To quote the album title: Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we...? The idea for this came from my other gig over at #KeepingItPeel , which was set up to commemorate John Peel with a #keepingitpeel day on October 25th, but I've filled in the time between then with a series of podcasts. An idea I have for a future special edition of the #KIP podcasts, since he was a huge Liverpool fan, is for one where Peelie gives a mention to football on his show and/or any football-related tune [...]

This year the destination of the F.A Cup will be decided by YOU . We'll be taking a poll and you will chose who takes the crown. Who'll raise the first F.A Cup singoff trophy. (Don't actually have a trophy to give out at the moment, we'll use this teacup for now) I've previously wrote about both teams and the most famous song associated with them. But judging by the number of visits from people looking for information about one of them this will be [...]

"Hello! If you've just tuned in, welcome to the Eurovision Football Song Contest being held this year in sunny Helsinki. You have missed some splendid arrangements and who will forget Iceland's entry with Bjirr Stoppenmajer and his roller skating tribute to mountain climbing... Or that delightful entry from Jimmy the Jump... at least I think it was... Anyway here for you are some selected highlights..." ... Starting with Invgar 'Tjotta' Olsson, with the 1958 entry from Sweden: [See [...]

Recently the BBC have partly opened their Desert Island Discs archive . The programme has been on the radio since 1942 and has interviewed hundred of thousands of personalities. Surprisingly though they haven't featured all that many footballers . Maybe because it is Radio 4 and their audience is more rugger and croquet than that association thing. One of the two football-related podcasts they have made available is with the late great SIR BOBBY ROBSON. You can still get grab this episode [...]

I remember when we were good we were very, very good... When I say we I mean them ... ...and when I talk about them I mean this lot: Good up to a point of course, but for a moment there... Expectations were high because England were hosting their first major football tournament since 1966, football as you know, was coming home. As usual from the press, [...]

You will not recognise the well chiselled face of the young man below, but you will know his voice.... Actually let me clarify that. Not even his voice, but maybe one single word. Before I get to that word though, a quick bio about the man... The subject today is José Altafini , a Brazilian born Italian. "Altafini played for Palmeiras in Brazil, before he began his career in Italy with AC Milan [...]

You may not know of this ex-Italian international, but if you heard him speak you'd think that he was from the valleys. Which at one time he was. Giorgio Chinaglia was born in Tuscany, but because of high unemployment in Italy after World War II he and his family moved to Cardiff. It was during these formative years that he picked up a Welsh accent and a football. He began his career at Swansea and even in these early [...]

There are some international runabouts coming up soon (end of March 2011). A few of them matter, but most of them are pointless friendlies. The F.A. will be counting the cash a week on Wednesday with England hosting Nigeria at Wembley, but before they are away in a Euro 2012 qualifier away to Wales. Now going on previous results/form of both national teams England *should* walk this one... Additionally we have the sideshow of the newly anointed Gareth Bale, currently on form. But as you know one man does not make a [...]
Coming up very soon is a competition which despite the roadcrash-type performances it is something that people can't turn their eyes away. Despite everything they still have to watch. Not everybody watches, most of them don't even bother a look, but to their fans this is a chance to celebrate... to achieve some glory... Yes that's right it is the JPT Final - to be played on Sun 3rd April: Mother's Day. This cup competition (also known as the Football League Trophy ) is only open to the lower 48 league [...]

It is thanks to a couple of compadres who first mentioned these football and musical items, both of which have reached the same anniversary... The first one was from the now sadly defunct I'm Not Always So Stupid blog who originally owed and scanned the very first edition of When Saturday Comes . It was a hand crafted, lovingly put together football fanzine which eventually became the source and King of all the fanzines. WSC has now reached it's 25th anniversary and throughout those years has managed to survive Gazza, [...]

The full list of clubs Jari turned out for: Reipas, MyPa, Ajax (twice), Barcelona , Liverpool , Hansa Rostock, Malmo, Fulham and Lahti (twice). I'll begin with a big thank you to Aimo Veto , who dropped me a line to tell me about Jari Litmanen. He celebrated his 40th birthday on Feb 20th and guess what - He's still playing . But wait, that's nothing though, only the tip [...]

These journeys that I go on. I once did a post about Hibs and in that article I mentioned their links to Irvine Welsh and Trainspotting. Rebus (the TV detective) and Bilbo Baggins (the band), oh and a bit of Dusty Springfield in there too. I've just been on another trip and like with the Hibs one, I found some very unlikely bedfellows... It is all thanks to @DolphinHotel who contributes articles to In Bed With Maradona . He wrote a piece about a South Korean [...]

The sequel and concluding part to the Non-League music special. In Part One there was York City, Newport County, Mansfield Town, Wrexham, Kidderminster Harriers and Stevenage Borough. Today we are going Rock n' Roll with an appearance from The Stones ! ...err I should clarify that I don't mean Mick n' Keef and co... what I meant to actually say was: Wealdstone The club (nicknamed The Stones) are most famously [...]

I always like to write something to accompany these tunes. I like to tell you about the club, or about the occasion which has brought them (or somebody else) to record a song to (usually) commemorate the occasion. But I have a few files knocking about which isn't enough to warrant a full post, plus I spotted a connection between them. So here for you is the first part of a non-league* special. *I know that some of them are league teams now, I'm being loose [...]

After the demise of Collapsed Lung in 1998 the former members all kept busy with various projects. [Lots of links. Please take time to explore the links] Some of them were bands such as Oskar and Arndales . As well as some breakbeats with: Junior Blanks were formed in 1996 when London-based indie/hip-hop [...]

I've gone on record saying that the 902s (apart from a couple exceptions) was a shit pointless decade music-wise. But then I end up being a webbie version of 'arry Redknapp in that even though I don't rate them, I keep on playing them. This is because as much as it irritates me, the 19902s was the era when it became cool to sing about football. As we all know this all began in the early 902s when Sky invented football the Football Association approached New Order to do an [...]

With some teams you can't mention their name without the visage of their "larger than life" Chairman/Chief Exec/Big Wig looming into view, distracting everybody from the football. In most instances this is a bad thing... Because as you know if all the focus in on the chairman, it means trouble for the clubs. This is not always the case, there are some club owners/major shareholders out there who'd rather not be in the spotlight, such as Randy Learner at Villa, Ellis Short at Sunderland and Stan Kroenke at Arsenal. ...And at the other end [...]

Ah where do you start... It's not just with the recent headlines about Silvio Berlusconi , he is a subject which the Guardian could fill their entire paper . Front page with the politics, inside section about the alleged bribes. Then the business section, the gossip column and finally... the football. Before we get down and dirty with Il Cavaliere , let's give his club a mention: I really don't have to say too [...]

Recently there was an article in the Guardian in which Louise Taylor pondered whether a democracy or a benign dictatorship would benefit a club more. I'm over simplifying a bit, go and read the article yourself. But the subject of an overall power at a club is something that I'm going to cover in this series... This originally wasn't going to be a series, but after researching and gathering material about the gentleman above, I found items about some "colourful" characters who run other top top football clubs. So now we have [...]

Hopefully I'll get this post done before Charlton play their FA Cup match against Spurs. If I don't then this should have appeared before Charlton's third round exit away to... I know I shouldn't make those sort of predictions because they tend to blow up in your face, but that sort of thing happens to me anyway. Why fight it. So as mentioned this coming Sunday it is Tottenham Hotspur (currently 4th in the old 1st Division) who will be hosting Charlton Athletic (currently 5th in [...]
