LARRY HEARD :: ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN THE 80s Many rumors are circulated about Larry Heard — the man who put the 'deep' in house music. Doing his "research," he met up with vocalist Robert Owens, with whom he formed the infamous Fingers Inc. This self-proclaimed "late bloomer" has stayed spiritual, soulful, and productive. Can you feel it? Lecture: Larry Heard (Seattle 2005) from Red Bull Music Academy on [...]

C.B. OVERTON :: 70s CROSS OVER FUNK

C.B. OVERTON :: 70s CROSS OVER FUNK Killer cross over Funk tune from C.B. Overton. Superstar Lady is the tune on this 45 on SHOCK record. It's rare I get a chance to play this tune, but recently I've noticed people respecting the 70s genre and straying from the Bee Gee's Disco stereotype. Some of the best music came out this year, but fell through the cracks with major success much like music today. Enjoy this tune C.B. OVERTON - SUPERSTAR LADY

RONNIE McNEIR :: SYNTH PIONEER

RONNIE McNEIR :: SYNTH PIONEER One of the most underrated synth pioneers in soul/pop music is Ronnie McNeir. McNeir conceived a highly individualistic approach to music synthesis over the course of three albums and one EP. Hyperkentic (broken chord) jazzy synth-bass lines, churchy organ, multi-note piano chords, and sinewy high and mid-range ARP solo lines weave in and out of the mix while McNeir supplied all the vocals and acoustic drums. McNeir's tools for this aural wizardry were acoustic piano, melodica, the ARP 2000 and ARP Rhapsody synthesizers, and an organ rhythm box he dubbed "Mister Ed." Besides soul music fans and steppers, many albums [...]
