Oh, Steve

Oh, Steve \n With every track on here, especially when I veer into deep house territory, it's important for me to post something vibrant. It's a tough balancing act sometimes to stock up on interesting tunes, but I think it's well worth it. A beautiful example of how to create a deep house track that doesn't become stale is Steve Oh 's Work Dat Shit . Released on the Fred P -curated Earth Tones compilation, Work Dat Shit takes a foundation of deep bass and adds layers of offbeat percussion and [...]

Masturjakor

Masturjakor DJ Sprinkles - Masturjakor (Kink & Neville Watson Remix) [See post to listen to audio] I'm sick today. I'll try to avoid turning this into a diary of my well-being, but I need to post something that is easy on the ears while politely telling me to get out of bed at the same time. Had I chosen just to stay in, an obvious choice of soundtrack would be DJ Sprinkles ' Midnight 120 Blues. We need a little more drive, though. To provide that drive, here's a remix by Kink [...]

Serged

Serged Just when you thought dubstep couldn't space out any more, FaltyDL shakes up your expectations. It's not so much an exploration into what dubstep may sound like if classic themes like melody and rhythm were abandoned (think Beacon ). Rather, it's an even deeper journey deep into the bowel of dubstep (sorry, I had to do that) and its various influences. FaltyDL's remix of Serged starts off as straight-forward dubstep along the lines of his XX remix , albeit with a more reserved sound. From there, things get [...]

If u want me

If u want me Deadboy - If U Want Me [See post to listen to audio] With so much time to build up hype from the initial DJ plugs to the time the record actually drops, the tracks we fall in love with at first sight face a serious challenge. Will they stack up once the first hype fades off and the record has to stand on its own legs? With the numerous 'exclusive' stamps and teasing tweets, we, as listeners with no special acces, have to deal with the waiting-time and possibly fading interest. [...]

The game

The game Jayson Brothers - The Game [See post to listen to audio] I've been holding on to this jam, waiting for just the right moment to share it with you guys. I figured that this friday, which has turned out to mark the first real weekend of spring, would be the perfect chance to finally let it go. The name Jayson Brothers didn't ring a bell at first, but a quick search on the mighty internet (as well as a faint memory of the track in a Sunday Best mix) led me to realize [...]

I might be

I might be Todd Edwards - I Might Be (MJ Cole Remix) [See post to listen to audio] I love Joy Orbison as much as the next guy, but when he is out-remixed you have to acknowledge it. My initial excitement when I saw his name on the remix package for Todd Edwards ' I Might Be wasn't lessened by the fact that his remix was spot-on. Listening to the rest of the package, however, it was obvious that his remix faced competition this time. MJ Cole , who [...]

Next level

Next level Jus Ed sings? You already knew that he produced and released some of the finest house music through the Underground Quality label. I don't think anyone knew that he had vocals in him, though. When I'm Comin' By opens up his second full-length those very vocals may put you off. Are they simply cooler than what you can capacitate or are they way off in every way? I have yet to decide. The rest of Next Level provides plenty of straight up house sounds with little goofing around. Most tracks fit neatly into [...]

Feel so good

Feel so good The Juan Maclean - Feel So Good [See post to listen to audio] So, you're already on DFA 's roster, and you want to promote your upcoming mix in the DJ Kicks series. What do you do? Well, the most natural thing would probably be to release a nice, long disco track. If you can get over 10 minutes that would be great. Now all we need is some female vocals and we're there. I imagine that would be the recipe for every DFA hit in history. At least that's the path [...]

Tim Sweeney @ Jazzhouse

Tim Sweeney @ Jazzhouse Since I usually enjoy Beats in Space alone, my heart always skips a beat when I see that Tim Sweeney will be in town. Last time I saw him, he played to a packed crowd at the Distortion Final Party. Needless to say it was magic. This time he spun records at the newly opened nightclub at Jazzhouse, and the history of the house provided a beautiful backdrop for him to work his magic. The House of Moves night takes pride in bringing the finest disco into the Copenhagen nightlife, so it felt natural [...]

Lifeline

Lifeline My Evil Twin - Lifeline (Dub Tractor Remix) [See post to listen to audio] Describing Dub Tractor 's sound as moody doesn't really cut it. Although the sound is undeniably inspired by our Scandinavian winter melancholy and tendency towards organic electronica, there's a sense of something lighter hiding underneath the heavily programmed beats. You got a hint of that feeling when Spejderrobot remixed It All Went Wrong . This time, it's Anders Remmer himself who is behind the remix, and My Evil Twin 's Lifeline [...]

Triangulations

Triangulations A lot has happened since Scuba put out A Mutual Antipathy in 2008. For starters, his name didn't give me the same tingling feeling of heightened expectations it does now. But dubstep has evolved. Starting as a wobble-only zone, it has now become an amalgam of impressions pulling in all directions. In this sea of confusing musical navigation, Paul Rose makes the search for good quality dubstep easy through the lens his Hotflush label. Few others manage to keep a sharper focus on what's making the scene move these days, so when [...]

Uggebugg

Uggebugg Prins Thomas - Uggebugg [See post to listen to audio] I wonder how the rest of the world looks at us Danes. While several polls show that we're the happiest people on earth, our music often pulls in the opposite direction. You don't have to listen to Trentemøller or Dub Tractor for many seconds to realize that their music doesn't search for feel-good moments. If you do want some soul-stroking beats, you don't have to look far up north. Norway has become a strong player in the scene of breezy, cosmic disco. [...]

Browen

Browen If anybody can tell you about the occasional hardships of success, it's Bjørn Svin (I'm going to leave that 'ø' in just for kicks). After his track Mer' Strøm was mashed up with Danish hip hop legends Malk De Koijn by turntable-aficionados Den Sorte Skole, the track's hook now brings forward the best (and worst) from the crowd at every single teenage party around. As a result, everybody now has some predetermined opinion on Bjørn Svin. Bjørn Svin - Browen [See post to listen to [...]

Aidys Girl’s

Aidys Girl’s Darkstar - Aidys Girl's A Computer [See post to listen to audio] The last couple of days have been quite crazy, and all I've wanted to listen to was this track. There aren't many blogger street points in posting a track that was massive 6 months ago. I'm well aware of that, thank you. But it's still a good track, and with the constant pursuit of the newest and best, it's strangely rewarding to dwell for a minute. There's no better way to do that than with Darkstar's Aidys Girl's a Computer . [...]

Beacon

Beacon LV & Untold - Beacon [See post to listen to audio] My days are hectic at the moment, so my time for music-discovery is somewhat limited. Still, I do the best to catch up with the latest and greatest releases, and fortunately there's no shortage of those. Until a few minutes ago, I wanted to post the Mount Kimbie remix of LV & Untold 's latest release, Beacon . Somewhere between Play and Publish I changed my mind for no apparent reason. [...]

Tron

Tron While it's always nice to let the likes of Pangaea, Untold, and Scuba explore the outer realms of dubstep, a straight-forward approach is quite refreshing once in a while. For that job, Joker is usually my weapon of choice. By now he has released a bunch of contemporary classics and I'm eagerly awaiting his next move. A while ago, he claimed on Twitter that he was starting over. I don't know whether this release marks the finale of the old Joker or the birth of the new, but this is a strong release no [...]

Convolution

Convolution Skudge - Convolution [See post to listen to audio] The last weeks have been intensely focused on dubstep and house, so I thought you would welcome a little variation. Today, we're going techy. Convolution is way over the top. It isn't hard techno as your tank-top friends would label it, although it's intense from the very first beat. Skudge 's sound is fast and raw with little room for the vocals to take over. With their warped vowels panning back and forth, they do their best to distract you [...]

Paris is for lovers

Paris is for lovers Fet Et Moi - Paris Is For Lovers (Track 1) download [See post to listen to audio] If dubstep carves out its niche by constantly replicating itself in smaller niches, house gets a lot of its hype through ruthless edits. While that may be a truth with modifications, I think the house-edits scene provides us with some of the most exciting compositions these days. I bet you never thought you would be dancing to Bill Withers or a dirty B-52s edit in the new millenium. These [...]

Stuttgart nights

Stuttgart nights Motor City Drum Ensemble - Stuttgart Nights [See post to listen to audio] I have already written extensively about my love for Motor City Drum Ensemble ; how he dominated 2009 , how his Raw Cuts series blew my mind , and I've even featured him in a couple of mixes both from Savile and myself most recently. It's with good reason, though. Although I spend a great deal of my time digging through the crates of house music, I have not heard of anyone who [...]

Up The Aurehill

Up The Aurehill When I bought my mixing gear, I made a promise to myself that I would record something within two weeks. Although I didn't make that deadline (today is day 16), I've managed to sew together some straight-forward house for you to enjoy. I know it's a bit rough on the ears, but I'll do my best to keep improving. Feedback and criticism is of course more than welcome. Up The Aurehill by Going Other Places on Mixcloud [...]
