The Droids -The Force
Amazing. This is what Daft Punk's live performance would look like on a Doctor Who budget circa 1978.

Constructivism

Naum Gabo are one James Savage, and also one Jonnie Wilkes, who happens to be one half of the legendary Optimo , who have been running their club in Glasgow for many years, and will undoubtedly still be going long after many of the fly by nights have dropped off the radar. If you were to do a search for Naum Gabo you would find information relating to a 20th century Russian Constructivist sculptor. Obviously this is not the Naum Gabo responsible for this remix of Californian artist Michoacan , who has a sound somewhere [...]

Look to the stars...

Anyone who is a regular listener to Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space may have noticed a new DFA act going by the name of Black Meteoric Star hiding in some of his playlists. The first time I heard Black Meteoric Star I literally freaked out - imagine if you will the sound of classic acid house with the raw fuzz of cosmic psychedelia, channeled through a brutality that sounds like Vitalic at his best. Now imagine that Black Meteoric Star is in fact Gavin Russom, one half of Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom [...]

Ghost post

Michigan based label Ghostly International , and their sister imprint, Spectral Sound are responsible for releasing some really impressive music. One of their most recent releases, the new album from Spectral artist Osborne , has been on repeat for the last few days for me. Osborne's eponymous debut album is sublime - there really is no other way of putting it. It takes in the last 30 years of North American dance music and reconstitutes it without coming across as an exercise in pastiche - a stunning achievement. Osborne's sound is just [...]

Half an edit

A blog well worth your time is alainfinkielkrautrock , official blog of French record "selectors" Dirty Sound System . Dirty have been reprinting standard versions and reedits of obscure tracks for a few years now, many of them edited by the brilliant Pilooski , most notable for his superb edit of Frankie Valli's Beggin' from last year. Most of these edits are ultra difficult to get hold of, being limited to vinyl presses of 1000, with no reprints. Of course, thanks to the internet, these superb edits can be found if you know [...]

Take a chance...

As music blogs don't always have to be about illegally giving away mp3s, today I post a link to a MySpace page so that you can stream some new music for your listening pleasure. The page in question is for Stickydisc Recordings , founded by DFA engineer Eric Broucek, who goes by the alias Babytalk. The first Babytalk release, Keep On Move , was featured on James Murphy and Pat Mahoney's Fabriclive. 36 mix from last year, and now Stickydisc are preparing for the release of [...]

Autumn leaves

Last night I achieved one of my life's goals and saw Jens Lekman play live. His performance was as much an expression of joy as I could have ever expected from a man who writes such wonderful lyrics. And my night was made perfect when he played this, my favourite of his songs, a song that captures those moments of misunderstanding that occur between people of the opposite sex when one hears what they want to hear. A song, I thought as I watched him and his superb band perform it, that [...]

Impressionism

So this is the last of my Ewan Pearson themed posts, which focuses on one of his recent production efforts. Before I get to the music however, I'm going to talk about art, or more specifically, impressionism. Impressionism was a 19th Century art movement that focused on recreating the overall effect, rather than the object itself. Paintings would be done from memory, and the finished product would be vivid in light and colour, using thick brush strokes that eschewed the fine detail of the previous generations of artists. M83's new album, Saturdays = [...]

Proselytize For Al

When I started this blog, part of the aim was to post material or artists that may have been overlooked for whatever reason, something that I have been neglecting a little. In the wake of the last post on Ewan Pearson and Al Usher I focus today on Usher, who last year released his Gnanfou EP , featuring the incredible "Here Today". However, prior to this he had released only one other EP, way back in 2003. Al Usher - Disobbedisco This track [...]

Enthusiasm

As I've been listening to a lot of their stuff recently, today is going to be the first of a few days of Ewan Pearson and Al Usher related posts. For those who don't know (of which there are criminally quite a lot) Ewan Pearson has been making music and DJing for over 10 years. He is also an extremely talented producer, published author and consummate tastemaker, and has made some of the best mix CDs I've ever heard in both his recent Fabric 35 mix, and his older [...]

Anniversary

So today marks the first anniversary of Urlaubshits. I made the decision about a month ago to update this blog more regularly than I had been, and give it a bit of a redesign, mainly thanks to some kind words from someone in Australia who had happened across my blog through my Last.fm profile page . Thanks whoever you are, you were the one who made me realise that it was all worth it somehow, even when you're not listed on the Hype Machine , which I'm not. The Hype Machine is both the mp3 blogger's blessing and [...]

Where is the humanity?

After a Saturday night in which my soul was sucked almost totally dry in a humid warehouse, by music completely lacking in any kind of heart, and creating only the compulsion to dance out of nothing but an attempt to have some fun no matter what the cost, I found myself a hollowed out imitation of a human being, making the early morning journey out of the bowels of east London wishing, just wishing, that I could hear something in these places with a single shred of common humanity. The next day was spent recuperating to the new [...]

You know the pictures. You've sent them on all the blogs, the pictures that may as well be randomly plucked from one of those club photography sites that seem to serve no purpose apart from to make well dressed people feel even more great about themselves – the pictures that are saturated with colour and filled with impossibly good looking yet demure young women that make you think "this is where I want to be, everyone is having so much fun". The reality of these places is much different. These pictures present us with an idealised fantasy of what going [...]

Lunacism

I still remain to be totally convinced by the latest sensations Late Of The Pier , but I do quite like their new single "The Bears Are Coming", and they do have an energy and sense of fun to their music that is to commended in this day and age, an energy that this remix by Joakim manages to harness perfectly. Late Of The Pier – The Bears Are Coming (Joakim Remix) Joakim always manages to make a track seem fresh without losing the essence [...]

Melodicism

I'll never forget the first time I heard "Aeroplane" by Aeroplane – it was listening to Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas ' Radio 1 Essential Mix from last May (find and download if you can, its phenomenal), and as a result I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks. Aeroplane specialise in slow, colourful, italo influenced disco house, but when you really listen to Aeroplane's music, it becomes apparent how ridiculous it is. It often verges on being completely overproduced – everything is saturated in reverb, flangers are [...]

KILLING SPREE (Censored Version)
I'm going to see the Chromatics tonight. I'm very excited. Here is a wonderful video for their song "The Killing Spree" by their producer and band member Johnny Jewel - I'll let the amazing cinematography do the talking...

Seaside Miserablism

I went to Durrr on Monday night, not something I do often as it ends up with me spending about 20 quid on Red Bull and gin and tonics, but it's usually fun when I do go despite probably being too old and not dressed interestingly enough to be there. As I was entering the club I heard this song playing. These New Puritans – Elvis I'd been meaning to write about These New Puritans since I first heard their album a [...]

Romanticism

I've read a lot of Romantic poetry in my time. Some I loved, some not so much. Keats and Byron were always favourites, Wordsworth less so. But as an embittered cynic who has always preferred breathing in the toxic air of the city to being anywhere remotely near the countryside, beautiful isn't really an adjective I like to use; I find it hard to use without it seeming trite or insincere. In the case of this artist however, I find myself unable to find any other word to describe his music. Kelley Polar – [...]

Stereophony

Stereo Image are Johnny Dark and San Serac; Dark was a founder member of Junior Boys (he left before the first album, Last Exit, was written and released) along with Jeremy Greenspan, so its no surprise that Stereo Image sound much like the band that ultimately spawned them. Its always going to be hard in this situation not to draw comparisons, but when the comparison is Junior Boys, then I think any comparison you can draw can only be a good thing. Stereo Image – Dark Chapter [...]

That Track

So apparently it's all about "big" music at the moment, and how much discomfort you can cause your unsuspecting fans in the name of what's deemed to be fashionable. Maybe I'm just getting older, but no amount of alcohol, stimulants or drugs could possibly make this music in any way palatable to my sensibilities. As far as I can discern, this move towards using nothing but buzzsaw synths is all part of the Justice effect, but people seem to be forgetting that Justice are, and always have been, all about disco, their more abrasive elements being used in [...]
