SF Mixtape Society hosts "Under The Covers" at the Make-Out Room It's never too soon for another SF Mixtape Society gathering. Fortunately, the wait ends this Sunday, February 12th, when the eighth installment goes down at the Make-Out Room (4-6pm, free) featuring the Valentine's-appropriate theme of "Under The Covers." New to this? Here's how it works... Gather what you think to be the most appropriate collection of tunes representing your interpretation of Under The Covers (any format is accepted: USB, CDR, cassette, etc). Submit the track listing to SFMTS and bring a copy of the mix with you to the event. Each mix [...]

Review & Photos: Laura Gibson, Breathe Owl Breathe, Morgan Manifacier @ Bottom of the Hill, 2/6/12

Review & Photos: Laura Gibson, Breathe Owl Breathe, Morgan Manifacier @ Bottom of the Hill, 2/6/12 The light persistent rain couldn't keep San Francisco's damp masses from huddling together for a night of varied folksters at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th. The evening starter, Oakland's very own singer/songwriter Morgan Manifacier , was accompanied by a celloist. Both were seated, but that did not stop an enthusiastic crowd from gobbling them up. I do suspect a few ringer audience members were in attendance, as the activity near the front of the stage threatened to shake free a couple of ceiling tiles. Manifacier's sound is reminiscent of everyone's favorite [...]

Review: Sonny Smith "Sees All Knows All" with Tim Cohen, Sunfoot

Review: Sonny Smith "Sees All Knows All" with Tim Cohen, Sunfoot When Tim Cohen took the stage at The Lost Church sans any of his usual suspects on February 4th, he informed us that he'd be playing three songs, which could have left us wanting more — in terms of time, anyway — if they'd been of The Fresh & Onlys' short-garage-pop-song variety. But enough hypothesizing: he didn't, and they weren't. Rather, Cohen played each of the tracks off his latest record with the Magic Trick , The Glad Birth of Love . Anyone familiar with the [...]

Win a copy of MERCH's 'This Betrayal Will Be Our End'

Win a copy of MERCH's 'This Betrayal Will Be Our End' On January 31st local rockers MERCH released This Betrayal Will Be Our End on SF's Sassafras Records . This marks the band's second release and first on the North Beach label/distributor. The brainchild of Joe Medina, MERCH began some years ago as a chaotic and confusing project - evidenced by anything-goes live performances and a number of different members. It was the collapse of a seven year relationship that spawned the focus and drive for Medina to pen This Betrayal , an album taking roughly two years to [...]

Dirty Ghosts – "Ropes That Way"

Dirty Ghosts – "Ropes That Way" Dirty Ghosts - "Ropes That Way" Like dirty ghosts, Allyson Baker and Carson Binks, two Toronto expats, rose from the ashes of their old San Francisco-based band Parchemnt Farm and formed Dirty Ghosts in 2006, a stripped down form of gritty garage and psychedelia with drum loop-y programming by hip-hop recording artist and producer - and Baker's husband - Aseop Rock. After looking for a singer with no luck, Baker finally and reluctantly said "fuck it" and has since added vocalist to her resume. But when she lost Binks in 2011 to Oakland stoner [...]

Night Genes' CD release party: Wednesday, 2/8, with Tidelands and Yesway San Francisco folk outfit Night Genes will be having their CD release party at Café Du Nord this Wednesday, February 8th, in celebration of their sophomore effort. Like the Blood follows their 2009 debut, Two Phantoms & A Holy Ghost . The band claims the new record "moves past mortality into rebirth, inquiring into the idea of evolution and progress from one generation to the next." We think Boise native Eric Ingersoll's baritone sounds a bit more Matt Berninger than Bill Callahan on the latest. [...]
