During the times where your city may feel small, there are local, hidden gems emphasising the contrary like Sydney troubadour, Brian Campeau . Photo: Pepper Ingham Mostly Winter Sometimes Spring is Campeau's follow-up to his 2006 debut album, Two Faces . It is a stylistically intriguing album whereby each song was guided by the inherent abilities of a singular instrument and misused deliberately. The result is a plethora of sounds from bedroom jazz to vocal harmonies reminiscent of Simon & [...]
There is so much buzz around the Californian coast that has everyone excited, perhaps due to the inevitable resurgence of promising and established musical acts including No Age , Wavves , Abe Vigoda and Mika Miko . Two years ago, my ears were thoroughly assaulted with a self-titled album from the Californian quartet, HEALTH . Photo: Nick Helderman Typeset intended, HEALTH was how I found out about Crystal Castles believe it or not. (Remember the track "Crimewave"?) [...]

Philadelphia Grand Jury is here to provide the antidote to our mundane existence, they are here to blow our socks off and get us fit by causing mass hysteria and the burning off a tonne of calories. The cheeky trio just finished supporting Yves Klein Blue on their Ragged & Ecstatic tour and almost instantly kick-started their first headline tour, I'm Going To Kill You. Photo: Jorge Cerda-Vargas On Friday night The Philly Jays graced the stage of Spectrum and [...]

Heidi recently took some time out with Deastro 's Randolf Chabot to discuss all things past, present and future. In this exclusive interview, Chabot identifies his beliefs shaped by his friends, childhood memories and his subconscious, even revealing what a Moondagger exactly is. Photo: Jeremy Deputat TWYE: With the colonization of Mars climbing higher on the America's 'To Do' list and taking rank over Earth's own backyard, if invited, would you play the first Martian Music Festival? [...]

I embarrassingly admit, as a kid I always saved up my pennies to buy the latest pop and R&B records from bands I'd rather not discuss at present but it may explain why Discovery's latest record, LP is personally so appealing. Discovery is the project of Vampire Weekend 's Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot 's Wes Miles, and LP is the result of coincidental meetings between Batmanglij and Miles over the course of four years while on tour. Despite your preconceived [...]

Photo: Phil Sharp In the fast pace that operates our daily life, there are occasional instances that tell us to slow down. In this case, Yeah, So is an album that has surfaced and reinforces this idea of decelerating. As the latest release from English duo, Slow Club , Yeah, So is determined to thrust you into that lower gear. From the outset with "When I Go" you sense the relaxed atmosphere as presented through Charles Watson's solitary guitar work and the luscious harmonies exchanged between Watson and Rebecca Taylor. Subsequent to [...]

Photo: Cybele Malinowski Yves Klein Blue have just released their debut album Ragged & Ecstatic - an unpredictable, 12-track composition of wailing vocals and a diversity of instruments; the album definitely exhibits the versatility of the Brisbane quartet captured under the bright lights of Hollywood. The opening track "Make Up Your Mind" was a struggle however the preceding track "Getting Wise" with it's catchy melody is definitely a track where you bust out the air guitar piano. "Digital Love" feels dark but that's what I like about it - [...]

Photo: Austin Warnock I can feel my ears buzzing with joy again because Brooklyn trio, Vivian Girls are touring Australia for the first time brought to you by the lovely folks at Mistletone . Photo: Magnus Magnusson I wished I had picked it up sooner. There on my table lay Miike Snow's self-titled release for weeks. I admit the odd cover (complete with an assumed spelling error) repelled any urge to give it a play and I am caught out judging a book cd by it's cover - forgive me Miike Snow , I wished I didn't. Swedes, Christian Karlsson and Ponuts Winnberg, together with American Andrew Wyatt are the brains behind Miike Snow (yes, two I's). The trio has had their fair share [...]

Avant-pop may just be another superfluous genre you may brush off. As ridiculous or pretentious as it may sound, if you have listened to any records from the School of Seven Bells , The Chap , or even Dan Deacon , you would've already dabbled with the sub-genre. However, you can add one more worthy album to that collection: Deastro's Moondagger . A great beginners guide to avant-pop, Moondagger encapsulates a cosmic sensibility through his electronic narratives and textures. As 22-year-old Randolph Chabot's moniker, Daestro no doubt has an exciting future ahead [...]

Atlanta's Deerhunter capped their Australian tour with an unpredictable show at the Annandale hotel last night. Plagued with technical issues, their final show was not without hurdles. For singer, Bradford Cox, it may have displaced him a little during the opener "Cryptograms" but Deerhunter soon found their rhythm. The set juggled between Cryptograms and Microcastle with the occasional request from the sold-out crowd. Together with the awkward banter from Cox, it proved to be an interesting yet convincing [...]

I've been flooded with new music from some of our (and maybe, your) favourite locals. Photo: Pamela Amores Firstly, legendary Sydney group Decoder Ring are just about to release their fourth LP, They Bind The Stars, And The Wild Team . Over five years, They Bind ... sees the end of the journey initiating from scoring the soundtrack to the film, Somersault . Exploring a new sound, expect to hear more from Decoder Ring in the following weeks but [...]

This week (and probably the next few) will be spent in absolute admiration for Bitte Orca - the latest album from the Dirty Projectors . The Brooklyn six piece has carefully crafted nine of the most boldest and independent tracks. Photo: Sarah Cass Amidst the ornate guitar work and falsettos of David Longstreth and the vocal layerings by Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian, there is clear concept no doubt present in Bitte Orca . Opening with "Cannibal Resource" (and the for [...]

It's been two years since I've seen Battles live and I thought it was an impossible feat to surpass that sold-out show at the Gaelic but wow, just wow. They did! Blowing me away even if the majority of their set was based on their successful 2007 release, Mirrored . Given the task of opening Brian Eno's Luminous festival , the Brooklyn quartet has evolved into one of the most thrilling live bands to date. Photo: Geoff Kim via iPhone [...]
Like toast without butter, Sydney without FBi radio would feel like the end of the world. Constantly introducing you to new music from home and abroad, FBi is probably the only station that leaves you saying, what's the name of that track?! Sure enough, they wont leave you hanging. Without the shitty commercialism that regulates most stations, FBi has always been the most exciting station in radio – FACT. You can even tune in now ! As a volunteer radio station since 2003 and it has seen some hard times but none more so than now. You [...]

I admit, I have obsessed about Grizzly Bear on this blog quite a bit and writing a review for Veckatimist – dubbed by Fleet Foxes frontman, Robin Pecknold as "the best record of the 00's" – is rather daunting. The latest full-length from the Brooklyn quartet has me cornered. Photo: Lane Coder Intimidating in its beauty (and hype), Veckatimist is very, very refined. Compositional arrangements are tight and the vocal harmonies exchanged are even tighter. In "Two [...]

Photo: Amy Brammall Scottish group, Dananananaykroyd (pronounced Dana-nana-naykroyd) is surely a mouthful. Maybe you can forgive them for the fact they've devised a new genre for themselves, appropriately titled "fight-pop", and it's quite self-explanatory the moment you listen to them. Consider Black Flag and Sonic Youth in a band and this would be it. After their shows at SXSW and continuously filling prominent support slots (with the Kaiser Chiefs , Foals and even with the Vivian Girls ), Dananananaykroyd, have been making some serious ground. [...]

Photo: Julia Wilson The calm after the storm is ever assured. In the case of Talons ' self-titled debut, the calm enters the moment the closing track ends and "Walking Straight Past Mona Lisa" is a relatively lengthy epilogue by punk standards. Regardless, the Sydney trio have produced one of the gutsiest albums to date. Confronting and ferocious, Talons have certainly laid it all out on the table without exhausting themselves in the process. "Dazzling Metallic Stallions" begins mindlessly weaving between pitches. It's an eerie ensemble until the sediment settles and after a minute, "Dazzling..." [...]
