What drew me towards Bos Angeles, was guiltily their name, its without a doubt one of the best I've heard in awhile. They are from Boscombe, hence, Bos Angeles. Pretty neat eh? Bos Angeles play "down on your luck" beachy pop sweetness. It has that summery, beach vibe, but sulking lyrics like "please don't save me, I rather die" do bring mood down a bit. Amusement, who recently remixed Outfit's "Two Islands", are here with their latest track "Run Through The Door", a disparagingly cool burst of electro perfection. So Abeano have announced another release for this year, following on Iceage's New Brigade , in the form of Sunless '97 and their Making Waves EP. Always going to be perpetually enamored with Hard Mix but this has just sky-rocketed that love into some next stratosphere shit. Ghostly, diva vocal samples reverberate through the dank soundscape; "Stay a little while longer baby, I want to talk to you just a little bit more." Not that long after we wrote about Ricky Eat Acid for his Rihanna-sampling "Only Girl", he's cropped up here again with this beautiful and tense, slow-building collaboration with Arrange. Led by a piano part that can only conjure up some strange, confusing sense of nostalgia, that is complimented by the bass-y beats and synth sounds, that tie this to his earlier work. Embrace it. Getting a bit enraptured in the work of Winchester local boy Sam Hatchwell, who under The Joys of Sleeping moniker recently put out "A long time comin'", which is (according to his Facebook) a prelude to an upcoming debut EP. It's a relaxed, loose and sprawling track with almost mute vocals, that don't dare interfere with the music's simplistic beauty. Awaiting more with bated breath, of course. I don't care what you say, Lana Del Ray's "Video Games" was/is one of the stand out tracks of the year and this remix treatment from the arguably lesser of the three dubstep Jamies, Blake and xx are another level to be fair, channels it's titular reference more than the original (apart from the video's visual signifiers) could ever do. Her vocals, despite infrequently pitch-shifted are still as touching and coupled with a strong sense of claustrophobia, which is probably Woon's greatest achievement here, makes for an striking take on a 2k11 classic. This wonderful slow jam from L.A dream pop outfit, Datsyuk, is blissfully sweet. It's slow but hard beat pushes through the hazy synth and ambience, giving it the backbone it otherwise, might not have. The vocals drastically change the tone of the track, with lyrics like "suicide dreams fill my brain", and the ever present theme of the universe being reinforced by a Stephan Hawking sample. It definitely has the spacey vibe, not to mention a hip hop twist with the old school beat, reminding me of old chilled out electronic tracks from the 902s. Watch out for [...]
Wow. For someone still 17 years old, King Krule, formerly Zoo Kid, sure knows how to write touching, emotion driven music. His cutting lyricism and rasping, aged vocal seems to be directed at himself more than any other, a choric reprise of "I'm always to blame" sounds full of honesty, a chord of empathy struck within an instant. Self-deprecation then, nothing new, but as Archy Marshall has strung it around his undeniably charming, and impressive, music you'd be hard pressed to find fault in it. It's been a while since I wrote about my bros in run,WALK! but couldn't resist spreading the word on this extremely tight track from their upcoming split 73 with SIRS. From tense, claustrophobic beginnings, the song expands out into their usual spazzy, yet controlled, math rock battleground, with singer Matt PC's angry vocals providing a sharp and wild contrast. The subtly piercing vocal refrain of "What I want, what do I want?" echoes across this enticingly sparse remix treatment from ultra-bro Gross Magic. As he did with Discovery, and of course, Vampire Weekend before that, Rostam Batmanglij has produced a perfect slice of left-leaning, world-music inspired indie pop. The focus may have shifted onto the eastern side of the world this time round, but you still sense some kind of common familiarity throughout. The jittered, almost disconnected vocal stilts over and around the cowbell heavy backbeat in this version of Outfit's "Two Islands", remixed by Amusement. Korallreven get the remix treatment here from Girl Unit, who turns their posi-jam "As Young As Yesterday" into some kind of invigorating, dank floor-filler that my mind can barely get around before I'm dancing, shaking or just downright moving along to it.
