Pitchfork’s Official SXSW Showcase Featuring Savages, Sky Ferreira, Zebra Katz, Ryan Hemsworth, Disclosure & Rustie With one of the best curated lineups during SXSW, for whatever reason Pitchfork’s official SXSW showcase at 1100 Warehouse was bare for the whole night. I almost didn’t go because I figured it’d be a shit-scene, but to my delight I was able to charge my phone and sprawl out on the couches in the venue. Good for us, bad for all of you who missed out! The first band I caught was Savages who have officially become one [...]

All Eyes on MØ Live at Hype Hotel - SXSW 2013 One of my favorites to emerge from SXSW is Copenhagen’s MØ . 24-year-old Karen Marie Ørsted emerged onstage barefoot for the set, delivering a non-stop soulful dance performance over an electronic backdrop. With just a handful of songs floating around on the internet, I am anxious to hear more from MØ soon! More pictures from the set can be here along with some of Vacationer.
Austra Live at Hype Hotel and Brooklyn Vegan for SXSW 2013 + Video After many missed opportunities I finally got the chance to see Austra , not once but twice during SXSW. For the band’s Hype Hotel performance curated by I Guess I’m Floating and YVYNL , a moodier and more formal approach (long dresses and skirts) was taken onstage under the venue’s dazzling lights. In contrast, the band dressed down for Brooklyn Vegan’s daytime outdoor performance at The Main. L [...]
[Video] Crowd Surfing with Wavves at Viceland for SXSW 2013 Wavves fittingly played alongside Japandroids, Divine Fits, and Team Spirit for Jansport’s Bands and a Bonfire Under the Big Sky at Viceland on Tuesday March 12th during SXSW. The Nathan Williams-fronted band debuted songs from their fourth studio album Afraid Of Heights , which was released later that month on March 26th. As expected, their live set inspired throngs of crowd surfing to the dismay of heavy handed security, whom Williams encouraged to chill out. Afraid of [...]
Watch Cat Power Debut ‘Bully’ on Jools Holland + ‘Manhattan’ Jimmy Fallon Performance and Video Cat Power looks and sounds healthier and stronger since I saw her perform last fall at Hammerstein Ballroom . Yesterday she debuted an amazing new bonus track from 2012’s masterful Sun (available now on iTunes) on the heels of releasing the video for Manhattan . Check out videos from her Jools Holland performance of Bully, [...]
CHVRCHES at Fader Fort and Hype Hotel for SXSW 2013 CHVRCHES played the opening slot on the bill at Fader Fort on Thursday in Austin, one of their many sets during SXSW Music. I actually ended seeing them again immediately after at Hype Hotel for I Guess I’m Floating and YVYNYL ’s tightly curated lineup. The adorable Scottish trio was one of the most buzzed about bands this year, and suitably were honored the SXSW 2013 Grulke Prize Winner for [...]
WATCH: A Hauntingly Intense Performance by Majical Cloudz a t The Mohawk + ‘Childhoods End’ Clip The last time I planned to see Majical Cloudz Hurricane Sandy hit New York, consequently cancelling their show with Grimes at The Music Hall of Williamsburg. That said, their intimate basement performance at the Mohawk on the last night of SXSW was especially climatic. Devon Welsh’s deeply affecting stage presence and voice filled the packed room, backed by a contrasting mix of feedback, electronic beats, and distortion from Matthew Otto. Their [...]
Delorean Debuted New Music at Opening and Closing SXSW Sets (Fader Fort and True Panther) It was nearly three years since I’d seen them perform live, so Delorean were one of my top bands to see at SXSW this year. They actually ended up being the first and last band I saw during SXSW music. T he Fader Fort gig on Tuesday, March 12th (technically a preview to SXSW music) was a private event co-sponsored by Dell with a very sparse crowd for Delorean’s opening set. It was like a private show for the very [...]
Stream Charli XCX’s ‘What I Like’ + Performance at Club de Ville for SXSW 2013 Earlier this month Charli XCX played a whirlwind of gigs in Austin for SXSW, one of which was a late night gig at Club de Ville that I attended. Last year I caught one of Charli XCX’s very first New York City gigs (which coincidentally took place during SXSW), and the growth in her live performance and music since then is immense. I’d actually planned to take my friend to see see her again at ASOS’s music [...]
