Each 4th Tuesday of the month, The Plums hold a residency at the Dynasty Ethiopian restaurant on 14th Street. The band plays a set themselves, and also invite a guest to open up the night. This past month, America Hearts kicked things off, playing a set of old favorites as well as introducing us to a couple of new songs. The above video features the band performing one of those new tracks, "Give Me Your Lips." Stay tuned for some new releases that the band have in the works. Thanks to Rob [...]
Our favorite Pakistani psychedelic cow-punks Sunny Ali & The Kid return with a new video for the latest single, "Two Girls." We bounced around Philadelphia with them last year, eating tacos, checking out a show at the Ox, and hanging out in their favorite Mexican cowboy shop. You can revisit our interview with them here .
This winter, Colorado's Bad Weather California went out on the road with pals Akron/Family, to promote their upcoming LP. BWC worked with Akron Fam's Seth Olinsky to record the album, and it turns out they will also have a major hand in putting it out by releasing on their own label. In the above clip, Bad Weather California (the "punk band that doesn't sound like one") is seen performing a couple of songs, "If You Can Dance" and "Don & I," during their set last month at Rock and Roll Hotel. These tunes also appear on their [...]
Back in the fall, Not Not Fun's dance offshoot label, 100% Silk , hit the road with acts Ital, Magic Touch, Octo Octa, Innergaze and LA Vampires. The tour touched down in DC at The Dunes, one of the more recent alternative spaces to pop up in the District in the last year. Check out the above clip from LA Vampires' set.
Experimental noise-rock band The Plums have had a pretty productive year, with residencies at Bella and Dynasty respectively, and the release of their White LP. An excellent record that you can buy directly from the band here . The above video features footage shot this week at the latest installment of their Dynasty residency, and cut to a track from the album. I handled the camera, but Marc Masters, a frequent video collaborator and bassist/keyboardist for the band put the clip together. Some photos from the show below:
The New Zealand fuzz-poppers kicked off 2011 with the release of their debut full-length album, Kudos , on Fire Records, and a brief American tour with psych-rock label mates Bardo Pond. And now, to round out the year, they've dropped a video to accompany the single, "Crazy Rulers of the World." The video debuted on Pitchfork a few weeks back and we've got the video for you here in case you missed it. We created this official video from footage shot during their D.C. show, so you've got a little bit of AON [...]

This past summer saw the release of the Rosebuds fifth album, Loud Planes Fly Low. Representing both a musical and a personal evolution, the formerly married core band members Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp worked at redefining their relationship as friends and bandmates leading up to and through the writing and recording of the record-a process that yielded an intimate and honest result. As Kelly put it in an interview with MKOB , "The vibe of the record is the honest truth about what was happening between us every step of the way. [...]
The U Street Corridor is known for the variety of bars and clubs lining this busy stretch of the city. And over the last decade, one of the most consistent forces behind the expansion of this neighborhood and some of its more interesting venues has been Eric Hilton. With restaraunts and bars like Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd, and American Ice Company under his belt, Hilton has shown no signs of slowing down his efforts at helping to reshape the neighborhood. One of the newest locations he's had a hand in, and probably the most understated, is Montserrat House . [...]
