[artist_profile] the orbweavers

[artist_profile] the orbweavers I caught The Orbweavers supporting Luluc and Tiny Vipers in Thornbury years ago and was impressed enough to buy their debut album ‘Graphite & Diamonds' – featuring a full band that included Paddy Mann (Grand Salvo). It’s pretty hard to resist their sweet harmonies, engaging storytelling, and folk melodies. Plus for this new release they have signed with the always awesome local label Mistletone. The album is set to be one of the highlights of 2011. Folk Yeah! [MP3] [...]

[art_remix] julian opie | nosaj thing x jon hopkins

[art_remix] julian opie | nosaj thing x jon hopkins Julian Opie, 'Rod and Verity Walking' [2010] This is the first in our new art // remix feature; combining a fresh, intriguing musical re-interpretation and an artwork the music evokes. Julian Opie is my favorite artist and fortunately caught two of his installations last year – first as the visual accompaniment to experimental composer Max Richter in London ( #13 in our best live performances of 2010 ) and then at the Shanghai Expo. So it seemed appropriate for him to be our first featured artist. Jon Hopkins is an [...]

[artist_profile] young magic

[artist_profile] young magic A few years ago Melbourne band Flamingo Crash put out an interesting 80’s inspired album, Triangle Island, and after getting a sync in a Volvo ad seem destined for good things. They popped up on shuffle the other day and was intrigued to find out what happened to them; well seems everything has gone quiet and Issac is now living in New York making (far better) music as Young Magic. His first single You In Air. / Sparkly. has just come out, and is an amazing piece of modern composition. With the best [...]

[artist_profile] last dinosaurs

[artist_profile] last dinosaurs Brisbane dudes Last Dinosaurs who were on our Next Big Thing tips back at the end of 09 have their debut album out later in the year and this will be the first single from it. ‘Time & Place’ an ode to electromagnetism pioneer Nikola Tesla. It’s fun, up-tempo indie pop that is very quick to stick but features the (slightly cringey) call and response chorus “we’re all waiting for the world to start rotating.” Having said that it’s easily their best song yet - shedding the overt influences that left their [...]

[new_release] pnau – the truth

[new_release] pnau – the truth Pnau are back after a few years away. Though they’ve kept busy since the huge success of their last album first with the Empire Of The Sun project, which both were heavily involved in and more recently the Groove Armada album which Nick co-wrote most of. As with each of their previous albums this is slightly different again; collaborating with some interesting people, including songwriters Scott Cutler and Anne Preven, perhaps best known for writing the Natalie Imbruglia hit ‘Torn’ but also assisting on the Teenager (Nick Littlemore/Ladyhawke duo) album which we featured in [...]

[artist_profile] total control

[artist_profile] total control Eddy Current Suppression Ring seem to be on a break after putting out their ‘Rush to Relax’ album last year; with a slew of great side-projects starting to come through. Brendan is off doing stuff with the awesome Boomgates, while Mikey has teamed up with Dan from (one of his many other bands) UV Race to form duo Total Control . They are slightly different in sound from their main bands; using drum machines and synths to create tight, tense new wave / post punk. Their cold [...]

[artist_profile] wim

[artist_profile] wim Sydney group WIM have just signed with kool kids Modular Records, but they aren’t writing French electro house. These guys have that classic pop/rock sound, which makes there tracks seem familiar but in no way contrived. They are smartly crafted pop songs, that bounce and pulse with so much energy they could to power a ferriswheel. Their debut record, out mid year, has been done with local Tony Buchen (Tim Finn, Lior) on production duties and go to mastering god Bob Ludwig (Bowie, Radiohead, Coldplay) brought in to give it [...]

[artist_profile] buchanan

[artist_profile] buchanan Buchanan are a Melbourne trio who make that anthemic indie pop you always here in faux-indie films starring Michael Cera or Joesph Gordon-Levitt. A couple of their early demos left me a bit disappointed as influences were bleeding through. But this new track ‘Teachers’ really impressed; there’s a sweet inflection on the vocal and structure of the track has been given a lot of consideration. It’s really great so grab it now. [...]

[artist_profile] rainbow arabia

[artist_profile] rainbow arabia Rainbow Arabia ’s track ‘Holiday In Congo’ is one of the most stupidly infectious singles to come out in the last few years. So its pretty exciting to see they have been picked up by Kompakt, the legendary German tech label, for their debut album. The album has been a long time coming with the husband & wife duo still perhaps best known for the amazing video of their 2008 track ‘Omar K’ (below). [...]

[artist_profile] magic silver white

Magic Silver White is a Melbourne supergroup of sorts; featuring members who perform as/with Qua, Mountains in the Sky, Super Melody, Sailor Days and Mononke. Led by Jojo Petrina they create pieces of minimalist pop that glide through hazy harmonies and cushiony beats. These soundscapes are beautiful, soothing and ethereal but with enough honey to keep you warm. [artist_profile] chapel club

[artist_profile] chapel club Chapel Club are yet another ‘dark’, supposed ‘post-punk’ major label English band being groomed for chart success, but don’t let there cliché marketing put you off. They really are better than the others. Sure, when they were signed some suit no doubt justified the decision by pointing to the success of the similarly styled White Lies (an anthemic Joy Division-obsessed band who are more concerned in image than substance, thus missing the irony of their existence). But Chapel Club are at least attempting to craft their own path, with a diverse range of songs and actual talent. [...]

[artist_profile] tom williams & the boat

[artist_profile] tom williams & the boat live @ bull & gate, london (sep ‘10) | image © auditor records | Tom Williams & The Boat are surely one of the more interesting (and extremely underrated) English bands around at the moment. In the depressing world of Mumford & Sons inspired faux-folk shite its nice to hear an artist with clever lyrics and a real rock edge. Tom has such an emotive voice; he’s like a sinister teddy bear – it seems all warm and friendly but there’s a dark undercurrent. As the below track suggests, they [...]

[artist_profile] peon

Peon is Sydney based electronic producer John Hassell; best known as a member of Seekae (whose debut - ‘The Sound of Trees Falling on People’ was #67 in our best albums of 2009 ) and founder of the awesome beat collective oneofour . He also put out a great album last year as ‘Vorad Fils’, which is definitely worth hunting down. Under the Peon alias he is making sample based glitch pop; his skittering beats and wonky fuzz combine with deep bass to give your head a blur burn. So good! [...]

[artist_profile] det vackra livet

[artist_profile] det vackra livet Det Vackra Livet are a side-project for the Ekström brothers from The Mary Onettes (#29 in our best live performances of 2010 ). They have just been snapped up by one of our favourite labels Labrador (also home to The Mary Onettes) and are putting out their debut LP in the first half of this year. It is very similar stylistically to their main band; reverby with processed drums only less twee and in Swedish. Can’t wait for more! [MP3] [...]

[artist_profile] no art

[artist_profile] no art Easily one of the best unsigned bands in Australia at the moment. They are so fucking good. Their debut EP is being done with Pat (Knife Machine) from Lost Valentinos; whose single ‘Man With The Gun’ from back in 2005 (when they were still The Valentinos) is still one the best examples of ‘modern’ australian post-punk. We first heard them on a New Weird Australia comp ages ago, have been following closely since – and well everything is stunning. Post-punk, dark noise and ambient scuzz … FUCK YESSS! [...]

[lists] next big things ‘11 tips (australia)

Like most other countries the breakthrough acts in australia are dictated by the new signings on the ‘indie’ labels/imprints with solid distribution networks (which in itself is a statement on major label A&R). This isn’t taking away any credit from the artists below – they deserve the support they are getting; just explaining why some smaller (perhaps in a few cases even better) bands we’ve posted about of late aren’t on this list. The tips list post is a bit of fun and simply done to reflect the current (dare we say) ‘buzz’ for international readers. Plus they make for [...]
