AWOLNATION - Sail

AWOLNATION - Sail I know, I know. I'm posting another Billboard song. This is a habit I have to stop and look, I can't tell you exactly why I love Sail, I just do. While I'm not as a big fan of AWOLNATION's other stuff: this song is perfection. It balances a sweetness in harmony and clapping with the harsh hoarseness of leader singer, Aaron Bruno's voice. The lyrics are simple but evocative. And then there's this hint of synth that I love. Sail has a grittiness a lot of rock music is missing these days. Dammit, there's even a [...]

De La Montaña - "Money Hungry Astronauts"

De La Montaña - " Money Hungry Astronauts " De La Montaña is the brainchild of Madison Velding-VanDam, an Ann Arbor, MI-native whose move to Santiago, Chile inspired his debut album, Postmodern Whirled . It's a textured collection of songs, fusing the analog and digital with an almost math-like rhythmic layout. Madison's lyrics are poignant but subtle, never preachy, often reconciling the contradictions inherent in everyday travels. "Money Hungry Astronauts" is a standout track, one that takes hold when the throbbing bassline hits your chest (you've [...]

Sissy & The Blisters - We Are The Others

Sissy & The Blisters - We Are The Others I don't know how to appropriately describe Sissy & The Blisters, a three part English, one part Australian group, but I'm going to try. They're like…garage pop that's been fed a heavy diet of The Stroke, 1977 and on punk and The Doors. There's palpable energy in James Geard's voice that makes you shake your head to the beat of this song. Formed in 2009, they've already got a great, cohesive sound that's heavy on the drums and guitar [...]

Milo Greene - 1957

Milo Greene - 1957 Bon Iver and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have ushered us back into an era of soothing tunes where folk is no longer a dirty word. Milo Greene is a triple threat stepping onto the scene with perfect harmonies, strategically placed tambourines jingles and poetic lyrics. Their symphonious chemistry makes it hard to believe they've been a band for under a year. Their mellow sound reminds me of a moment at dusk that is warm and inviting. I had a very hard time deciding which song of theirs to post; [...]

Beirut - East Harlem

Beirut - East Harlem It's unlikely that by writing this post, I'm introducing many of you to Beirut or even this track. Zach Condon's band has an already established reputation. It doesn't hurt that Condon's voice is immediately recognizable. I've now listened to the whole album three times through and it feels like a long-overdue homecoming. I love the way in which every sound feels the same and envelopes you but you also know that it's all different and new.

Thundercat - "Daylight"

Thundercat - " Daylight " Out today on Brainfeeder , the uber-dope, uber-cool Thundercat has released his solo debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse . I'm already counting this as a favorite of 2011. He's played bass for Erykah Badu , Flying Lotus , and Shafiq in addition to bass duties in the L.A. thrash metal outfit Suicidal Tendencies. But judging by the progressive, spaced-out awesomeness of Golden Age, it's pretty clear that Thundercat is more than ready to foray out as a solo artist. He's [...]

Summer Reading

Okay, okay, summer is winding to a close and this post is overdue but us tuneage folks have been busy! Sort of. I, intentionally, spent this summer reading a lot of biographies and memoirs by musicians and figured I'd give out a few recommendations to fellow music lovers. While I read some works by less well known artists (such as A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley by Jeff Apter. But I feel that when you have a basic grasp of someone's career and their image, the biography is much more enjoyable. The following are the ones [...]

Foster the People - Pumped up Kicks

Foster the People - Pumped up Kicks It isn't very typical of tuneage to feature a song from the Billboard charts but Foster the People isn't a typical band. Sources say their emergences into fame is thanks to websites like Hype Machine , which, granted, has helped the trio keep a pretty level head about their meteoric year. It also doesn't hurt the band members grew up doing a lot of charity, like building homes in Haiti and helping orphanages in Mexico. Still, despite their do-gooder attitude, Foster the People further prove the point that with a catchy, [...]

Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel

Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel 34 years ago today, Elvis Presley died. We here at tuneage don't think there's much more to say than what's already been said. Let's just enjoy the music.

Paul McCartney and Wings - "Jet"

Paul McCartney and Wings - " Jet " I heard this song on the radio a few weeks ago, and at first I thought it was a post-millenial pastiche: Equal parts power and pop, dense guitar distortion, some very fun shouts— Jet! — and that commanding if campy saxophone line. Turns out the song is vintage Paul McCartney circa 1973, and "Jet" is the name of a pony he once owned. Magnificent!
