The theme this time around is driving beats. I feel like this mix leaves me battered and bruised in the end but feeling good from all the crazy dancing I'm doing around my living room. When I first heard this distorted-noise-rock I thought it was awful but it has grown on me and reminds [...] [[ This is a content summary only. This mix seems to be a little on the down-tempo side for me. Not quite as rockin' as some of them. Might be my mood due to all the rain. More focused on simple, pretty songs. And the 60's inspired surf rock is probably me looking forward to warmer days. Enjoy. Trap Doors... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
No real theme this week so I'll just say, here is a mix from me to you. Hope you like it. Crazy by The Pack A.D. From: Vancouver, Canada Album: We Kill Computers Heavy White Stripes influences, this female duo knows how to mix blues and rock. This will be their 3rd studio... [[ This is a content summary only. I felt my title was a bit boring so I'm trying to think of something else I should call my mixes. 'MYSBLT mixes' doesn't quite roll of the tongue. I'm open to suggestions if you're willing to share some ideas in the comments section. This week has probably the most repeats for me since I started this. Three of the bands below I have had on previous mixes. If you didn't like them the first time around, maybe you'll hear something different this time. Enjoy. [...]

Photo borrowed from Claudia Kay Photography Apparently I should dedicate this mix to Brooklyn. Eight out of ten songs has something to do with this petri dish for indie music. My apologies for a couple of harsh transitions this week. I just had to put these three songs in the front because I think they are all really good and then I ended up with some things tacked on the end because I wasn't sure where to put them. That doesn't make them any less great. [...]
I just had to share this even if it is a year old. PostSecret is one of my favorite online projects. The song you hear is "Shhh" from a band called Donora out of Pittsburgh. You can download the song below as well as "I Think I Like You" from the same band. Donora - Shhh Donora - I Think I Like You Related posts: Mixtape Vol. 19
Comic borrowed from xkcd Happy Singles Awareness Day or SAD. My friend Arlie just informed me of this rather appropriate name for the fake holiday made-up by greeting card companies. It seems like people celebrate it either on or one day near the 14th. Not all of the songs in this week's mix fit the theme, but a few do. Hope you enjoy. Don't Do It by Salvador Santana From: [...]

Illustration borrowed from barkingbirdart I may not be consistent but I'm not giving up! The whole daily/single song post thing just didn't work for me. There are plenty of people already doing that and doing it way better than me. The mixtape format just suits me better. In an effort to make it a little less time consuming I'm just using the Yahoo media player. You can play the songs individually but it will also just play [...]

I already broke the chain and missed a post yesterday. Doh! In an effort to make up, maybe I'll post an extra one this weekend...or maybe I'll change my plan and only post on weekdays so last weekend's posts were extras. if you always move the bar, you are always right. I first heard of The xx thanks to my usual source of new music over the past year. I didn't really listen to them much until they started showing up on all of the "best of" lists this past month. [...]

I don't really have a lot to say about this particular song or band. I've liked Spoon for awhile now and think they just release really good music. I know there are debates going on about their last few albums and if the band has changed. Ultimately, I think Spoon does a great job of exploring their own distinctive sound and sometimes it is more accessible, sometimes more pop-like, and sometimes more experimental. But no matter what, they are producing good music. On top of that, Britt Daniel's vocals are distinctive and even I [...]

I saw this movie with my dear friend, Lani when it was playing in the theaters and really enjoyed it. There were mixed reviews floating around and even I was skeptical that a children's picture-book with less than 50 pages could be made into a feature-length film. However, I have enjoyed Spike Jonze's work on many , many occasions and was impressed from what I saw in the trailers as far as costumes and design. Then I saw an interview where Jonze claimed that he tapped into [...]

I don't know if July Flames even come from Georgia but for some reason Colbert was the first person I thought of when I heard that Laura Veirs ' new album is named after a peach. I discovered this new release thanks to the NPR: Music Podcast . I'm a sucker for female singer/songwriters with melodic voices, so I really didn't stand a chance. You won't be disappointed if you give the whole LP a listen. Simply put, it's beautiful, but Laura [...]
I tremble They're gonna eat me alive If I stumble They're gonna eat me alive Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer? Beating like a hammer? Metric - Help I'm Alive I first discovered Metric on a Jet Blue flight to Boston. Some channel I stumbled across had a live performance of theirs on and I recall seeing this hot chick wailing away on a keyboard. It's probably the closest I've ever been [...]
I'll just apologize ahead of time for the snobbishness of what I'm about to type... About two blocks from where I work is an old Sears building. It's a giant, blocky building with a sign that lights up at night beckoning the non-existent late night shoppers in downtown Oakland. Upon entering this monstrous two story structure a wave of sadness washes over you due to the yellow fluorescent lighting and the sound of the employee's dreams being crushed. I have no clue how it stays in business. I needed to stop inside this [...]

Last July I finally made it over to Yosemite in order to hike to the top of Half Dome. Liz let me borrow her car so I could make the three hour drive with Jim. For some odd reason, Jim didn't want to ride as a passenger on the back of my motorcycle. It just so happened that Liz left Phoenix's latest LP, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, in her CD player. Jim and I just left it on repeat in the [...]

So what will we call the type of music that comes after this? I mean, something will be inspired by this sound. Just cracks me up. I came across this band thanks to nytimes.com podcast , Music Popcast. I usually end up fast forwarding through 90% of this broadcast but sometimes the 10% is worth it. London based band, Micachu & The Shapes , released their debut CD, Jewellery , in early '09 to mostly rave reviews. [...]

I just came to the conclusion that the Finn Riggins have some sort of cosmic affect on my buddy Jim. See, it was March of last year that Jim first told me about this band because he had recently seen them live. One week later, Jim moved from Idaho back down to the Bay Area. Fast forward to today and my friend is moving to Chicago tomorrow and guess what he sent me just yesterday. This little gem: Based on this information, I've decided that I [...]

This song has been orbiting around my atmosphere for awhile now. I recall Liz posting it and telling me how obsessed she was with it. For her it was inspirational and suddenly she wanted to make a movie or create something. Then I saw them on Letterman and enjoyed the energy they brought to the live performance. They looked a bit out of place on Letterman, but obviously the exposure was good for them. A month or two later I got a call from Amy asking if [...]
I've discovered that the good thing about taking a year off from doing my blog is that I have an entire year of past music to pick from. On top of that, I'm starting up again right when everyone is releasing their "Best of" lists. Makes it almost too easy. But to prove I'm not just slacking off over here I'm going to mention a band that doesn't even have a debut CD...yet. This also gives me an opportunity to mention All Songs Considered . You might have seen that blog listed over [...]
