget the Dandelion Gum reissue comin' at you like El Niño on June 7th. MP3 ::: [...]
![[Co-Premiere] Eric Copeland – "Krankendudel"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3461531_lg.jpg)
The mercurial Eric Copeland is most prominently known as one-third of Black Dice , and to a lesser extent, the destructive half of Avey Tare's Terrestrial Tones . Copeland's solo material, beginning with the Paw Tracks -released Hermaphrodite in 2007, is just as remarkable, and decidedly less grating for those not terribly enthused by the noise genre. While both he and Black Dice employ dragnet sound collages and splattered sampling, Eric Copeland's solo material emphasizes destroyed rhythms and mechanical atmosphere. The end result is a vague yet wholly fucked version of dance music. [...]
Chill visuals for a chill song. Makes me want to YouTube some of my own old family videos. Six Organs of Admittance 's latest, Asleep on the Floodplain , is available on Drag City right now. Go peep it.
Since we're already talkin' Bachelorette today, she just dropped a gorgeous new video for one of the highlight tracks on her latest self-titled.

Compared to the warm, sample-heavy bedroom folk of her debut Isolation Loops and her mood-shifting, mood-altering sophomore effort My Electric Family , the latest album from Bachelorette is icy, distant, and minimal. Opting for the self-titled three albums in, Bachelorette exudes a particular air of foreboding... at least comparatively. That makes sense, considering the album was recorded and assembled in locales of turbulence, such as her native Christchurch, New Zealand (which suffered a devastating earthquake earlier this year) and, interestingly, Tripoli, Libya (I assume you're aware of that nation's current strife). [...]
This disquieting video from the ever-quirky Quintron + Miss Pussycat recently premiered via our friends at IMPOSE . If you wondered what a Kenny Bloggins weekend looks like, mash play on that vid one time (puppets always included). And while we're on the subject, Quintron just confirmed a gig at Louisville's Zanzabar on June 7th. I have no other details about the show, but once I get 'em, you'll know too. Also no word on whether you can purchase your own Drum Buddy at the merch table. See link below if you don't know what I'm [...]

From the foothills of the Appalachians comes Blithe Field , the hauntological solo project of Athens, OH-based Spencer Radcliffe. Blithe Field arrives at the right time too, as Boards of Canada have presumably been assimilated by the borg and the former Fahey-summoning Bibio discovered the cosmic ball of funk on Bootsy Collins' ranch and just wants to dance. We need an artist like this now more than ever. Radcliffe's forthcoming full-length from Lefse sister label Waaga , Two Hearted , is an impressive debut, proving that he might be ready to receive said torch. [...]

Helado Negro is the nom de plume of the mercurial Roberto Lange, a multimedia artist who also serves as one-third of Prefuse 732s amazing Savath & Savalas project, as well as a go-to collaborator with the likes of Bear in Heaven and Julianna Barwick. Due to the great cosmic injustice of hype, Lange has yet to achieve indie cult hero status. Not that he probably cares, but it's still too damn bad. However, Canta Lechuza might help propel him a bit more to the forefront, where he belongs. For non-Spanish speakers, Helado Negro [...]

20072s Dandelion Gum is still my favorite release from Black Moth Super Rainbow , and the dudes are reissuing that sucker on June 7th! The reissue comes in your choice of high quality binary code, compact disc, vinyl, and/or cassette with an additional 14 (!!) songs... including the never heard before "Old Yes" that you can stream below. "Old Yes" is kind of a smooth jam... some real girl-lemme-come-over-and-see-' bout-ya shizz, which I always appreciate. Preorder it at Graveface . POSSIBLY RELEVANT ::: [Interview] Black Moth Super [...]

Michael Gira and the feel good nice weather folks of Swans just announced a fairly thick east coast run of dates around their All Tomorrows Parties performance this fall. Feeling down and need a pick me up? Feel "I Am the Sun" and "A Screw" live, get lifted, and praise be to God. Yah mo b at either the Chicago, Nashville, or Lexington show. See you there? 09/08/2011, Baltimore, MD, Sonar 09/09/2011, Raleigh, NC, Fletcher Opera Theater - Hopscotch Festival 09/10/2011, Asheville, NC, Orange Peel 09/11/2011, Charlotte, NC, Tremont Music Hall [...]

Chicago correspondent Davves traded in his violent jalopy for a Tame Impala last week at Lincoln Hall. He's a fucking unicorn. Tame Impala , the buzztastic Aussie quartet made their round to Chicago for two back to back sold out shows at the new-ish Lincoln Hall venue Tuesday, and Wednesday night. Tame Impala released one of my favorite albums of the year in 2010, Innerspeaker . Like, these guys seriously blow my mind. Their proggy jams and brilliant riffage are enough to chew on for quiet some time. I've still got this jam [...]

I think June 19th is Father's Day, right? Or maybe it's the 12th? Shit man, I have too many dates to keep up with. Well whatever, look... Nashville's mighty motherfucking JEFF The Brotherhood with an assortment of relatively heavy, fine local artists, including Temporary Residence signatories Coliseum and country thrashers State Champion . Take your father regardless. The melee happens at famed watering hole Magbar in Old Louisville. While not traditionally a music venue, the good folks at Cropped Out don't really like booking shows in traditional spaces, which I can appreciate. Actually, [...]

Remember the the insane Kumamoto-based Fat Cat electro-thrash outfit Xinlisurpreme? It's fairly obscure unfortunately, but their Murder License EP lit a fire for me. IDM so scary, it made Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" look like an afternoon game of cornhole with dear old dad. Shit was bananas.... and that was the first thing that Ming Ming reminded me of. Total sensory assault, with electronics and, believe it or not, some hooks! I know nothing more of Ming Ming other than the fine folks at Lefse got a hold of him/her/them for a very [...]

Last June, ex-Slint bassist turned entrepreneur Todd Breshear celebrated the 13th anniversary of his cult video store along the main Highlands strip, Wild and Wooly Video , with a huge blowout at Headliners. The night ended with an excitable performance from the legendary Roky Erickson. However, the highlight for me, and undoubtedly many others, was the surprise indie cult hero jamboree between Breshear, The Phantom Family Halo, and one Will Oldham (see the video below). It was that exact moment that sparked this new four-song, vinyl-only collaboration between Bonnie Prince Billy and the aforementioned amazing gritty space pioneers [...]
![[Photos] Lightning Bolt with Natives and Ed Shrader's Music Beat – Cahoots, Louisville – 4.24.11](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3418110_lg.jpg)
There's not much that can be said about the live experience of Lightning Bolt that hasn't been said before, or at least that I haven't already expressed. You can scope my review of their Southgate House show last summer. Look... they're pros. Shit is Biblical... and not New Testament Biblical. There's just nothing out there comparable to Lightning Bolt live. So there you go. With that said, a couple of notes. Louisville's quite infamous dive Cahoots actually turned out to be a decent venue for this type of show, despite the naysaying. Of [...]

Where interstellar psychedelic vibrations and down to earth, folks-next-door twee pop meet - you'll find the Denver-based upstart Vitamins . Amalgamating apache rhythms with upbeat synth hooks, crafty dream pop flavors, and a classic college radio vibe, Vitamins are influenced by and reminiscent of every poppy-yet-kinda-out-there artist from the '90s and early aughts you love (or at least should love). The Vaselines and Stereolab are obvious reference points, but these guys aren't hacks. Their new 73 offers up intriguing sonic shifts and smart, original songwriting. Have a listen to the fuckin' crucial space pop of "No Notion [...]
![[Interview] Psychedelic Horseshit](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3414635_lg.jpg)
This interview with Psychedelic Horseshit originally appeared on Altered Zones last week. Below is the unedited, director's cut of the conversation, with bonus features and shit: The ethos of Columbus, OH's Psychedelic Horseshit is self-evident - write great songs, record with what you have, don't take yourself too seriously. The band formed concurrently with hometown contemporaries Times New Viking in 2005. It was here where " shitgaze " was born - a form of wall-of-sound pop that utilizes antiquated home recording equipment, resulting in accessible songs washed in grating, treble-heavy [...]
