New Music | Retro/Grade I have to say Retro/Grade are one of the most exciting acts around at the moment. I've seen them twice so far, both times much further down the bill than they deserved, and I have high hopes for them. Check out the trailer for Mindfighter, the visuals for which are just as trippy as their live visuals, which completely blew my mind at the Dance Koko Dance event with Alex Metric. A strong track after the incredibly unique, groundbreaking track MODA. Oh, and, it's Friday!
New Music | UK Pop Punk's Not Dead Finally. Some guitars. Introducing a fine guest post from Mark Hooson on what's hot in UK pop punk! By Mark Hooson of www.poppunkbands.co.uk Pop punk isn't a genre that has flourished in the UK as it has in the US, maybe it's the sunnier climes of Florida and California that make America a better fit for pop punk music, or maybe we Brits are too cynical - but that could be about to change thanks to a spate of [...]
New Music | Photek Aviator EP or Avalance EP? I can't work it out. Aviator, I think. According to Rcrd Lbl at least . I'll trust em. Anyway, I've been into Photek for a loooong time, ever since Modus Operandi which has kept me company boosting it down black runs in the Alps many a time. Now the St Albans boy is back and with a tasty little cross-genre number that has a little '1' next to the 'Plays' column in my iTunes and is already up on NMB. Soon to be a [...]
New Music | Friendly Fires Have to admit I went a bit off Friendly Fires, after Standon Calling 2009. Their set was essentially their debut album, played on CD through some big speakers. Which got a little dull, not that it wasn't a great album. So we sacked it off and boosted it back down to London for a house party in Clapham. Back with new album Pala, and it's a real grower. I love this mellow title track... and so shall you! HARARRRRR
New Music | Skrillex Just when you thought you'd heard every possible permutation of In For The Kill, Skrillex steps up and proves you wrong. Slightly more accessible than some of his other work, the drop is still pretty filthy and I like it.
New Music | Skrillex I'm a bit over mashups, but this is pretty good. That's about it. More from Skrillex to follow. What! I'm hungover.
New Music | Zed's Dead Zed's Dead are starting to make some waves. Nice. I love the contrast between the gentle chords and the pure pure pure filthy bassline in 1975. And good to see them getting their creative juices flowing all over the place with some original material. Not that their remixes aren't pretty groundbreaking, but you can't be a one trick pony in this day and age. Or can you? No. Maybe a bit. Probably not.
New Music | The Horrors I used to really hate The Horrors. I don't think I really knew any of their tunes, but it all sounded like a mildly irritating dribble. Then they completely changed their game and Sea Within A Sea was absolutely genius, with some live streaming situation that was pretty epic, and the album Primary Colours somehow didn't make our top 10 of the year although I'm not sure why. Now they're back after a couple of years and Still Life is pretty great. Very much looking forward to the new [...]
New Music | Tyler The Creator Not for the faint hearted. Neither's the video . Tyler The Creator will take you to a dark place you've probably only been to in a handful of dreams maybe the night before a funeral. Still, enjoy. Maybe have a glass of scotch. Or 2.
This is a guest post by Nick Lewis of independent digital distribution leaders Zimbalam. Digital distribution has allowed anyone the chance to release their record and share the same virtual shelfspace as major label artists. But with much smaller marketing budgets (if any) behind them, it can still be a struggle for independent artists to get their name out there. To help a few along, and introduce you to some choice tunes in the process, here are 3 of the best artists cherry-picked from Zimbalam's roster. [...]
New Music | MUNK Nothing like a spot of German disco. And by all accounts the new MUNK album is awesome. The kindhearted DJ/Producer is giving away new single Rue De Rome for FREE. So here it is.
New Music | Strange Talk MGMT + Passion Pit = Strange Talk. Just what the world needs. Onnnnnnnly joking. I'm just grumpy, back at work. I have a feeling Climbing Walls could be a one hit wonder, but there's no harm in that. Some of the best tunes are one hit wonders. Like Len, PaperTown, Deee-lite, Chumbawumba. Go on, disagree.
Competition time! Hooray! LED Festival this year boasts an epic lineup including some classic NMB favourites like Deadmau5 , Calvin Harris , Nero & Netsky , drum and bass legends DJ Hype, DJ Fresh, plus genre defining acts like Modestep and Skrillex with Radio 1's hot tip Jaguar Skills thrown in for good measure. We gots 2 of them tickets to Deadmau5 live in Victoria Park, London to give away! What do you need to do? Not a lot to be honest. All we want to know is which your favourite Deadmau5 [...]
New Music | Yuksek It can be a hard slog breaking into any music scene these days with so much competition out there. Thanfully Yuksek seems to be making some headway and after some awesome remixes ( like the lisztomania mix we posted a while back ) On A Train has a tasty but pretty chilled sound that will undoubtedly lead to some remixes itself. Guuci Vump have already had a go in fact .
New Music | La Roux | Alex Metric Not to go too overboard on the Alex Metric or anything, but this is a thing of electro beauty. And she's got a lovely voice hasn't she, little Ellie. I'm a little excited about tonight if you hadn't noticed. Time for some sun then time for things to get a bit out of control.
New Music | Alex Metric | Steve Angelo | Style Of Eye For anyone not lucky enough to get tickets for tonight's little adventure at Koko , unlucky. The lineup's too full on to really go into at this time in the morning so if you are home alone this evening, turn this one up and get jealous.
New Music | Deadmau5 | Baby D I'm a sucker for Baby D. We played this on repeat back in 1994 almost as much as Brimful Of Asha by Cornershop, and N-Trance, Set You Free. Now the big-red-eared man has stepped up and this is a pretty sexual remix that has gotten me all excited about LED festival this summer, featuring some big names and some new names like: Deadmau5 | Nero | Skrillex | Jaguar Skills | Netsky So obviously we'll [...]
New Music | Body Language Not going to pretend I know very little about Body Language. Although I do know a bit about body language. Girls are easier to read than you think. Boys are incredibly straightforward. Anyway, the Keep Shelly In Athens remix of You Can perfectly compliments the Madeon remix of Yelle - play them one after the other and you'll see what I mean. You Can is sort of a Que Tu Veux refrain in fact.
